Machining a tool steel point for a vintage 16 oz plumb bob was the first time here but it worked out in the end after a few stumbles. Here again a special size thread and I use an old trick or two to get it done and a very nice tool restored.
This Monarch 10ee has lead screw reverse that would make cutting this .195 " x 32 thread at higher speeds but I elected to use the threading dial at 500 rpms, about as fast as I can do it at that pitch. The results are very good but I use the lead screw reverse most always on the finer pitch threads to avoid the small errors from camming in the half nuts to get the 10ee fit. Leaving the half nuts engaged on the heavy gear head lathe for very fine pitch threads offers much more control.
I feed in the tool at 29.5 degrees, the last pass is often feed straight in around .002" to shave the right flank and produce a professional thread that is consistent and under control, I always make a chip with a deadly sharp tool, no Atlas bench lathe spring passes. Watch the crest of the thread, with some practice the eye can detect .002".
I will flame harden this part from 01 drill rod when I can get some more Acetylene.

@@deedeeindustrialsuperprecision we have a surplus store here that deals with NASA and the military...no helmets or guns or patches....electronics....well, they had a beautiful Nikon stereo microscope one day, I went back to work and came back 30 minutes later to buy....gone.....never wait on something, something other guy will get it....I have a few stereo cameras, and even took 2 Hasselblad motorized cameras [the model that landed on the moon without the mods they used] and did many 2 1/4 inch square stereo pairs.....and then had a system to project them on a screen and view with polarized glasses....it was amazing what you could see....

I am seeing machine prices all over the map, these machines still show up cheap and likely will continue as there is less interest. I made the point out of O1, I will hardened in with a torch later, thanks

hey Don, when you need to see up close, but no matter how many pairs of glasses you wear, I wear 3 at one time sometimes, try and take a cellphone picture and view enlarged .......helps when getting into deep dark holes on a machine too.......

I have a phone now that has the resolution, I forget about using it. The loupes I have are 50yr old Miltex Dental Loupes that are 2.5X and have a in focus range of 14 to 18" very bright and sharp, these are what the cheap copies are patterned after. These were not cheap but good modern ones are very expensive.

@@deedeeindustrialsuperprecision when doing 3D photography [Stereo] I priced some glasses like yours....way too expensive, I ended up buy loupes [Bausch and Lomb] and rigged them to spectacles......never worked too well......the focal length was way too short.....I was hoping when in my early 50's my arms would grow so I could see the menus in restaurants....instead, I just got a young wife.......have a wonderful evening my friend......enjoyed the making of the plumb bob needle.....

Love it :) Is that a watchmakers' lathe up there on one of those shelves? That would be awesome to take a quick look at that sometime.

Another great video as always I have the same plumb bob it has a small hole cross drilled across the point for a pin to tighten and remove the point. I also have the same mfg bob that has a spring loaded point they can from a transit. Are you going to harden it ? Hope you have a good thanksgiving ed

Thanks! I will drill a hole for a pin to remove it. I will harden it with the torch when I get some more acetylene. This is a better plumb bob then what I was using. You have a great Thanks Giving!
