Hedung Dance. Lamahalajaya. Adonara, NTT, Indonesia
Adonara is the first of the islands in the Alor Archipelago which stretches from the east of Flores (Larantuka). These islands lie between the Pacific and the Indian oceans and the waters between the islands can often contain raging currents as the tide runs between these two mighty oceans. The waters are clear and the islands are volcanic.

This dance is nowadays only performed for entertainment but in earlier times it was a symbol of past battles and a preparation for coming battles. This was especially so under Colonial rule during which first the Portuguese and then the Dutch controlled the area. (The colonial period lasted more than 300 years). This is a war dance.
The accompanying instruments include a drum with an untanned skin called gendering, two large gongs Gong Ina which both had the boss missing (fairly common in NTT) Four small gongs Gasa two hanging gongs and Temedo, 2 gongs on the ground. A similar instrumentation is used in this area for Tarian Lilin. The group repeats a simple pattern.
