Meet Brian Ray, President of the thermoforming company Ray Products. In this Brian discusses how thermoforming is a process that has both a vacuum forming and a pressure
forming side. He describes an example of using vacuum forming where a company
needs to have a high-gloss material surface for the finished surface. Brian also describes how thermoforming using vacuum forming works as a great low-cost alternative to the more expensive injection molding.
In thermoforming Ray Products also uses pre-colored plastic material in pressure forming that also permits textures in the tool surface and allows us to mold undercuts zero to negative draft. Pressure forming is also used for a lot of cosmetic applications and tight tolerance applications where the customers need material distribution tight tolerances, fit and it also eliminates painting.
Brian also describes how the thermoforming industry has evolved where at one time, a project had several medium-size plastic parts and how Ray Products combined them into one part. This consolidation of thermoformed parts provides many advantages to companies as they reduced or eliminated assembly costs, weight, and it improved the overall quality. Thermoforming companies like Ray Products have invested in six-axis robotic trimming that provides a technological advantage that delivers to industry-standard tolerances.
