On this episode of “Stocks in Translation,” Hugh Hendry spoke with Yahoo Finance anchor Jared Blikre and producer Sydnee Fried about his storied career path from an aspiring accountant to a hedge fund manager and now a self-proclaimed "acid capitalist." He shares pivotal moments that shaped his contrarian views and explains how embracing his outsider status led to both professional success and personal fulfillment.

Hendry's comment about gold being overvalued is true if its valued in relation to the combined value of spendable currency in the USA i.e. M1 and M2 which adds to roughly 37 trillion. However if gold is valued relative to the world's total spendable money (approximately 90 trillion) then gold is undervalued. I propose this check on golds value because when the analysts do the calculation using the 20% figure (as used by Hendry) they calculate their result using total above ground gold reserves which, as we all know, a fair bit of it resides outside of the USA. Therefore if we are calculating using total above ground reserves (again n.b. worldwide) then logic would suggest we use the approximate figure of 90 trillion of worldwide spendable currency. Therefore at 6.44 billion above ground ounces (worldwide) at $2,400 delivers a value of 15.5 trillion which gives a ratio of 17% suggesting a gold is actually undervalued by 3%. All figures come from copilot query.

Managers need to compound money period. Any folks with weird thesis is fine, as long they are making money for clients. Paying 2/20 for single digit returns is a no go. I do however think tail option is interesting, but consider it insurance and thus a zero...
