I grow mostly heirloom or open pollinated hybrids because I like to save seeds from my favorite fruits. But sometimes I learn of an intriguing hybrid variety and I have to give it a go. Thanks for this explanation of the differences.

Wild Boar Farms has some interesting hybrids to check out. I grew their Berkley Pink Tie-Dye several years in a row with good success. They sell some of their stuff through Baker Creek but you can also get seeds from their website. I found that their hybrids are one of the exceptions when it comes to lacking flavor. They have some tasty hybrids!

I grow Heirloom tomatoes because we put them up every year and taste with meatiness is very important. I do find that the shelf life of heirloom tomatoes is a bit less than hybrid varieties but we just do the best we can with what we get. We also do several batches instead of doing the canning all at once. This past summer I found that I actually had to go do some pollinating myself because the bee and bumble bee populations had a late start. I found this interesting and I don’t know what made this happen. I didn’t realize hybrid varieties started after WWII, I thought they were later than that. Thank you for the information as I didn’t know that much about what heirloom meant either.

Hybrid varieties were first done much earlier than WWII, but it it was around 1951 than it really began to become more wide spread and by the 1970's they became more of a staple for seeds commercially sold. I agree canning done in smaller batches is much easier! I usually only do about 6 or 8 jars at a time with tomatoes, and just keep the rest in the freezer until I'm ready to can them.

I am going with a variety of Heirloom Tomatoes this year myself. I generally grow a few Heirloom varieties each year anyways. I've grown Early Girl Tomatoes the past 2 years. Great producer and early tomatoes, but the flavor has been lacking to say the least. Time for more flavor.

I don't know if I have done Early Girl before, although I often see the seeds for sale. For heirloom so far my two favorites have been the Purple Cherokee and Dr. Wyche yellow. The Dr. Wyche seems to stand up better to disease over the past three years, produce really big meaty tomatoes and are normally the last ones still going in my garden.
