I like how we get a sense of how strong some of the examinees are here without even seeing them fight. The low angle the dust was coming up from near Methode implies she had already beaten the Fern clone. Denken/Ubel/Land are all fine despite the 5 on 3 they got pincered into. Ehre and Scharf are once again immobile but Wirbel is just fine.

I’m surprised I didn’t make this comparison earlier. But frierens comfortability with Zoltraak is the same as older people’s ability to understand technology. For most of my life I’ve had a phone, so adjusting to the new tech is really easy because it’s been with me for a long time. The same can’t be said for older folks

This is just speculation, even the manga hasn't really explained it yet. But.. Frieren's trump card did create that magic circle beneath the clones feet that suggests it is still a spell. But it seems to be a spell so advanced it's indistinguishable from a demons curse. So far beyond normal magic it's impossible to defend against or detect unless you also already know how to do it yourself and are on a similar level. Basically closer to directly warping reality like a god and controlling a fundamental force like Gravity directly, rather than using a traditional spell. Even though the effect was simple, the implications of the near instant use time combined with Fern being unable to detect it, recognize it as magic, or even perceive mana being used honestly makes it completely terrifying. Especially in a 1v1. The downside being that it also leaves the caster wide open, which the real Frieren took advantage of.

OH MY FUCKING GOD I JUST REALIZED. When Frieren gets stuck in the mimic there are a couple other mimics in the background that are dying meaning that Frieren fell for multiple mimics, in the same room, ONE AFTER THE OTHER. Yeah I completely understand the disappointment from Fern.

What Frieren did was already kind of explained on how Ubel's magic work. Imagination. Ubel's magic work so much because she just simply imagine cutting hair and cloth. It goes thru defensive magic because its went beyond what the spell can do, it became a "natural phenomenon of cutting hair and cloth". In the same way that Frieren used mana to manipulate a natural phenomenon that all of us everyday experience, GRAVITY. It was also kind of shown before when Frieren cut the demon's arms without using a staff. She can just basically manipulate mana into a natural phenomenon rather than casting spells.

One thing to clarify is that Ubel does see/detect the defensive mana in the cloak/hair, she is just able to so completely disregard it in favor of her perfect image of cutting it that she is able to pierce said defenses.

Great reaction man. I like that you understand the magic system very well. Ive seen some people misunderstood ubel’s magic that she beat sense (and burg the other 1st class mage) bcause she is simply strong or a genius. Madhouse gone absolutely insane in this episode. Frieren got to be one of the best shows ive ever seen visually.

its interesting how the way they explain the visualization aspects of magic. Ubel could visualize not only cutting through the Immovable cloak but also that she couldn't help herself from being able to imagine her spell cutting through Burg which resulted in her slicing completely through the target she said she cut to deep so she was imagining cutting Burg with the spell when she cast it. I think she would have been able to bind Sense with sorganiel if she had been able to think of her hair as not part of the body but just some extension or had been able to mentally separate the main body from the hair itself.

The attack probably does use mana. It’s just so beyond the comprehension of most modern mages that Fern cannot even perceive it as a spell. In essence, it probably is perceived like demonic curse spells which cannot be analyzed.

What a sick episode... Shouldve known a Frieren doesnt go down that easily. I'd guess Fern's staff can probably just be repaired with a spell if Frieren has an appropriate one. Or maybe Fern can just re-materialize it since they usually materialize their staffs out of thin air. We'll see about that.

Even if in the manga there isn't any explanation for Frieren trump card, it is implied that can be some type of demonic magic, since it cannot be perceived as magic and coincidence that she used it 80 years ago wich was the battle against the Demon King, that or its some kind of manipulation of gravity itself, but that would be even further from human comprehension and more close to a demon curse

there is definitely enough content for s2 already, s1 will end roughly around chapter 60, the current manga has 120+ chap

"Frieren would never make such a face" We know the copies share the knowledge and memories of them and we never have seen Frieren even remotly beeing challenged so what if she is? That really gets you wondering what happened with the demon lord.

First of all R.I.P. Akira Toriyama, the true legend of battle shounen manga / anime. Second, that's why Ubel is my GOAT. I remember thinking if they would show us her fight against Sense's clone in here, bc in the manga they didn't, and i know why: it wasn't even a fight, it was a completely annihilation. And her backstory too, really cool.

amazing job by madhouse i think ubell magic has a lot to do with her "feeling" things (like how she copy other people magic). Hence why she explain how she cut the defence magic using the fabric and scissor. For sense even thou magic is about imagination, as an intelectual being we cannot 100% imagine cutting throu a defence magic imbued cloak, especially with the name like "immovable cloak" is already altered our mind to think it was not any normal cloak. Hence why she said ubell is not thinking like a human, she basically closer to a magical beast that can use magic because of instinct. Frieren said she wasn't using that technique since 80 years ago, so that's mean she only using it when battle the demon king? so the demon king is strong enough that she pushed to the corner despite being in full party with the heroes.

From what I can interpret here If your defensive spell is intregrated into the nature in some shape or form, you're fucked against Ubel, since anything that involves nature can be cut in one way or another. The only way to defeat her is by using truly unimaginable things

This episode really was a… cut above the rest. Which is saying a lot. I’m very satisfied with how they adapted this arc. So I cannot wait for the next arc whenever the longggg wait for S2 will be. Also how they will adapt the final bits of this test haha.

The spell frieren use in simple terms is a magic that is undetectable, ublockable, imperceptanle and invisible. Same like how demons magic curses, you can not guard against it. Mages in their world relies in mana detection, even in fights when other mages use a spell you guard it through mana detection, so what frieren use probably a spell that manipulate phenomena to the point that its natural, same thing as if you analyze a storm/typhoon, its something that isnt created by magic but something natural to the world, or like a gravity, you cannot analyze it bc its a natural phenomena not created by magic

That look was when the clone finally decided Fern was a proper threat and stopped playing around. Also: I love how most of the mages in the show have one big attack they unleash when it's all or nothing but Frieren and her clone just bust out finishers like they're about to go bad. Seems like most human mages work with the magical equivalent of a diesel engine while Frieren had a thousand years to cultivate herself into a nuclear reactor.

She said she hadn't used that spell for 80 years. Remember what happened 80 years ago? The Demon King died...so that spell was used last time in that fight.

Dont underestimate mommy Methode❤️ for me, i think she's more versatile and stronger than fern. This is what makes this anime good because the mechanics of powers can let weaker(mana) mages defeat stronger ones depending on the situation. I kept on saying that kanne can defeat freiren in the rain if they were to battle because freiren even said she cant do imagine defeating her. Thats why you should pay attention to the words they are saying.

When you see the cat no matter how much you try to imagine that it's the dragon your mind still say "it's the cat". That cloak might looks like just a normal cloak to us but to the mage that's might be like the unbreakable wall. We people can't imagine ourself to use a sword to slicing through the wall, even if you can imagine that you still not truely believe that you could do it anyway so it's not perfect imagination. Ubel is just something else😂.

Insane to think that Methode fought Fern's replica and left unscathed, she's a beast too

The frieren +fern vs fake frieren fight was great, especially in comparison to the rest of the show. Normally we have rather simple figths, like Zoltraak and shields on one side and some specialised magic on the other (fern vs Lügner for example) or something easy to understand like Übels cutting magic vs Wirbel blocking her cuts with his shield and then restraining her. But then we have "both" frieren going crazy throwing epilepsy inducing light shows, creating a black hole, making a golem for apparently no reason, an even bigger ligth show, throwing around pure darkness and finally unleashing focused conquerer haki to crush fern (I just call it that for now). It stands in stark contrast with the rest of the show and makes it seem almost strange and foreign to the story (a pointer to current mages beeing very different to ancient mages as frieren has pointed out mutliple times maybe?) And of course it ends with frieren beeing stuck in not one but three mimicks🤣. When the explained the spiegel I was thinking that its ability was not sounding strong enough to be such a hurdle, and concluded that there needed to be more to it, beeing able to make copies of its enemies more than once was one of the things I thought it was capable of so I am happy the story showed that^^.

Fern is not as strong as people are thinking though, she's not even top 5 mages inside the dungeon; Frieren, Sense, Denken, Wirbel and Methode all could easily defeat her, Edel probably could as well. Don't know why the anime made it seem like Methode was struggling against her clone when in the manga she was just chilling lol. But now the real question: What are your bets for the third exam? Who do you think will become a First Class Mage?
