Hecla - Lion Mountain from the Air - A Montana ghost town near the ghost town of Glendale, Montana MT.
** These scenes were captured in 2018. As of 2023: This area is now private and inaccessible, all behind locked gates **
Lion City and Hecla Mines are located 9,000 feet above sea level. The road was a bit rough in some places and excellent in others. A high-clearance vehicle or an ATV is recommended. No cars, motorhomes, or tow trailers should attempt this road.
The Hecla Mines on Lion Mountain are amazing. You can see adits (openings to horizontal mines) to 20 miles of underground tunnels. Miners had to climb stairs to enter these openings in order to go to work extracting ore that contained silver, lead, and copper. The ore was transported to the stamp mill four miles away by overhead cable cars and then transported to Glendale for smelting.
All the trees you see have grown since the 1890s when all timber was stripped from the hills to feed the smelters' blast furnaces.
Silver mining came to a virtual standstill with the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893. Sporadic mining occurred until 1922.

In 1881, the Hecla Mining Company reorganized their mining efforts in the area founding the town of Helca a short distance above Lion City. The primary reason for the new town was to remove the miners from the saloons and brothels available in Lion City along with providing easier access to the mines. The town grew to an estimated 1,500 to 1,800 individuals and included boarding houses for the miners, waterworks, fire protection, a church, a school for 200 students, company offices, and other businesses typical of a small mining town.
These scenes were captured with a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced drone in September 2018. Editing was accomplished with Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio.

i believe this was always private, but was unmarked and unmaintained. These mining claims were patented long ago. Patenting is the process of converting a claim into private property. Theyve been private for close to 100 years or maybe a few decades longer than that, some time in the 1880s-1930s era i believe.

Patenting mining claims was ceased by the Clinton administration. In theory legally it could still be done, the law is still on the books permitting it, but the office that was in charge of it was closed down during that administration and never reopened.

Alex, thanks for the great information. My digital maps show all the mining claims in Montana, and I am finding more and more of them have been closed off to the public. Unfortunately for us, people are pulling campers and building cabins on the claims that I explored and photographed, leaving no trace. A part of our history that isn't being preserved for future generations.

@@davidegg22 yep. ive seen that happen too. It doesnt help also that the forest service and BLM keep closing down more and more roads and making all these wilderness study areas.

The cabin just needs a little TLC.

I was up there this summer and was stopped by a locked gate to the area. Drone footage recorded that this cabin now is just a blank spot in the dirt. It may have collapsed during the winter or was torn down by the new owners. Close by is a home being built and the mountain road that we used to travel onto the face of Lion Mountain had no trespassing signs all around. I am glad I was there to record this piece of history before it was closed to the public.
