I ordered chrysanthemums from Bluestone Perennials after watching one of your first videos on mums and I have really enjoyed them. I was worried last summer when we broke records on triple-digit heat here in Texas but they pulled through and bloomed in the fall. Thanks for introducing us to heirloom chrysanthemums.

I did the same. I ordered some chrysanthemums after Amanda's video on bluestone perennials, and these flowers did so great. They flowered in the fall, and now, almost 1 year, they got so tall and healthy and about to bloom.

Which side of the house do you have your mums? Also in Texas ❤

@@summerofstacey6676 I ended up placing two orders. I received one order at the end of March. Each time I order I buy their multi-pack to save a little money. Anyway, I have two on the north side of the house, one on the west side, and the rest on the south side. The mum on the west side gets hammered with the afternoon sun and it was my smallest one. I was worried about it but it made it through the summer even with water restrictions. It was definitely the smallest one but now you can't tell. It is a healthy plant and is covered with buds. I hope that helps.

You are the one who got me inspired last year to grow chrysanthemums last year. I started two varieties by seed from baker creek and and now I'm not sure if they are hybrid or heirloom. They all germinated and look beautiful. This will be my learning year. Thanks for sharing your mess! It's reality.

@shesamadgardener ok, I pulled the seed packet out and thee are actually from Johnny's seeds and Chinese asters. Tower violet aster and king sized apricot aster. I'm still learning and not sure if these are hybrid or heirloom or classified as chrysanthemums. It gets confusing. Lol. Think they'll be be beautiful though and maybe next year I'll order some perennial chrysanthemums.

Great video. You really got me hooked on heirloom chrysanthemums, last year. I bought from Bluestone Perennials. I'm a lot older than you are so want established plants. My French Vanilla also bloomed earlier than the others. Mine are on a slope that faces west and gets intense afternoon sun. They lasted right up until a hard frost. They even survived some massive digging due to a leaking underground pipe.I didn't mulch them during the winter. We had a mild winter and they have come back nicely this spring, 7b. Didn't know they were heavy feeders so will be more aware of fertilizing. I'm ready to order more.

I planted some little ones that were in Walmart clearance. In spring they have some of the bigger mums blooming. They grow to be absolute bushes 4' tall and are going on year 4 now. It's always a gamble if I'll get blooms because they won't bloom until November. I would love to try some earlier varieties and support small propagators. Can't wait to see yours bloomed out

Great content! Sorry I’ve not been consistent. Life 🙄. I’ve purchased from Kings waited a year to get o the list- not disappointed. Dan Cooper Gardener is great on how to grow Mums in pots successfully. Good to know I am starting my mum cuttings the exact same way as you.! I do have a problem with some of my mums though. Have you thought of doing a video on the different types of pests and diseases that affect mums and how to correct? I think that would be a great video. I did find spider mites on some of my moms so I am using so we dishwater to correct that but it seems as though there’s a secondary issue at the base of the plant. I barely even touched the branch and it just fell right off in my hand so I gave it a cut and repotted it but I just keep wondering what’s going on. Maybe it’s something in my soil. It’s not a good thought, taking all these out and repotting them in inoculated soil.🥺☹️🙄 I’m going to try some amendments from Luke over at Mi Gardner that he has in his shop

I too placed an order for perennial chrysanthemums through Bluestone Perennials. I was very impressed with their website and the many plants they offered, especially the chrysanthemums. I love those Heirloom Chrysanthemums but I think my summers may be too hot, it’s the reason I can’t grow dahlias. Usually my summer is anywhere from 100 - 110. I felt so disappointed for you when those cuttings arrived, they were so dry and I’m not surprised there was nothing to keep them moist. I’ve never seen plants arrive like that without moisture. I really hope they survive for you which I’m sure they will as you’ll be watching them carefully haha.

@@shesamadgardener I had challenges with the heirloom mums I didn't get into the ground by mid-april. They didn't get established and the heat got to a few of them. I used shade cloth on other ones and that helped. I bought a few from Goose Creek that were slightly larger than yours but I just got them Saturday. They are amazing for a Fall show. I second your comment on cutting back earlier. I had some blooming in early January. I'm planning to stop cutting back by June 1st. The fall bloom time is impacted if we get 100 degree weather in mid to late Sept like we did this year in DFW. Mine get some afternoon sun which both helps and hurts them so I use shade cloth in the summer to help. Each plug in one year has turned into 12 to 24 inches by 6 to 12. It's pretty insane the growth. The bigger the flower type, the larger the growth for me. I did disbud and the flowers got huge. I'm definitely doing it again. It was worth it. For example, with Cheerleader, I got 8 large flowers. This year, it will be more like 24. I'm also experimenting on seeing if a few buds flower by June. If not, I’ll just disbud for the fall. I also grow Dahlias. These mums are 10x with similar results. Dahlias still are amazing but they are so much work and issues in Texas. I'm trying to use 15 to 20 gallon pots (versus grow bags) to see if that works better. I find by June I have to cut them to the ground or pests or disease get to them no matter what I use. I did start a few of them in November and they are flowering now. I suspect I'll get a month of decent flowers before I have to cut them back. My goal with a pots is to move them around and bring them inside now and again and see if that gets me a better fall show.
