Fern didn’t hesitate to kill clone frieren cuz it was frieren she was just of guard cuz nobody thinks someone without arms and wand could do anything so she got defeated
And probably even on that state of the clone, Fern will run out of mana and that thing is still standing. And without Frieren's final blow, Fern would be a splat on the wall lol
@@bacsrm6897 nah I don't think fern would run out of mana. she even says "I should finish it off". she just stopped attacking because she thought the clone was done for, that was her mistake.
Nah you guys are wrong, its because the spell that clone frieren use is imperceptible, when mage battle they use mana detection to defend and percieve the spell against them, but what clone frieren use is undetectible and unblockable, just like curses and goddess magic, many ancient magic have the same complexity breaking logic as the same as the spell serie use in future arc, thats why fern said she cannot recognize it as spell and its the height of magic bc of that feat
You misunderstood what Wirbel and Methode said about Ubel and Sense's fight. Methode expressed surprise that Ubel beat Sense and Wirbel said it wasn't surprising because it was a bad match up, meaning Sense was uniquely weak against Ubel's speciality spell. He knows because he fought her. They weren't saying that Ubel was a bad choice for defeating Sense, but the opposite.
23:00 The escape golems are created by 1st. class mage Lernen; he and 2nd. class mage Edel knows each other well. She marvels at the golem's abilities and its capability to use healing magic. She seems to be admiring Lernen's handiwork.
If anyone wonders remember in the first test the birds went to sense without being scared it was cuz she could conciel her mana and thats why lawine and old man couldnt sense sense
Both her and the test's proctor Genau were having tea with a couple of Stille hanging around their campsite, so both of them can control their mana enough that they didn't scare the Stille off. Sense was even able to teleport into the campsite without scaring the Stille off.
no it was necessary for them to stop sense because ALL of the replicas were heading towards the bottom and wouldve made everyone fail because they wouodnt be able to handle them all while frieren and fern fought
yeah frieren herself says that if sense's replica sneaked them from behind she wouldnt be able to protect fern and in worst case scenario, they both might die
That final attack from Clone Frieren is terrifying. It's been established that normal magic is the translation of thought. But this attack was PURE thought, without going through mana. So it's instant, undetectable, and irresistible. As Fern said "the height of magic". Frieren said she hasn't used it in 80 years, which means that's probably the attack that she used to kill the Demon King. Fern was luck to survive.
I doubt this was what KILLED the demon king, as fern who's not even sturdy was able to walk out of it with no major injuries. I think this was the move who restrained the demon king and allowed the hero party (most likely himmel) to deal the final blow. Also any conversation on what the "height of magic" move actually was in pure speculation at this point, since not even in the manga we get an explanation to what exactly happened there...
I love how each name perfectly represents who they are in german. Denken - thinking Übel - bad / sinister Fern - distant / far away (can also mean distant on an emotional level) Himmel - heaven (i truly believe he is frierens heaven) Sense - scythe (bc of the hair i guess) Frieren - feel cold, to be cold (i also think this works perfectly even tho thanks to himmel i dont think her name represents her that well anymore; but this is what the story is all about so definitely a good thing) Sein- to be (someone who lives in the present and takes life day by day really fits his persona struggling with letting the past go) The list goes on and on but it fits with each and everyone… also the demons have fitting names
There is a German RU-vidr, Storieswithstyle, who has a lovely video going into the names (people, places, spells) used in the anime up to episode 16. It is very much worth watching, and each name is timestamped.
Just to clarify. Wirbel was stating that it wasn't surprising that Ubel killed the Sense replica, because Ubel is an extremely bad matchup for Sense (as we saw earlier).
There is an omake where Mimic-kun use Lugner line. "The mage who was caught by the most mimics in all of history, and also consigned the most mimics to their grave as well .. Frieren the Slayer. The kind of prodigy I despise."
I see this happening alot, where the viewers aren't letting the show unfold and are trying to predict or explain it while its happening. What value is there to the show if you don't let yourself just enjoy it? So far the writing has been amazing at giving you all the info you need to understand the fights or characters.
I find it funny that people keep missing that the replicas are software. The question wasn't whether the Spiegel could recreate them, it was why it didn't immediately make multiple copies.
And we can conclude that the Spiegel still takes some time to produce ubel clone despite some time past... So the time taken for the Spiegel to produce will increase with the person's strength/mana, hence why frieren clone doesn't come out right away... Imagine trying to copy 1000 year worth of mana and trying to upkeep it....
I never considered that the word attrition might be unknown to people but actually I might be the weird one. (A few weeks ago I was also shocked to learn that some people don’t know the word “mage”, two out of a group of four)
I also don't think Fern may ever kill Frieren, but I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't sink a bit the very moment Serie said a human mage might kill Frieren some day.
Earlier Denken says that no mage can hide their mana while casting a spell. Fern couldn't detect any mana from clone Frieren in that moment which is why it's the Height of Magic.
If magic is a visual medium, you have to be able to imagine it to make it so, then that means insanity can alter how magic works. Ubel is just insane, hence sense saying her mind doesn't function like a person's or, at the very least, a sane person's. It's a very interesting take on a magic system.
Visualization here does not involve about anything seeing something or not. It's all about imagination or what can be visualized in the mind. For example, Ubel already saw previous attempts by other mages to break through the cloak's defensive magic. They failed because the image in their mind is about trying to break through the defensive magic. Ubel on the other hand imagined herself cutting through the cloak itself because in her mind, a piece of cloth is something to be cut and can be cut very easily. It is what anyone with a cutting tool be it a pair of scissors or magic will expect to do to a piece of cloth. She applied the same thing with Sense's (pronounced 'zen-ze') hair.
They have to fight the Sense clone because if they don't stop or slow it down, it will reach the lowest level before Frieren and Fern are likely to be finished fighting the Frieren Clone, and as Frieren said, if they let the Sense clone get behind them before they can finish off the Frieren Clone, they'll likely fail and possibly all die.
I actually empathize with Ubel quite a bit. It seems like she feels people who are arrogant, greedy, or are otherwise unable to be empathized with are already dead and worthless to her, so killing them feels like nothing more than swatting a mosquito that bites her - morally speaking. After 25 years working in customer service, I have a similar mindset.
About "attrition," subtitlers really have to use the fewest words possible for a subtitle to get it displayed and read in about the same time it takes to say it. They are also on extremely strict schedules to get the subtitles done at about the same time the anime airs on Japanese TV. So no space for roundabout explanations and no time before deadline to fine tune the wording either. It's a compromise, and we either have to live with simul-cast's sometimes using words we didn't know were a part of English, or we have to learn Japanese. Probably asking Siri is quicker than learning Japanese. Edit: Note that this isn't a hater comment. Just an explanation of why the people who make subtitles might use words you aren't familiar with.
To Fern and Frieren, being underestimated is a huge compliment. Both use deceptively simple and basic magic to lull their enemies into a false sense of security and obscure their true mana strength to lure in demons. Being underestimated is actually what they want.
Attrition is a pretty important word in the English Language. English speakers are pretty jangoistic and avoiding attritional combat is a primary goal of American and Commonwealth militaries.
I think you misunderstood what Wirbel was saying. He meant it in the same was Sense was calling Ubel a bad matchup, in that he also understood that Sense would have no chance vs Ubel.
I would be very interested in the grow cycle and migration habits of mimics... are they monogenous? Do the younglings look like jewel cases? Anyway... PEAK... again. Lol @ attrition - just because my wife had the same reaction and I did not understand what's so spezial - but hey, years of reading english fantasy sci-fi & military stories pays off 😄
Sense saying "this doesn't even count as adversity" is probably because she knew all along that Ubel could easily beat her Clone. It's another aspect of her setting up the test to require the examinees to work together to pass, where every challenge no matter how apparently daunting has a findable solution for the examinees, if only they talk to each other, are honest about their strengths and weaknesses, and trust one another.
I gotta say... this episode you are definitely projecting things into scenes and the meta that are just not right for example after Fern blew up clone Frierens arms and her thought is interrupted by clone Frierens death stare
Funny little detail. The spell Frieren casts when she "makes an opening" by pretending to make a defensive mistake to entice the Clone to attack her so it exposes itself even more is a wind tornado spell just like the one Denken used against her when they fought. Which Sense and the other Proctor called "overdoing it" due to how spectacular and overpowered it seemed at the time. But in a battle between mages of Frieren's caliber, such a spell if attempted without subterfuge counts as a big blunder.
I think what Wirbel meant with Übel being a bad matchup for Sense, was because he knows how her mind works and he knew that she could destroy Sense. He figured it out how dangerous she is
I also would like to point out that some people also get angry at Fern for the way she reacts but keep in mind that she had to grow up very quickly as heiter took her in basically in it's late 80's so she is allowed to act spoiled because she never had a childhood
"Pinnacle of Magic" the term used in the manga means its not just the height it is the highest point. Pure magic no staff no casting just visualization. Fern didn't hesitate she was caught with an attack she cant detect.
A bit of dramatic irony in that just as Frieren says she underestimates Fern, Fern underestimated Frieren there. She had no idea at all that Frieren was capable of something like that.
Since fern didn’t sense that the frieren clone’s eye attack was magic, my guess would be that it’s just pure lifeforce energy from frieren, kind of like some weird version of haki if anyone here is familiar with one piece
The fact there's 2 other mimics next to Frieren at the end just is hilarious. Easily her achilles lol. "Battle of attrition" is more of a military term which implies, constant bombardment to weaken their forces rather than targeting one single place. (Basically to see who can withstand the longest) If you remember in episode 9 where Fern was fighting Lugner, he said it would be a battle of attrition because she was rapid firing attacks at him and he was blocking them with his blood, he thought she'd run out of mana. Also 80 yrs ago Frieren seems scary but being blasted away like that by NOW Frieren is scarier. Also Ubel is proving why she's one of my favorites :D I am glad I am not alone on this lol.
I believe it is foreshadowing Spoilers With the current arc and the assassins, And the weakening of the demons, I believe it's only a matter of time before humans come into conflict with the remaining elves
I'm just joking but the comment about words native english speakers don't know got me like "excuse me speak for yourself". "Attrition" is a banal word. I will surreptitiously ameliorate my indignation by indulging in the plethora of reactions to this episode. 😂
That's why Ubel is my GOAT😂. I remember thinking if they would show us her fight against Sense's clone in here, bc in the manga they didn't, and i know why: it wasn't even a fight, it was a completely annihilation. And her backstory too, really cool. PS: i know 99% of the people don't like Richter, but ngl....i kinda see him and Lawine getting along (in a friend / colleague way). She's not the most gentle person either. In fact, they both pretty rude actually😂
is sense not sensei Your pronunciation is really weird. In Frieren, most of the characters' names are named after German. For example, Himmel means heaven when translated into German.Although these are off topic, the main thing I want to say is that your pronunciation is weird
@farohreacts What I mean is pronunciation. When you pronounce sense, you use the English pronunciation. That's what I find weird. and 20:53 I think you didn’t see clearly what was going on. You were immersed in your excessive delusions and strange emotions that you were afraid that the character might be injured and died, which led to you not watching the anime seriously .
@@farohreacts just if you´re interested, the german word "Sense" is pronounced Sen - seh, with 2 syllables, and means "scythe" in english. And don´t mind this other rude fella 🙂
@@user-qi1jf5jt3q She is speaking English, hence her pronunciation being English sounding. She does not speak German (and neither do you lol). She is allowed to pronounce the name however she wants. Grow up.
Ubel has that delusional confidence and she doesn’t understand magic, which allows her to achieve these feats, but otherwise she seems like a terrible mage, she has shown two spells, which she ONLY learned by empathising with a person and any regular defense magic or just like armor plates block her one attack move perfectly.
