Some say Helen was done at 14 years old after the Beatles came to play. Well, not so. Helen is alive and well and still has the voice of an angel. She may sing gospel, may sing rock, may sing jazz, with her voice she can sing country! Whatever Helen wants to sing I want to hear.
I'm so happy her story had a happy ending. I saw her in a video singing a song to 3 of the Beatles, and I wondered if a girl beginning so young would be destroyed by the system, like so many. I am so happy to hear that she's still alive, well, looks great, still has her wonderful singing voice and has found her true vocation.
She is such a nice vocal, love listening to most of her songs especially Little Miss Lonely, Do you have any of her theme song? How is everything going on with you Anne and the family 💕
I was the little boy in the Ready Steady Go clip where Helen sings: Look Who It Is. I was too young to dance being only ten years old but Ringo rehearsed us in head nodding as an alternative. Paul Mc Cartney was there that night but busy dancing with Cathy Mc Gowan! Fab days!
Thanks for the anecdote. I watched the video of that routine a few weeks ago and was wondering where Paul would have gone off too. Now I know! 😊. Now I need to find out who Cathy McGowan is!
Next to Judith Durham (RIP) of The Seekers I think she has one of the most beautiful, recognizable voices. Both voices are miles apart in sound but meet again in quality. And what a beauty.
What a beautiful story of this amazing singer. I’m still a lover of 1950-60s music and a few years ago when I heard “Walking Back to Happiness” I had no idea who she was when I heard it but was amazed at her talent and beautiful voice!
Wow!!! What a voice!! So happy to hear that she didn't fall into the " my life is over " syndrome like some poor souls. The ending of this video was very inspiring. Here's a woman not afraid to speak about her love for Jesus in this age of skeptics and mockers. Good for her. Her religion kept her grounded. Wonderful to have learned about this strong woman!!!
She is such a nice vocal, love listening to most of her songs especially Little Miss Lonely. How is everything going on with you Catherine and the family 💕
I worked with Helen on what was to be her last concert in October 2002, at The Fairfield Hall Croydon. I had worked with her when she was working with Humphrey Lytteltons band previously. A really genuine and lovely lady, what you see is what you get with her...
Bless you Miss Shapiro! It takes a lot, to stand up in front of a crowd and sing. Whether it is, a local club with no sound system, et al. I cannot sing yet always admire people who can, & who have gave us beautiful music. Thank you xxx.
Literally had no idea who she was until today! I've had Walking to Happiness on repeat all day today! I have bought and downloaded two albums already!!! Love her voice!
Helen Shapiro l adore her voice. I was 13 yrs old at that time, around 1963...i regret not having heard her songs these last years, i mean new songs. Her voise is amazing. I love her. Lena frm Mauritius
What a great ending!! I grew up in the 50s and early 60’s and never heard of her until I began to deejay an oldies show in 1993! Needless to say her music became pat of my show
I fell in love with Helen when i first heard on the radio Don't Treat Me Like A Child i had not even seen her then i have since been to see her live on stage more times than i can remember quite often traveling hundreds of miles to do so.God Bless you Helen you brought a great deal of happiness to my life and you still do.
The popularity contest is a hard challenge, you have been there and done that and it still couldn’t hold you back Helen. Great skill and natural talent with spirit.
I am so glad that she is happy with her life, when I first heard her sing I knew that she had a remarkable voice, but because of its depth and timbre I immediately thought she would be better suited to Jazz. Fortunately she switched to that music. She is a remarkable lady..
What a an angels voice Helen had and still has. At fourteen years old Helen was the best in the UK. I wish she was in my high school back then! I would have been chasing this laddie across the pond, (LOL)
What a star Helen Shapiro was! And like Peggy March, Leslie Gore, in their youthful voices, we loved them and then they were gone in 5 or 6 years! I never forgot these ladies and their music! Still playing them today at almost 70 years old!
She still comes over as a very nice person. Back in the 60's singers shot to fame overnight. They could also descend just as quickly as music fashions changed. The music industry was then controlled by the men in suits, and they were the ones who made the real money. To them, a singer or group was just a money making machine.
We are very much the same age and was a big fan of Helen back in the day and am glad to know she continued her career in singing although not being in the charts she at least made a decent living from it. Unlike some one hit wonders who continue to moan about making a second come back. Not like Helen who has her feet firmly planted on the ground.
You have such a unique voice and I remembered how much I missed your pop hits in the 60s. But I rejoice with you that you have found your Messiah. It's the most Jewish thing one can do. Thank you for all the music.
Thanks for this retrospective video of an early 60's pop singer. Helen Shapiro was unknown to me here in the US at the time of her popularity in the UK. I very much enjoyed watching your video.
Helen Shapiro was fresh, and new, and strong. I very much lived that era and I lived it in the centre of the world...London where everything happened. I loved her and her 'newness.' In my opinion she was successful in spite of her publicity...even looking back on it now with a lifetime of inside knowledge. She was, as they say, 'real'.....but she really was...she pretty much invented 'real.' I rather hope I shall get to speak with her one day.
But how does one get in touch with someone like that....and don't say, The Fan Club. That is designed to say all the right things and to keep people away from them.
Excelente Helen Shapiro me encantas desde que empecé a oír tus Canciones que Grandes Recuerdos de todas tus Presentaciones y más con THE BEATLES 🙌👏👏♥💐💮🌼🇲🇽
@@phyllisjonson7501 Discovered my Jewish roots about 25 years ago and since then have aligned with a more Messianic approach to faith. Christ was Jewish by birth, thereby Yeshua fits best for me calling upon the Living Savior of that day.
Helen did a season on South Pier Blackpool during her heyday and struck up a friendship with the girl next door to me Elaine , Elaine brought Helen home to meet her Mum and I happened to be in the front garden of our house when Elaine walked through the gate and she said "Hi Vince have you met my friend Helen" and I looked up and my chin hit the floor because she was top of the pops I just looked flabbergasted and both girls just laughed but in a nice way, good memories
@Freda Jordan All free for open discussion! So freda yourself from all your unimportant ignorant opinion of nonsense LOL ...Freedom of speech will always remain the power !!
She had the wrong management team. Lennon & McCartney had written a song for her (Misery), but her management team wouldn't let her sing it. Too bad she wasn't with Brian Epstein.
Helen never seems to have looked her age when she started out. Her hairstyle and clothes - at least in the clips shown here - make her look like an adult. Her distinctive low voice added to that, since she certainly didn't sound 14.
She is such a nice vocal, love listening to most of her songs especially Little Miss Lonely. How is everything going on with you Allison and the family 💕
"Little miss dynamite" >>> Brenda Lee was female world number 1 star of rock & roll singers of the 60s with Connie Francis ..Then came Dusty Springfield / Cilla Black / Lulu..etc Shapiro was no contest to them!!
@@timthompson6194 Brenda, Connie and Dusty are great singers, and I like Cilla and Lulu too, but neither Cilla or Lulu can hold a candle to Helen Shapiro.
She is such a nice vocal, love listening to most of her songs especially Little Miss Lonely. How is everything going on with you Sharon and the family 💕
Her style was going out of fashion. If she was eclipsed by the Beatles, don’t forget that even Elvis was overshadowed by their fandom. But they lasted for less than a decade, and their later careers traded heavily on on their ‘60s fame. That and Lemon’s tragic fate.
In terms of quality of voice, I think Connie Francis edged every other female singer of the time. Her power, accuracy, ability to hit and hold top notes others would avoid, combined with the effortless V8 performance marked her out as extra special. Brenda Lee was a great favourite of mine too, as well as Patsy Cline. Brenda had a fabulous earthy quality to her voice, unerring timing, and the ability to be a genuine rocker. When Helen arrived, the aforementioned 3 were all very well established, and Connie and Brenda were almost unrivalled amongst females for chart success. But Helen removed them, albeit for a fairly short time before the groups did their work of finishing off the chart careers of so many single artists. Helen was quite dynamic by early 60s standards, and I thought that she developed into a classy jazz singer.
I found her last night when browsing through some 60s songs. Wow what a treat! Unfortunately the local DJs here in California never put her records on the turntable.
Her life was turned up side down in meeting Jesus, boy do I understand this life changing encounter that only Him can access to the deepest of your being...
@@kennethraymondmoore , i not only understand your stance (because i shared it), i also understand *why* you hold that stance. For the unsaved man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: even they are foolishness to him: neither _can_ he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1Cor 2:14 best wishes.
Mom met her in the 60s when she toured with billy fury my moms idol saw her in 2009 at my old school in Birmingham great Barr where she did a talk obviously about finding Jesus went with my late father and daughter happy memories
**It's too bad that 'Groups are 'in'...and solos are OUT!' by '64...if Helen had been promoted in America, she would have been equal to Leslie Gore or 'Pet' Clark, but her age worked against her, as well as being almost 'unknown' in the U.S. at a crucial time period** (to be fair, once the 'Fabs' had made their appearance on 'Sullivan'...times were extremely tough for American performers, especially the 'solo' vocalists...many found themselves 'dropped' from a contract that a year before was 'rock-solid' and others couldn't get even a single booking at a 'Fair' or a 'store-opening' )**But that 'voice' coming from such a young girl with a 'Brit' accent would have been 'TV Gold' in 1964! **
Stuart Maconie speaks with authority as though he actually remembers Helen Shapiro at the hight of her success - he was only just 1 year old in 1961 so he's hardly an expert.
Helen Shapiro has found Jesus ! I know the feeling . What contentment , knowing you are loved by the Savior and your future is in His hands . Best decision of your life .
In 1962, or thereby, she said that Petula Clark (Sailor and My Friend the Sea) was for older listeners. Three years later Petula was at the top of the American charts and selling millions of records to teenagers across the world and Helen was already a pop has been. How fortunes can change.
