I was dealing poker in Atlantic city back in the 90's and the man sitting next to me spoke. I recognized his voice immediately and said to myself that's Emmanuel Steward. Then I noticed his cuff links and they said the initials "E.S." before I had a chance to turn my head and look at him. I told him what an honor it was to meet him and he couldn't have been nicer. A real gentleman. R.I.P. Sir.

It truly is. I love how Steward at the end humbly, but in a very matter of fact way tells Rummy in so many words, "I just blessed you with some precious jewels. Only Bert Sugar can hit you with this level shit, but even then, I was in the corner with a lot of these warriors. A true legend and they are both sorely missed.

It's an unusual thing about the heavyweight division. Even though it's an odd thing to do when discussing guys who fight in the same division, you kind of have to temper heavyweight evaluations with a sort of pound-for-pound perspective. To take it to today's scene, Oleksandr Usyk may in a sense be 'better' than some top heavyweights but not able to beat them in heavyweight fights. Or if you're for example a young Evander Holyfield, you could have ruled the cruiserweight division for ages, but 1% as many people would have known your name. So you take the step up to the marquee division -- but in doing so, you do take on disadvantages. Guys, on the other hand, who have a lot of skill and ability yet are naturally the size of a 'super heavyweight' will just always have significant advantages over you that do not entirely come from that skill and ability.

Ali was at his best against Cleveland Williams. He had one more fight before his exile against Zora Folley where Ali was not quite as masterful, but still dominant. The only thing we did not know about the pre-exiled Ali was how good his chin was (we would learn that in the 1970s). Knowing that it is hard to imagine any heavyweight from history beating him.

He can say that. His pupil beat totally washed up tyson. He hasn't said that. He never said his pupil was so lucky. This great man doesn't consider holmes, Tucker, mitchgreen, Smith, bruno, tillis, etc as real big good man. 😂😂😂. Why He was shouting back in 2002 , jump on him jump on him.. He is a dead man. This great man knew that still that dead man could turn the tables anytime if connects enough. Shame

Yep. Great, 5'10" guys like Marciano and Tyson can't compete with great 6'4"+ guys like Lennox Lewis, Foreman, et al.

@@terrybader8595 Depends on the style. Foreman style would of gave Tyson way more problems than Lennox Lewis would have.

Absolutely fantastic interview. You asked excellent questions and the answers Emmanuel gave were insightful and full of knowledge. In my opinion one of the best trainers ever in the sport along with Eddie futch, Angelo Dundee, jack Blackburn and cus d'amato. Rip Emmanuel steward.

I grew up watching HBO boxing with my Dad, a lot of great memories. Besides my Dad, a voice of reason and simple observation of the sweet science, was provided by Emmanuel Steward, he was so wise. Of course as well as Jim Lampley. Both easily the greatest, commanding commentators in tone and voice inflection. Sincere cats and always dressed to the nines. As a kid those days seeing Las Vegas, the fights, the show..it always drove me to get ringside seats. ☝🏻 It just broke my heart when I heard he die, I wondered how Jim Lampley must of felt..after losing his long time buddy/mentor/ boxing enthusiast and co worker. God bless everyone, fight the good fight and thanks for reading. Thank you for posting this video. ✊🏻💯

NEXT VIDEO IDEA: Brilliant work Rummy, I must have watched this 5 times over already in isolation, looking at the views already I am sure I am not alone, I know there must have been a lot of hard work involved and much appreciated. Each time I watched this, I learnt something new, one of the biggest things that shone through was how much Emanuel thought one of the key things that made a fighter great was a fighter who could RE-INVENT themselves. Ali who beat Frazier 3 was a totally different fighter from Cassius Clay who beat Sonny Liston, George Foreman V1 was a totally different fighter from George Foreman V2. Tyson Fury who drew with Wilder, had to re-invent himself to KO Wilder in the second fight, even Joshua had to re-invent himself to beat Ruiz in their second fight. I am probably a little biased being from the UK but Joe Calzaghi who beat Hopkins and Jones (who both probably deserve their own mention) was a totally different fighter from the raw kid who beat Nigel Benn. The GOLD standard Manny is probably on version 12 of himself. And then there are the fighters who could not re-invent themselves, maybe Tyson falls into that category, certainly Sonny Liston, maybe in the modern era yet to be determined Wilder, I am sure you know better than me the other examples. So after you have had a rest RUMMY, maybe you could follow up on Emanuel's notion of greatness, who were the great RE_INVENTORS that made themselves great. Anyway thanks again Rummy, you me and many others may be the reason why bookmakers are rich, but you are proving yourself as a GREAT BOXING HISTORIAN.....even though you allege you don't know shit about boxing.
