It's cool seeing how the one hedgehog uses his spike side to shield the other from getting at his face or underside, even when they tried to go the other way he was able to quickly turn like he knew what the other was trying to do 🦔
Shadow: I’ll show you who is the faker hedgehog Sonic: I’ll make you eat those words Shadow: Eat my quils Silver: Will you guys knock it off we’re gettin off track here Sonic and Shadow: Shut up Silver!!
We had a couple of hedgehogs in the backyard a few nights ago, I didn't see them as I was trying to sleep, but I could hear them, they sounded a lot like cats scuffling. My parents' bedroom window has a clear view of the backyard and from what I was told, they were both the size of a Nintendo Switch case and were forcing each other into our metal garden gate.
It's amazing to see this behaviour. Great footage. It shows what a lot of modern martial arts have replicated. The "side potato" is devastatingly broad defense technique. When attacked, you lie on your side at a 45 degree angle. This protects your vital organs and weak chest/abdomen while utilizing your spiked quill filled back as shield. Brilliant!
The female is usually testing the strength and persistence of the male which can go on for hours and hours and can be quite noisy, when they hiss it’s them telling either a human other hogs or other animals to clear off…..fascinating to watch … have several in back yard that come every night, could sit and watch them for hours …. Watched it attack a cat one night who was trying to steal the hedgehogs food source….the cat backed off and ran away 😂 very brave little buddies 😆
Yeah one of them managed to dig their teeth in the other, normally they just push eachother over or back. I guess it's because there's a lot of hogs and so little food, or one of the ones just watching was a female. Just my much smaller domestic pygmy hedgehog's bites can do a lot of damage when she's pissed, I can imagine how much more a larger wild one's bite would hurt, damn.
This video was near the start of their hibernation period where they do sometimes come out during the day to forage if they haven't put on enough weight to hibernate.
