There are a lot of different brands, types, colors, and even sub types of acrylic paint. In this video I explore Liquitex paints and compare their heavy body vs. soft body paint to see how each performs and which I prefer.

Wow. I would have thought the heavy bodied would have looked better. But I'm fairly new to painting so I don't know a lot about paint that's why I watched this video. I definitely like the way the soft body strawberry came out better. It looks very rich and realistic.

Hold the small bottles of soft body acrylic closest to the top when removing the liner ... When you hold them in the bottle area, you squeeze just hard enough that they spurt some paint out, due to the pressure your fingers (inadvertently) cause. I how that helps, because when they spurt out like that, it is annoying.

I just saw heavy body acrylic paints in a local store today, I had no ideas about them before, so I searched on RU-vid and your video was exactly what I needed. Straight forward and informative. You channel has to be one of the most underrated RU-vid channels I've seen!! ❤️

I know this is a while ago, but try using mediums (like slow dri) instead of water when painting! It makes them look amazing without compromising the paint quality! :)
@appleknocker56
@appleknocker56 9 месяцев назад
Yes! If add to much water actually starts breaking the acrylic bonds, changes color but use other slow dri medium helps! Never tried adding a tad of a watercolor to my acrylic to make “moon” bit darker. On acrylic whites thought all were opaque but not true! Liquatex (artist brand) are good acrylics. Ty for this video. In acrylics Arteza has a set (harder body) but very pigmented. Ty for showing how different types can act so differently!

Hello! I'm a new sub. I love your tutorials (I found you via your paper quilling tutorial, which was thorough enough to get someone confidently underway with a new medium), and wanted to drop some constructive criticism for you to maybe make a follow up video to this one. If I understand Liquitex's promo materials properly, their heavy body acrylics can be used directly out of the tube, but where they really shine in terms of versatility is how they mix with the lineup of mediums Liquitex has at the ready. With the addition of mediums, you can change the texture (rough, sand, crackle, tar) or thin down the heavy body to a soft body- all without losing pigmentation. The soft body acrylics (mnnn, I also have a love affair, especially with their cute little squeezy bottle and that nozzle) are amazing, as you have presented... but they lack some of the versatility of the heavy bodys (bodies? Lol). Golden sells an awesome acrylic medium sampler pack that you can find at most Michael's or Hobby Lobby with a coupon that would be a great way to get your next video started, hint hint. 😉 Two other quick tips- carefully slicing a slit in the top of the soft body seal before opening/peeling it off relieves the pressure inside and prevents the loss of paint/explosion of paint. Also, tempting as it is to give the bottle a squeeze to get your paint out, don't. Again, as you presented, a tiny bit goes a long way, so unless you're working on a large piece or using a retarder I suggest just dabbing the soft body out of the bottle. You can always dab out a little more if needed, but you can't suck the precious paint back into the bottle :). Again, your videos are very professional- well edited, full of useful information, and presented in a way that the viewer can easily follow. Keep 'em coming! 😊

Thanks so much for the feedback! Your tip on poking a hole before taking the seals off is genius, I wish I would have thought of that! I agree with some of your heavy body thoughts that they'd be great with some of the mediums. When I first started painting I liked thicker paints and mediums, but over the last year my style and preference has definitely changed to prefer more liquid paints. I am sure I'll make my way back to them soon. I think ultimately it comes down to what works for you! I will definitely keep your feedback in mind and maybe do a follow up where I give them more of a fair shot. What is your favorite thing to paint?

Loved your demo the strawberry looked good enough to eat lol , I went to a product review years ago now and they didn’t recommend using water with acrylic paint it breaks down the pigment replace it with other mediums instead another tip dip your brush in retarder medium and that will give you more time to blend as well especially if you are working on a larger piece . . Thanks again for the demo you did a great job .

Hi Rebel, congratulations on your channel!! Would you say you prefer Soft Body to traditional Heavy Body? I'm just starting out painting with Liquitex Basics acrylics and i quickly liked it and want to upgrade soon. The thing is, I don't have access where I live to artist stores to try them out and probably will have to order online from another country. So seeing a lot of youtube videos and reading the comments are my best bet to get it right the first time. I don't care for impasto or thick work, but I don't want the painting to be a big flat piece neither. So, in that case, soft body's might be best, right? It also seems much easier to blend colors on the palette with the soft body (which is a plus for me, because I intend to have a limited palette).Thanks for video.

I personally like the soft body ones. But that being said, you won't get any texture out of them. One thing to consider is if you use the heavy body, you can use some of their mediums to thin them and change their consistency. So you might have more range with them. It really depends how you like to work. I like to do a bunch of layers of thin wet paint.

Gotta say, I've never liked the feel of acrylic. I prefer watercolor and gouache. But the soft body paints have me curious! I hope I can find a few colors to try without breaking the bank!

hello, so would it be better to do a base with teh heavy body and then use the soft body paint to do intricate flat solid color motif drawing on the heavy body? or use teh heavy on teh heavy. I just dont want the base to show through the designs. Thanks in advance for your advise

So would soft body cover more evenly? I DO NOT want brushstrokes is this what I need?
@RebelUnicornCrafts

Hi! Soft body will have significantly less brush strokes. You might also want to consider a fluid acrylic like golden fluid acrylics if you're looking for no texture.

Which dried to be more matte in your opinion?

Probably the heavy body since that white mattified more than the white from the soft body, but not by a huge margin overall

I am still loving the soft body paints. I have been experimenting with thinning the heavy body and I agree, it is really nice. I might have to do another video testing the heavy body with mediums.

I think I need to retest the heavy body paints with some mediums. I actually use them often in my own painting practice. If you have suggestions on how you'd find it helpful to see them reviewed I'm always looking for ways to improve!

Loved the demos, but wished you would’ve painted the strawberry the same way, you added white twice and painted the white over the white on the seeds on the heavy body strawberry so it wasn’t going to look as good with all the overworking on the heavy body art.

But liquitex heavy body cant be used with water only with medium!
@RebelUnicornCrafts
@RebelUnicornCrafts 4 года назад
It's definitely better to use them with mediums, but I have found that there are no real set rules when working with art supplies! I do think in the future I will do a follow up video where I give them a better shot at competing by using mediums!

@@RebelUnicornCrafts This "rule" was told by the developers in their description or in their videos :) That would be awesome thanks! Heavy body paint is for professional artist so for people who paint professionally it’s a way better paint. The soft body ones are easier because it’s for basic painting.
@serenityjewel

Nope. It depends on how the artist paints, not on their profess9. Both are professional art supplies.
