Hector 'Macho' Camacho vs Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini (Highlights)

This was Mancini's first fight in four years.
Both boxers made over $1.2 million.
There was a sellout crowd of 11,517.
The fight was televised live on closed circuit and pay-per-view television.
Sports Illustrated reported: "Camacho was the 3-to-1 favorite, though hardly with the crowd. The fans hooted him from the moment he stepped into the ring. Camacho answered by dancing in circles, dressed in a red matador hat with earlike protuberances, gold-sequined trunks, overskirt and shoes. He looked like a cross between Midas and Mickey Mouse. Mancini chased him from the start, pressuring him. Camacho peppered away with his right jab, consistently the most effective punch thrown by either man all night. But to the crowd's displeasure, Camacho also ran, backpedaling and sidestepping the pressure. Mancini made what there was of the fight, with hard overhand rights and body shots, but he lacked precision in his punches and never did real damage. Tiring in the later rounds, Camacho stopped running and started tying Mancini up, and that turned what had been a boring fight into an unsightly one. When it was over, each man went to his corner thinking he had won."

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

Boxing was so much fun in the 80s. I remember saving up to get a Ring magazine to read about these two , and Hagler and Hearns , Leonard , Pryor etc. Good fights were on tv a lot in those days. On Saturday mornings Id look forward to watching Looney Tunes , This Week in Baseball and Wide World of Sports . It was a good time to be a kid

There was at least an objective in pro boxing back then. There were only 2 world champions, and a ton of talent. Now there are many "world champions" and the objective is to win one and play it safe, where that wasn't really possible before because of the talent level. Also, now there's multiple champions even within 1 alphabet soup organization. All I can say is that those so-called "champions" who hide behind some paper title and refuse to fight anyone are total cowards and a disgrace to anyone who ever laced on boxing gloves.

Didn't Mancini kill a Korean boxer in the Ring because the referee wouldn't stop the fight?? Fucked Mancini's head up - stopped boxing - this was his first fight in four years? Unless you are "blind", you just watched "overated" Mancini kick Machos ass.....Macho knew it too.

I once met Mr. Mancini during his early retirement and had a great one on one conversation. I told him how much I had wanted to see him him fight knock out macho Camacho. He said, “Me too”! They had never fought when I met him. The meeting was on an outdoor movie set at Indian Dunes, CA where he was in a Steven Spielberg episode of Amazing Stories. Ray played a WWI soldier and was in a uniform waiting between scenes. I was a Paramedic on standby in case there was any medical assistance needed. I spotted Ray standing by himself so I walked over to him and said, “Excuse me but are you Ray Mancini”? He said, “Yes”. I said, “How are you doin’ Champ”? It was a great honor meeting him. We are about the same age.

Even though Camacho was fighting 2 weight classes above his peak, his footwork, the art of walking the ring, was second to none. He also had one of the greatest chins of all time and blinding speed. Just ZERO power. . Mancini was non stop action for 3 minutes of every round. He pressed and mauled the hell out of you until you dropped. Cold blooded in the ring. This was a fight millions were waiting for. It was the perfect match up of boxer vs slugger, which might be the best matchups in boxing. My father and I were the only ones rooting for Camacho while the entire fight party was all on for Mancini.

Mancini gave a good effort, but he was really never the same after unintentionally killing Kim Duk-Koo in 1982. Before that happened he was an unbeatable human buzz-saw who would typically overwhelm his opponent with unrelenting flurys of hard punches. After that tragic fight, though, he just wasn't the same- you could tell he'd turned it down a notch as though he was afraid of killing, or seriously hurting another opponent. It's the old paradox of being a guy who loves people, but is in the business of hurting them.

What a great fight! Very close, Camacho took the early rounds with sharp counters while slipping out of the way, but the pressure wore him down and Mancini started catching him hard in the later rounds. Don't disagree with the decision, Mancini took a lot of shots on the way in. If he'd slowed down just a tad and been more defensively responsible he might have won this.

@@kolaiahisrael950 I agree Hector won. But whooped his ass the whole fight? No. I watched this live in 89. Hector did run alot but landed meaningful punches as well. Ray fought WAAAY better than anyone thought he would. 4 years out without a tuneup. Hector took him lightly and was gassed and breathing hard several times. All this being said if the fight happens in 85 like it should have, I think Hector wins easily. Maybe on cuts late. But I think this Camacho was already compromised by drug use. He would go undefeated another 2 years until Haugen beat him. This version is nothing like the phenom of 82-85. RIP

Ray was never quite the same after the bout with Kim. Back then, no judges would judge against Camacho. I watched him get beat a few times, but neither the judges or the public saw any of it. Ray should have known, that unless he scores a KO, there's no chance of getting a decision against Camacho. Well, up until Greg Haugen. For some strange reason, the judges finally saw someone beat Camacho. I was shocked that they actually saw it.
