The Horn solo-piece „Cynddaredd - Brenddwyd“ is an expansion of the Horn solo in Concerto con soli per tutti for orchestra (2000) of Heinz Holliger. The Gaelic (scottish language) title means "Fury - Dream" or more like a "Nightmare". The revised work Cynddaredd - Brenddwyd has been released in 2004 as a solo piece for Horn solo.
All the technical refinements of the modern Horn playing are explored in this short but highly demanding work. It is hard to find a passage that does not include special effects. Right from the beginning, muted, half-muted, trilled and many more unusual techniques are requested in extreme dynamic differences. Half-pressed valves with glissandi or singing while playing have a great part in the piece.
The composer demonstrates a usage of the old, natural Horn playing, into the modern possibilities. The indications "Horn in E" or "Horn in D" refers to specific valve combinations which are required to produce the corresponding overtones when playing a specific note or series of notes. The natural series notes numbers are indicated in the musical score for reference. This special way of composing, marks out the natural incomparable intonation and reminds the sound of a Cor de chasse, which has been played this way.
For me this piece means much, through the title it makes a programmatic sense for me as I can tell with it my feelings. We are all expose to horrible news and many of us experience wars and deaths. These nightmares, I can tell exactly with this specific piece, Fury - Dream, Nightmare.
