Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guest is Zak Vargas from the now defunct band Elysia. Zak came on the podcast to talk the 18 year history of the bands debut album "Masochist" which is currently getting a remaster
eissue treatment on May the 10th.Zak took me through the entire history of the record track by track discussing each song as well as their timeline with demos and other songs. We discussed how the reissue came to be over the past few years and what led to it finally being released. We also discuss a lot of the lyrical themes and even breifly touch on "Lion of Judas" and the bands break up.
Masochist, is an album that needs little introduction within the global Deathcore scene, as it's become one of the most sought-after 2000s era collectibles. Original copies will cost you upwards of $500, if you can even find one to purchase! This deluxe edition CD features all-new artwork by Alexandre Goulet (All Out War, Ion Dissonance, Despised Icon); a fresh new remaster by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege; plus a 24-page booklet with lyrics, photos, flyers, and retrospective insights from vocalist Zak Vargas."Masochist" will be streaming everywhere on May the 10th and if you want a physical copy you can follow the link below and order it!

I've always thought that Lion of Judas came out just a few years too early and was ahead of its time when it came to that style of hardcore. If it had come out in like 2015 or later it would have been a hit.

I am a straight dude. But have been very pro LGBTQ+ since as young as I can remember. Partially due to being bullied and had alot of gay friends, I got called alot of slurs. And the "who's the fucking f***t now?" Lyric always hit me so hard. It's shameful how many people heard the word and completely misinterpreted the intent of it thinking Elysia didn't like gay people and all that. They were ahead of their time in alot of ways. That's not to say some of the lyrics did not age well and pretty "incel-energy". But most bands were at that time. But awesome he's addressed the lyrics and gave context and not a fan of alot of them.

Elysia is the best deathcore band. Also ABACABB and Forgetting Tomorrow are behind them.

Awesome podcast! This band was one of my absolute favorites back in highschool and it was super exciting to find out about the re-issue and the vinyl/merch and stuff. Grabbed myself a hoodie and somewhat regretting I never grabbed a vinyl. Thanks for this interview! I never heard Zak talk about the band before, and it was super insightful and he seems like he's happy with the legacy the band has left. Hoping for a reunion someday.

The fact that Zak mentions BTBAM twice just makes him so much cooler to me. So glad to hear from this dude and to have Masochist on streaming.

Impressed by his All Out War shirt. Their brother band End Of One was one of the earliest deathcore bands.
