I wouldn't be smiling either if I were being asked such tedious questions. She was a great artist, and did her best with Rose's idiocy.

It's really pathetic how she manages to talk almost pseudo intellectually and kind of snobbishly about these arguably rather deplorable paintings. She comes across like a completely undignified fool. Really tough to watch.

Very good! I agree. Charlie should have stuck with reading the news on the CBS Morning Show . . .

These always turn into “I’m Rose and want to use this time to show how much I am in “the know” and I’ll do this to stifle your existence in the duration.”

Charlie Rose has screwed up so many interviews of artists. He comes so seemingly bright eyed and yet eventually is wholly unprepared for any real discussion.

Exactly. I thought, what an odd interview. She was so relaxed and forthcoming and he just didn't know what to do with it. Unfortunate.

As a fan of Frankenthaler's work this interview is disappointing. I don't want to hear the interviewer raving on with his opinions. Questions about who influenced her can give background but Ms Frankenthaler is an established, influential, renowned artist. Disappointing. Let her speak about herself and her work.

gotta agree. he kept jumping on her, it was a bit suffocating, she should've had the time and space to speak

Helen is a methodical and intelligent artist who needed time to formulate the thoughts and words carefully. Being that the program is less that 15 minutes, it doesn't allow for much depth to pull through. Charlie had good questions and it's unfortunate the Frankenthaler couldn't respond properly without him jumping to the next question. There doesn't seem to be many live interviews of her.

Rose was a blow hard... and often missed the point he seemed to desire to know.

Frankenthaler's outing of the "PC" culture is priceless. Rose, a now dethroned 'A' lister, makes the whole context of this interview fascinating if not a little bizarre.

true that.

I don’t think she was talking about the PC culture. Rather her point was focused on the nature of art, that being more playful than being so exclusive to a certain political context or a specified political cause. It doesn’t mean however that art and politics are completely separable from each other. I think she was aware of that.

Not a great interview but at least Charlie (despite all his shortcomings) made an effort to interview these artists. Who else outside of the art world did this? Or at least as much as he did.

The greatest art comes out of adversity....and being brought up never having to be concerned about the money her work is pointless its been given the green light by the establishment and critics such as Clement Greenberg, her ex? But now its establishment this is the bar set by those in the art world playing a game of chess and they say who can play

Color Field Painting is interesting, but as an artist and student of art history, it is NOT the height of artistic excellence. Most of the Abstract Expressionists owe their careers to the intervention of the Central Intelligence Agency (verified historical fact) and people like Clement Greenberg, who built their reputations on the government funded and heavily propagandized exploitation of the Abstract Expressionist movement as a political tool. If you doubt that, I suggest you do some research in scholarly publications.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think anyone is saying that color field painting is the “height of artistic excellence”. Celebrating a particular category of art does not mean it’s being placed above other categories.

Frankenthaler has produced some wonderful pieces. It’s a shame that she is such a grim person, evidently incapable of smiling. One wonders what life events brought about such a sour demeanor. Tedious as she is to watch, the interview would have been.worthwhile had she talked more about her methods and materials. Charlie Rose made a valiant effort though.
