Today we show you how we take softwood cuttings to get more Fall mum plants. Many beautiful Fall Mums are not under plant patent protection and you are free to propagate them. This can greatly increase the blooms in your Fall Garden for fantastic Fall colors. We use this technique to boost extra plantings of our most popular varieties that we use for cut flowers. This technique can be used on any plant that is not under plant patent protection to get you more plants for little or no cost.

I've bought heat mats before but they can be a pain. This year I started using the heat registers in the house. Just elevate your tray about a foot above in some way. It works great! Heat is on this time of year anyway. No expense for heating mats either. Great video...thanks!

I found some of these and man do they produce cuttings and flowers a real looker ..from one I now have 100 mammas. All fixing to get first snip . so will near double . all of one plant in one yr.

After the cutting has roots what's the next three steps? From what I understand you have to do a lot of cutting on these to keep them from blooming, correct? Doing this they get bushier and flower better when fall comes??

I don't know much about mums but now I'm confused about it I thought it was a fall flower plant. It actually blooms in the summer though, correct? but you got to cut it before it blooms to keep it from blooming is what I understand? I'm in North Georgia and I'm pretty sure it's considered a perennial here??

I've been nurturing my mums since last fall and they were just beginning to grow and some were beginning to bloom. I have several sons who cut my grass for me since I was widowed. I forgot to tell one of my sons to make sure not to cut them, and sure enough he cut them flat to the ground thinking they were weeds. I'm heartbroken, will they grow back?

we have a lot fresh cut flowers directly from the growers Netherlands when they get to the flowershop maybe 5 to 6 hours kept in water cool you think cuttings can be taken from them

If we are in tropical country when we do propagating do we still need to put the cover on it .. tks
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 3 года назад
Hi @tst tan Probably not if your humidity is high. although I would check on them a couple of times a day and mist them with water at least once a day for the first week.
@rmusick60
@rmusick60 3 года назад
Can I get away without using the humidity dome and have the cuttings grow successfully?
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 3 года назад
Hi @Ryan Musick Yes you can still start the cuttings without a dome. However they need humidity so the best option is to mist them several times per day to keep the moisture level around the plants up. Also keep them out of direct sun and in an area such that wind or air currents don't dry them out/

After taking the cutting and slicing at an angle, are you aiming at slicing above or below a leaf node or does that not matter? When I do dahlia cuttings I'm slicing just below a leaf node, so if I was to use this technique of carving away at the cambium it would expose above and below a node correct? Thanks so much for the content!!
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 5 лет назад
Hi Mike. I haven't really noticed a difference in rooting effect if my angled slice is below above or thru a leaf node. I think the key is to get the rooting hormone on the cambium cut. Not sure on Dahlias though whether that is more important. It would be interesting to see a comparison of the techniques on dahlia cuttings and see if it does make a difference. So far my success rate on mum rooting is pretty high, about 95+%. Maybe I should try a comparison and see if I can up my game! Thanks for watching!

I have a mum plant that is about 2 feet tall (bloomed really well but is now toppling over). I looked at the plant and about the first foot of each stem is just "stem no leaves". How can I start it over without killing it?
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 3 года назад
Hi @cenedraa mum's when they are finished blooming need to be cut down to ground level. They will aggressively regrow strong new stems. The plants only bloom on new growth so any new growth from the base of an old stem will be weak and not a very good quality. Hope this helps.

@@BareMtnFarmHi, Can you tell what needs to be done for some reason on potted plants. How should we maintain the mums in winter just in pots...Should we cut all the way to pot level or should we only cut tops/ dried parts to get new growths and bloom in spring/fall?
