She was the youngest female singer ever to reach number 1 in the uk charts in 1961 with this song. She was 14 , and still at school. The record still stands.
My mum has dementia and this was one of her favourite songs, we're sitting in the sun listening to this, and she starts singing along!! What a beautiful moment and what a beautiful song x
My mum taught me to sing all her songs when I was young she had dementia later in life and I would sing them to her she didn't know who I was then listening to her sing gives me a bit of my mum back
Do you feel like crying when you listen to those oldies, thinking of the People who were with us then, and now gone forever ? I do ! No shame to feel so sad !
Hi Yvonee, well said, very true !, really pleased you've found youtube. I've been using it for some years now, it's an invaluable aid for discovering and researching music our 50s radio show as SO many have been uploaded, and so many wise people have contributed interesting facts and stories to support the tunes. Only trouble is its an easy way of "wasting" several hours..... but more fun than the pub and FAR cheaper and healthier too !!
Her voice on this (she was only 15) was astonishing, so mature and emotional. She remains one of the UK's greatest-ever female pop stars. Such a sad, wistful song, you can hear the longing in her voice, and you just want to reach out and give her a big hug. Thanks for posting this - maybe a new generation will realise just what a great singer we had in Helen.
@@junpet47 I believe Helen is still performing in a singing trio, at various concerts, and is heavily into her chosen religious belief’s….. I wish her well.
Any other sixteen year olds who sing along to her songs in 2020? It'd be so nice to know I'm not the only one here who hardly listens to the music from my own era :/
1961----- she was 14 I was 16 and starting to find out what girls and young love was all about. This song takes me right back to those special teen years and I still get a thrill from hearing it at 74
Im 71yrs and still love him i was too yoyng never married he was my life but was 22 and he was 57 treated me with love and remained the nost great freiends forever sad i still spend a lonoless life witbout himm
Amazing how that voice came from a such a young woman. I marvel at Helen’s gift. I love her music, it is so joyful and hopeful even when she is singing of pain and loss.
So you were still a teenager when this song came out. And I was in my early twenty and loved all those sixties songs. Take care Shelia, and keep going . !!
She's the spitting image of my mum as I remember her best. Glamorous in the 60's and smiling constantly. I'd give anything to have both her and this kind of music back permanently. A happy and more innocent time.
Such a strong and powerful voice for one so young, I can play this over and over, just as fresh each time. Definitely her best song for me, better than "Walking back to Happiness".
In 1961 I was a shy 12 year old boy who was just discovering the attraction of the opposite sex and this song spoke to my romantic soul in a deep way, and strangely enough it still does now as a not so shy and time weary 73 year old, good songs and music can do that to you, and can also carry you back in time to remind you of those young innocent, sensitive adolescent feelings, Helen's sexy and soothing voice compliment a wonderful song with sweet nostalgia.
hi Alan, I just saw googles tribute today to Dusty Springfield. Then by looking for her I found all the other female singers of the early 60ies. As a young german au-pair girl in London at the time I knew and admired them all. What a time that was, which never comes back. What an untroubled, easygoing life that has been. All comments here are full of those our age and I thought: Nostalgie once it grabs you........ ;o))
@@juttaweise Hi Jutta, I just found your message, thanks for taking the time and effort to reply, it would seem that you have had an interesting and adventurous life as a young person, and you most probably have some interesting stories to tell. Another UK singer from the same time period well worth checking out is Julie Grant, listen to "Count On Me" "When You Ask About Love" "So Many Ways" "Then, Only Then" they all have that wonderful special 1960s sound.
Word for word I identify with your comments Alan. I was also 12 in 1961 and this song touched me then, and still does all these years later. Powerfully nostalgic for this time weary 74 year old !
Your songs were part of what built my romantic teenage memories. Now I’m 71, the years have flown away and I’m still remenecing those teenage memories when I hear your songs. I still love your voice and your songs. God bless you. Regards from Holland.
It's a shame she was hardly known in the USA. I first heard her sing on Radio Caroline Flashback and was floored to learn she was only 14 at the time of this recording. Such a full and rich voice for someone her age.
I completely agree! I was a boy at this time in the United States, We had Connie Francis and Brenda Lee back then. Helen Shapiro was clearly on par with the aforementioned. Such beauty, class, and talent- had she become well known in the U.S.A. her record company would have had a walking, talking, and an even bigger walking, talking, gold mine on their hands. She was fantastic!
It was a shame because I missed out on her talent and voice for nearly 60 years. Therefore it was NOT good enough from my end. No one ever claimed foreign acts had to become popular in the U.S.A.
One of the greatest songs of the 60's sung by one of the finest female voices ever....wonderful. Haunting delivery which makes you shiver just listening to it. And to think she was only 14 at the time of recording - amazing!
I’ve just heard this song for the first time today and it just hit me, how beautiful it is. Young love & longing. We can all relate, no matter when we were born. The 60’s seemed like a great time to be young.
Grew up on this every Sunday mam would come home drunk put the radio gram coffin thing on and play this and make us dance rest her soul lovely voice helen
This just has to be the absolute summum of the perfect controle Helen had over her sublimely beautiful voice. At times it's unbelievable how she manages the intonation required to sing this difficult text so incredibly well.
Love Helen. This is my favourite song of hers. As others say, transports my mind back to that moment in time. Shame it can't take the body with it! : )
In years to come, when powerful sentient AI computers analyse the history of the human voice, Helen Shapiro's voice will be revered for it's spiritual purity. Thank you for the joy Helen. Love.
boy oh boy. I just wish I could host a radio show and play the music we really want to hear. Lyrics we can understand, a tune that makes us happy and the return of memories that can never be taken away. Just one hour per week, every week.
Chucko hosted an oldies radio show out of Columbus, Ohio every week back in the 80's-90's, but the new generation type music pushed him off the air. There were several good dj's around that came out of this era. Dick Biondi was another one. I am afraid we won't ever see a comeback of this fabulous music.
Helen Shapiro was everything I wanted to aspire to as I was still only in Primary School and she was the height of sophistication at 15! This was my favourite song and I used to play it and sing to it over and over again to get the tone right. Walking Back to Happiness was also a great song but You Don't Know was much more haunting. It also reminds me of a time when all of that quality of music just wafted through your home. It was lovely.
Completely agree. A really haunting melody. Makes me feel so nostalgic. I was 16 and used to listen to this on the jukebox in the coffee bars in Edgware Road. I also love, Please don't treat me like a child.
This song brings back so many memories of when I was a child, living in North London in the early 1960s, It's always been a favourite of mine and a reminder of much happier times of a very different life so long ago now. Many thanks for posting on RU-vid.
You're absolutely right! And so does Karen Carpenter. They've all got this beautiful, powerful but expressionless tone. I like them all but they don't move me.
I was infatuated by Helen Shapiro when she first arrived on the pop scene. I still have the biography "Pop Princess", and her photo hung on my bedroom wall for several years. Hearing her now still fills me with the same feelings, admiration for a fifteen year old girl who made the big time!
A fine song of unrequited love. The lady has an erotic timbre to her voice, slightly husky, very steady, very feminine and confident and sincere. A superb song and a deal better than a lot of the Beatles.
The Sixties - an era when singers did not have to be near naked on stage and covered with tattoos. A wonderful voice and a great song were quite enough.
All the best songs are from 50/60. Roy orbison Connie Francis Helen shapiro Billy Fury Roy orbison, ive always loved the old music. Also love 70s and most. I love Helen /Connie /orbison /and many others.
thank you helen your voice brings the memories of my younger days. I was 9 years old then. Voice are made to bring back so many things.. You dont know how much you mean a lot to people who are 60 years old. But do you know whenever we play this song to retirees in old folk home..They remember the good, bad, sweet, bitter and forgive ALL. Your voice is a good therapy for people who have forgotten and then recall past life and love peacefully. May God bless you.
