A 95 meters long and overall 592 tons heavy formation transported a 260 tons heavy transformer from Leer to a distribution station near Conneforde, Germany. For this, the High Girder Bridge of the Kahl Heavy Haulage corporation was applied. The transformer came by a barge on the Ems river ( • Anlanden eines 260-Ton... ).
This is part 2 of a threepart series about the transformer transport from Leer to Conneforde:
◾️ Part 1: Unloading the transformer off the barge: • Anlanden eines 260-Ton...
◾️ Part 2: Departure of the 592 tons heavy Transformer Bridge
◾️ Part 3: Conversion of the Transformer Bridge: • Schwertransport: Umbau...

This was a pretty poor demonstration of skill. There shouldn't be more than one instance of needing to change the plan once in motion, if any at all. These guys had to change the plan several times in one town. The people that scouted this route are inept.

The major thoroughfares, like you see here, are not that narrow. Roughly the same size as similar streets in the USA. It's the small residential city streets that are narrow.

Some years ago I worked at the CPSES power plant in Texas. During the first year of operation, the unit #1 primary transformer blew up (1150Mw transformer - not a typo). Very spectacular. Took 6 weeks to get a new one made (not an off-the-shelf item) at about $4 Million. They shipped it by rail, but the last 12 miles it had to go over the road and they used a similar rig. They used a much bigger truck to pull the unit. Traveled at a whopping 2 MPH. Its hard to grasp how big this kind of rig is. The transport rig rental cost close to $750,000 alone (not part of the $4MM). Cause of the blow up? Moisture accumulated in the cooling oil inside the transformer allowing an arc to form which caused the big ka-boom. No one was hurt, but unit #1 down for ~ 8 weeks cost about $1MM per day in lost revenue.

You can't compare USA and Germany if you talking about transport of heavy and long things. In USA even small towns have a wide roads while in Europe most of the roads are narrow and additionally building is tight. Sometimes even regular TIR-es have problems with turning in lesser towns.

I used to be that guy lol. I used to maintain an entire fleet of hydraulic cranes and their 23.5" Alcoa rims. I believe it adds up to about 400 or so Alcoa forged-aluminum wheels that I had to polish and clean/assess the tires on. It's those inside tires on the duals that are a real pain in the ass, even if you're just taking down model and make for a check-list, let alone cleaning them to standard. On modern truck/crane frames, the drive axles are so close together that it's really hard (and kinda freaky feeling) to fit your head in there to see what's what.

Makes you think - when they design something this big do they consider where their plant is located and how they'll ship it out?
@AcidMettSpeck
@AcidMettSpeck 5 лет назад
Tom Kennedy ehh no. Mostly heavy load can be driven throw a canal via ship, but sometimes u have to travel hundreds of Kilometres via small and narrow roads. So u have to plan every step and this takes time. In Germany its only possible to drive in the night, otherwise it would kill the traffic. Our Country is a bit smaller than the US, and this also applied to our road infrastructure. Most of the time it isnt a problem for the driver and the team, but sometimes an error in the planing can cause million euros of damage.

Retired transport driver here, my hat is off to them. I have "backed" some 53 foot long trailers into some really tight loading docks that were designed B 4 53 footers were thought of. Playing yard Jockey at my plant I did have some drivers ask me to back their load in. I usually said to them "if I do that you will never learn", I would stand on their running board and show/tell them what to look for in their mirrors, when and which way to turn the steering wheel. 8 in 10 drivers could do what I told them. Others would take too long and I would just get in and do it or have them unhook and I'd use my yard truck.

Mods, bro.... Mods..... I seem to remember that American Truck Sim's heavy-haul pack was a bit of a shit-show. They didn't upgrade the trucks' engine/transmission options enough to be able to pull truly heavy loads (which is why literally the heaviest thing you can haul in vanilla ATS is just under 70 tons), especially through hilly areas like Arizona and Colorado, and the loads themselves are kinda generic. As for me, I use the Military Cargo Pack and various other heavy-haul mods with ETS2, and they get me through just fine, especially in addition to my engine/transmission mods. I can't remember the name of my favorite engine pack, but my favorite transmission pack is the OLSF dual-clutch mod, with them, the shifts are instantaneous, like on a race car. This is because on a Dual Clutch transmission, it's engaged in two gears at the same time, the one you're in, and the next one up, so when you go to shift up, it's already waiting for you in that gear, so there's no delay or wind-down, much like what you'd find in a Ferrarri or Porsche. This enables you to keep your RPMs up on hills much more easily, and since the change is instantaneous, it takes alot of the guess-work out of down-shifting while decelerating.

@adamplummer2190
@adamplummer2190 2 года назад
I was thinking in general they have to be using autos on the trucks to keep them sycned. Otherwise one trucks throttle being different then the other might spin out. Then hydrostatic for the trailers. With that many wheels diffs would take up too much room and you again need something that slips.
@dougaltolan3017
@dougaltolan3017 2 года назад
@@adamplummer2190 Nahh, you would be right if it was all 1 hydraulic circuit, but it isn't. Throttle is a revs request, not demand, result being throttle position translates better to power than speed.

Real heavy transport💪

So I gather the payload is just the centre loaded transformer, so would please enlighten me why the need for the huge long frame ? To distribute weight ? The cost would be huge, and weight of the frame more than the transformer.

Okay, Okay, I WON"T say a word ( though a bull hauler would have triple checked, maybe 4 time to look good ) But i am sure this driver learned

Monstrueux et beau à la fois ! L'intelligence humaine est vraiment capable de construire de grandes choses ! Pourvu que ces choses ne détruisent pas ce que nos Anciens ont eu tant de ma à construire !

Are you sure this is "just" a 260T load? An Abrams tank weighs 60T, and is transported with 8 axle (4 tyres each) trucks. Here are about 32 axles with 16 tyres each.

I hope they send you a bill to cover all the roadway damages.

They do. It's all a part of it. Months of planning, getting permits, and so forth. Here in the US they will sometimes even pave nee road if necessary. Millions of dollars of work.

Snoozeflu’s comment sounds like he thinks that a private person did this transport, and that the actual business behind it cannot afford 1000 euros for fixing that messed up bit of road 😂

Awesome video but what I dont get is why is that transformer so heavy and couldn't it have been transported in smaller pieces and assembled onsite? I dont know these things, just looking from a different perspective.

What an operation. I think diesel engines will be around for a long time to come.

I call BS on the ”it’s a historic area" comment. Watch some of the videos of replacing train bridges in England. They have their act together from removing signs to placing ground plates to minimize surface damage. Plus they use the same equipment.

You've got stones in Balbec,Lebanon that weigh 1200 tons supposedly carved with copper chisels and moved with horses or something. Yeah right.

Why they don't send it in pieces and mount in the location?, and why such a long trailer if the transformer is not as long, there's no "heavy dutty" normal lenght truck to move this thing? And if those operations are so expensive, it whould be crazy idea to attach 120 million helium balloons to make it wheightless?

At fist, I thought the truck was the Transformer.
