When Macdonald’s father suddenly died, she felt as if she, too, had been struck down. Near despair, she turned to nature-not for comfort, but for its wild and uncompromising spirit, numbing her grief by learning the ancient skills of falconry. Now available in paperback, H is for Hawk-the Costa Book of the Year and winner of the Samuel Johnson Prize-chronicles how Macdonald found companionship first with T.H. White’s The Goshawk, then with her own hawk, Mabel, learning the raptor’s ways as she emerged from a debilitating grief.

Kevin joe.i I know u don't understand because what makes you think the bird was enslaved?.falconers free fly their birds. They can leave whenever they want.they choose by their own free will to return to the falconer.why? Because they learn to realize that the falconer is a great source of food and shelter. In the wild they will go for a few days without catching food.the falconer is the easiest source of food and safety

@@mikedun8882 I am sorry that I can not agree with you. I think the Falcon is domesticated and disoriented of its own nature, in the same way that the slaves think they rely on slave-owners for a living instead of they feeding the slave-owners. The British used to justify its imperialism in a similar way ,too . They think they help the underdeveloped countries to access the civilization, but how many crimes have they committed in the name of fraternity and kindness?
