Summer of 1981. I was 11 years old and my mom wouldn't let me watch it. So I told her I wanted to see another movie that was playing at the same time. She dropped me off for the mantinee. I paid for Superman 2 and walked into Heavy Metal. I was blown away and the only kid in my neighborhood who got to see it!!
My dad had a moment of badass and rented it. He asked me what was the worst movie I'd seen, I told him my first anime was Akira. So, we watched it together. I was 9.
Snuck into the movie theater to see this masterpiece! Needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed! The animation was sick! The soundtrack, was AWESOME! What a great movie!
There are some songs that aren't long enough, because they could never be too long. Some songs you could have playing all day, everyday, and never get tired of. This is that song.
Yes, there were technological limitations. It also depends on how long the musicians can play for. It kills me that the Beatles played "Helter Skelter" for 20 minutes and cut it down to just about three minutes for the album track. Nothing beats George screaming "I got blisters on my fingers!"
Agreed. It's the Hard steady Long Bass and Rhythm and a fond memory of when we were young and adventurous. Another - Versions of Fluke-Zion from the Matrix.
@@MultiManimal ive got a 99 buick century thats SLOW AF . but 6.25s in the lower door.... tweeters in the upper door....... 3 way 6x9s in the back deck and a 12 inch sub in the truck (with enough room left over for groceries..... because its a buick) . 65W RMS to each speaker 1000W rms to the sub (but gain is turned WAY down.... as sub can only do ~600W before it cooks... probably close to 350W) . . it sounds FUCKING AMAZING
Never forget rotoscope animation. Truly ahead of it’s time, and ultimately, sadly, shunned by the major film making community. You’ll never see another film like this, or the ‘78 Lord of the Rings. It’s all done digitally now, and while it looks nice enough, it loses all of its style in the computer.
When I was 18 my dad had a 77 corvette and I drove it while playing this song and Im pretty sure I was high once or twice and it was probably the most amazing experience Ive lived out as a human, just here to relive that.
I won four free tickets to it when it opened, I was the only one in the crowd that knew the origin of the movie. I'd been subscribing to Heavy Metal since it came out.
Dark Horse comics is coming out with a newly restored DEN book. Look it up if you have not heard about it yet. The man behind the restoration is Jose Villarrubia and he has been updated the fans with the progress.
@@jas31937I've got a copy of the original Den hardback signed by Corben. A legendary comic artist who left us so much amazing work, Rest in Peace Richard 😞
The B-17 sequence has such a memorable opening. The smooth rotoscope animation of the bomber, this music, the gunners pounding away on their ANM2 machine guns. It might be the shortest and least elaborate scene in the whole movie, but it has such impact. I want to be there. P.s. Probably no surprise, but I also love the attack on Eden scene from Heavy Metal 2000. When "Immortally Insane" kicked in for the first time, it made me a Pantera fan for life 🤘🤘
that b-17 animation was ahead of its time back in the day.... (before i was born.... but that dont mean i know good shit when i see it) . and ya.... as a ww2 nerd..... that was so fucking bad ass wish i could watch it for the first time again
This song sounds like The Eagles because Don Felder was in the band, and is still a great guitarist and songwriter. The digital recording style and instruments are a musical time capsule for 1980-81. The recording techniques and guitar sounds are right out of " Life in the Fast Lane " as well as other Eagle stuff from that era. It sounds like cocaine, expensive fast cars, bright lights, "overindulging", and girls. Then throw in the cartoon movie. It's brilliant and a great tune. I was blown away in the theater when it came out and as a young musician/guitarist and was sure it was The Eagles. " Takin' a Ride " kicks your butt as the term " Heavy Metal " was becoming a part of pop culture, art, music, and journalist themes. " Heavy Metal " magazine became a movie. The " Hair Head " bands followed and still do. The song list itself reflects the year. Now the term is a genre. Long live the movie " Heavy Metal ".
I remember watching this as a 13 year old in 1993. It was on TBS, when cable aired great movies. They had Heavy Metal on, followed by Vampire Hunter D. Blew my fucking mind. Anything by Ralph Bakshi is flawless. Wizards, Fire And Ice, The Lord Of The Rings, all are perfect.
I have 2 pages of movies I look up and I need to add Heavy Metal to them. When I am on Max, Pluto, Tubi, Paramount +, Hulu, .. folks, the more people who do searches like this, I think the odds increase that eventually they will add them and make them available. I am trying to get Exposure' (Peter Coyote ) , Beyond the Law (Charlie Sheen ) FreeFall (Eric Roberts ) and a ton of others added. Imdb is a good place to look things up.. also. In other posts here I just found out Timothy B. Schmidt and another did backup vocals to the song. I wonder as I did a quick glance and didn't verify, if Red Ryder has a song too on that album cover: Lunatic Fringe.
Drive it on up and let's cruise a while Leave your troubles far behind You can hedge your bet on a clean Corvette To get you there right on time Now if you're ready to dive into overdrive Baby, the green lights are on It's like you're running your brain on some high octane Every time she reaches fully blown Won't you take that ride on heavy metal? It's the only way that you can travel down that road Satisfied on heavy metal Baby won't you ride, ride it until it explodes Heavy metal My oh my, how this lady can fly Once she starts rollin' beneath you You know you just can't lose, the way she moves You wait for her to finally release you It's not a big surprise to feel your temperature rise You've got a touch of redline fever 'Cause there is just one cure that we know for sure You just become a heavy metal believer Won't you take that ride on heavy metal? It's the only way that you can travel down that road Satisfied on heavy metal Baby won't you ride, ride it until it explodes Heavy metal Heavy metal Heavy metal...
In fact, today's kids might know and yes, they have cell phones and PCs, today's kids can watch anything and know almost anything they want, just because it was amazing for you and our times doesn't mean it will be for you. they are amazing, this generation has much more entertainment than you guys hahaha.
Just rocked this on the air guitar for my son, while his mum made him play them air drums. He laughed so hard our hearts melted. His first giggle at 11 weeks old
killer tune, this is how I've discovered Don Felder, I was shocked to find out he was one of the members of the Eagles, if Henley and Frey were in the right frame of mind they would bring Felder back.
Apparently, Don (Felder) could be... very difficult to get along with. Lots of times they almost came to a fistfight on stage, was the way the word goes.
Its funny when you think about how ahead of its time this movie was. Adult cartoons are everywhere today, but that was an unheard of concept back then! Also I was (still am) a bit of a history buff and that b-17 sequence probably freaked me out more than the average kid haha...
sergeantbigmac Yea that was kind of a weird sequence, a B-17 bombing run plus flak exploding all around? I usually associate that imagery with the European theatre but in the Pacific. Trippy
jdfields711 Well bombing runs happened on both fronts. There was almost always a bombing by air before troops landed on an island in the PTO, not to mention the firebombing campaign of Tokyo that killed many more people than either of the A-bombs. But thats all beside the point because that sequence was trippy as fuck.
+PSIcoh Point?... Piracy ruined it, the internet ruins everything.. Many born in the mid 80's and up decided it would be awesome to download music around '93-'95 when the internet really got started, so the monetary value of promoting music videos went away as soon as the monetary value of albums went away.. The only way MTV could have made any continuous profits was by airing bullshit shows that only those with an IQ of under 90 would have the patience to watch.. Not only has your generation been helping out, mine was the middle man (born in '96) and those before me (Started the destruction and caused most of the damage) Not only do we have to go on youtube to watch music videos and have to rely on pandora to listen to any potential solid bands, like we were able to on MTV, we have to order solid albums online because nobody buys them anymore, we also pay a buttload of money to go to concerts because there are no albums to promote/purchase, you could go see bands like metallica and pantera etc for dirt cheap because they would go out and buy albums.. Now you'd be paying $50+ not including drinks and merchandise you'd like to purchase..
Who else is still rocking out to this and remembering the animated movie in 2016!! Yes you!! Fuck yeah!! Rock with me!! Loved that drawn Corvette in free-fall in the beginning of the movie!!
85 Studios actually that vette was a rotoscoped photo of the car...the movie did a lot of rotoscoped animations...part of why it looked the way it did...
Franklin Blankenship That is really cool, I am going to have to look that up because I don't really know what that is and have never heard of it, you taught me something new/ Thanks!
85 Studios it's a cool animation technique that basically drew lines over filmed footage, to make animation move realistically. ..the most recent and high profile use of it was in the movie A Scanner Darkly, which itself is an interesting film, but for other, very different reasons...
Hot damn forgot about this song. Damn it's freaking awesome. Screw coronavirus I am getting baked in my car all afternoon. That's what I call social distancing. 😯🥴😂🤘
i have seen the god damn movie 37 times and i still see new stuff every god damn time i see it but the the boeng b -17 bomber scene is just priceless, love it 👍
Man... I can just listen to this song over and over, crying and smiling, remembering what it was like when I was young, before all the pain. I took my ride on Heavy Metal, it's just over that's all.
This was back when you had to listen to the radio at night or see a band live or maybe see them on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert!!! There was no internet....phffffff.......you actually had to do some work to be a fan!!! Kids nowadays!!! LOL...awww I'm officially old.....:(.....where my Geritol????????
went to see this in ‘83 while in college with a girl I had met on campus a week or so earlier…went home with her and had an un-fekkin’-believable night/morning….great memories!
I would think that'd be Born to be Wild. I have a friend and he cracks his car up every time he plays Highway Star. It's kind of a running joke with him.
And that's our future... Some things are never gonna change. We'll just find quicker ways to judge and eliminate each other. And now back to the music... and the tits talk!
Where you live all natural death in he'll w/o the devil cuz when I find him there be no solitary confinement just torment pain eternal anguish now about the so called back pack thank you for lying not in a court of law but 2 witnesses in holidays inn hotel the Secretary & Dude in a suit & Tie for me in front of the Spokane entire police dept. Now about that not medal of honor but about the governor of great state of Washington giving David lee james Maslo a full pardon so I maybe able to get housing in a Country I did help build for Mexican wages
@@sumpum2672 I looked it up. I think it's the 80s way of saying "getting high". Either that or they just really like smiling to themselves when they listen to this song.
+Will S. Of course you're not. Everyone does. Likewise, everyone headbangs at the appropriate place in Bohemian Rhapsody. It's genetically determined at or before birth.
I 1st saw the movie with my gf in the 80s at the drive in and it was great and then 20 years later I saw it again and wow did I miss a lot of the movie!the sound track OFF THE HOOK!
Can you hear the term "heavy metal" years before it was anointed as such? It stands alone as one of the best "one hit" songs with one of the best "cult films" (best animated) ever made! Together they provided the perfect "snap shot" of the time it embodied, and what was to come. Felder nailed one of the best soundtrack songs ever.
Mine was tailgunner on the "Leap Year Lady". Flew 26 missions between 1942-43. Greatest compliment he gave Capt. Mort Fez was "He always brought us all back". No casualties for entire crew.
Bought the movie on VHS in the late 80s. Now I own it on DVD. Found it at Walmart for 6.00. I was to young to see in the theaters, I was 10 when it was released. All my older cousins would go see it all jacked up.
