I take you through the steps of how to recover if your helicopter gets jammed pedals. I go through Jammed pedals in the hover spinning to the right or the left. I also go through the procedures if your pedals get stuck on takeoff. I used the iphone 7+ and the GoPro Hero 6 to film this.
My name is Mischa Gelb and I own BC Helicopters with my wife Amy and my brother Sancho. I love taking the opportunity to bring you along to discover the life and adventures of a helicopter pilot.

As a non pilot, I find all these videos really reassuring for when I rarely fly on EMS helicopters. Whilst we have excellent pilots, for which I have trust in, helicopters always make me feel that they fly by magic! All these videos have given me a much greater understanding of why we do what we do during flights. You have however made me slightly gutted that I don’t have the time or cash to learn to fly one myself!

Who forgot to clear the floor of rolling items before takeoff? Had that happen on a mission in a UH-1H, when the pilot (Warrent 3) announced a jammed torque pedal on the air and the intercom he went opposite pedal which moved freely then went back to the right pedal and forced it using some muscle and the jammed pedal suddenly freed up after the coke can exploded all over both windshields and both pilots. They were very happy to get out of the bird after we completed the mission. It was the pilots soda that jammed the pedal. He actually volunteered to clean up the inside of the cockpit. After that incident the crew chief and I wouldn't let either of the pilots use anything other than a canteen which we handed them and returned to the canteen bag we used to hold them. Our pilot never again took a soda on a flight. 68-69

Came here from watching 3 ships roundup livestock in Australia. Just watched my 3rd or 4th lesson and pilot is one cool customer. Both students seem quite cool as well. I knew these small ships were used here in USA but dint know our neighbor to the north allowed them as well. Very cool!

Isn't the fenestron on the Cabri spinning 10 times faster than the main rotor? As far as I remember, it is the Robinsons where the TR spins 6 times faster. Anyhow, again great footage and a pleasure to watch!!

I've never even been inside ANY helicopter. However, after watching several of you videos, I believe I could fly one. I watched your videos several times and I memorized everything you did and said. I think about it during my day. I'll probably never actually fly. But I thank you for making me believe I could.

Awesome video again. Exzellent explanations, easy to understand if you are interested. One, maybe stupid, question: why do North American and European helicopters spin the rotor in opposite directions? Was it on purpose or just coincidentally? Keep up posting such great videos! Greetings from Vienna, Austria.
@PilotYellow

It's a great question. I'm not sure what the answer is. The French like to do things different I guess. If anyone else has an official answer I'd like to hear it.

Very nice!! A little info about "European" and "American" Helicopters.. Not all European Helicopters are clockwise like everybody thinks. Only Helicopters produced by the French part of Airbus, (former Aerospatiale) "AS", like the AS350, 120, 130, 365 are clockwise. The German Airbus side ("BO" Boelkow) is also counter-clockwise, like the BO105, BK (BoelkowKawasaki) 117, 145 etc.. In 1992, AS and BO merged together and became Eurocopter. By the way.. do you think this female controller (5:41) is American? If yes, then she was deeeeefinitely working at the tower in Hillsboro when I was training there in 2014.. :D Best, Mario

Hi Mischa, yet another very interesting video! A few questions: how come that pedals get jammed or stuck? And why don't I see any theory or training for jammed cyclic or collective? Don't they get jammed too? Is the mechanism for tail rotor control just too fragile?

wow that was cool I want to fly a helicopter I've always wanted to fly helicopter actually I flew RC helicopters back in the 70s but I want to do the real thing help me help me. please don't say european when you mean clockwise. Here in Germany the system Bölkow was developed, it's counterclockwise, and still today the H135 and H145, developed from the system Bölkow have counterclockwise rotors. There are some great helicopters from France like the Écureuil with the starflex has clockwise rotor and the gimbal cabri is French or think about Westland helicopter like the EH101 Merlin.

I don't think anyone really knows. Probably design preference in the early days. (By the way, not all European helicopters have CW rotating main rotors).

I think it's like the Metric vs Imperial systems. USA is way behind the rest of the world, hence back-asswards controls too. But at least everyone drives on the Right Side of the road, unlike those Brits who just like to be awkward !
@ComdrStew
@ComdrStew 6 лет назад
SnowTiger45 I agree with you I think America should go metric it is way easier to understand but I doubt it will happen here for a long time. Yes the UK drives on the wrong side of the road, they use metric except in travel they use miles and MPH which makes no sense. Ferinheight is weird also I mean 32 degrees is freezing? We are use to it but Celsius is easier zero degrees is freezing. Oh if you want to know Ferinheight to Celcius take F - 32 / 1.8. Celcius to Ferinheight is C x 1.8 + 32.
@beltrangarrote1982

There is no such thing as an "European helicopter" like we all were the same country and manufacturer. Italian Leonardo (former Agusta) and British Westland (now part of Leonardo) turn counter clockwise. Airbus helicopters (former Eurocopter) is a merge between the French and German Industry and only the french ones turn clockwise. Like the Cabri. So: just the French ones turn "the other way" from your point of view.

I always thought of getting into a life or death situation and my choice would be to steal an Air Plane or die. Now of course the owner would get their craft back, they'd just have to retrieve it un harmed in another location. Me.......I'd run to a Truck Stop and find a ride 3 or 4 states away. But any how, this is were learning to Fly might be a good thing to know. If you have any sense at all, you'd know were at War. The things we've seen go down over the past month with the Freeman High School shooting, The Las Vegas Shooting and the Wild Fires in California you'd know we're at War.
