Hello everybody, I hope you all are doing well. This video was long overdue and a lot of unintended circumstances factored into the delay. Nevertheless, I did my best to deliver and I hope you all enjoy the video! If you would like to help support me and the channel, you can choose to do so on Patreon and get some neat rewards in return! www.patreon.com/Natures_Compendium For this video I once again had my friend Jason do the narration for me so I could spend more time animating. Rest assured I will continue to narrate the majority of the videos but in the near future I hope to have additional guests narrate videos for me as well. This will also be the last animation I make for the year and the last aquatic animal I'll be covering for a long time. Stay tune for next year as I will be tackling mostly Dinosaurs!

Certainly some of the most bizarre by today's standards. The Dimetrodon shown early in the video was actually a branching of ancestral not-quite-mammalian Synapsids (they would have been akin to a great-uncle & not the in the direct mammalian lineage like other Synapsids, which were akin to our grandfather) & were very likely warm-ish blooded when compared to Reptiles (Diapsids). Especially when aided by their solar-heat-catching, neural spine sail.

Some suggested reconstructions of Helicoprion suggest a more rotary sawing motion than merely up & down. Eg: • Open mouth wide. • Push jaw slightly forward (much like modern sharks). • Pull the jaw back towards the throat, creating a rotational sawing motion. • Simultaneously closing the mouth, creating suction to aid with swallowing. This would have given a greater cuttıng length - putting more of the teeth in contact with the prey - than a mere up & down motion. [ Kind of like a Sliding Mitre Saw vs a Drop Saw. (Only inverted.) ] It's also worth noting that the structure of the teeth in the spiral changed subtly over the animal's lifetime. The smaller 20mm teeth in the beginning/center of the whorl had a thinner enameloid coating (making them only suitable for soft-bodied squid), while the later, much larger 100mm (asymetrical, outer edge curved/inner edge straight) teeth were tough enough to carve up both fish & (potentially) even hard-shelled ammonites. They were a very successful clade, with fossil teeth whorls found over a 20 million year period, and in areas as diverse as the United States, Norway, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Japan & Australia.

@NaturesCompendium
@NaturesCompendium 2 года назад
It's a speculative ctenacanthiform, no specific species. It's mostly based off of Glikmanius since I couldn't find a specific species that was living at the same time and place as Helicoprion davisii. There are some fossils of a ctencanthiform from Phosphoria, hence why I decided to include it.
