This is a first rough test of a Cabri G2 helicopter on my home-built budget 2DOF Motion VR Sim. Now that helicopters are released in MSFS 40-year edition, I try to make it work with my custom-built controls and switches and motion data. See what happenes when all of that comes together...

Thinking "Will the landing be translated through the rig?" A resounding yes. Big smile.

We have the Cabri's from Vskylabs in xplane 11 here in abbotsford, bc, canada, modelled after the Cab's that are operated by B.C. Helicopters school...its neat to see them fly overhead as well now I get a chance to dream about flying them in MFS2020! Pilot yellow on RU-vid is the BCH owner taking students out to our glaciers/mountains/lakes...BC is indeed Beautiful

Thanks so much Roman for the time and effort you have put into this video. I'm building a motion rig myself and am excited about what the experience will be like in vr. Cheers!

Thanks, it's a whole new level of immersion when used in conjunction with VR and vibration feedback.

most people can solo hover a real helicopter after about 10-15 hours. Getting your mind around having to control all 3 controls (cyclic, collective, and pedals) simultaneously and the effect each control has on the other takes time. Having a relaxed grip on the controls helps a lot and that is one of the first things students need to overcome. After that, it's just practice and patience. Eventually your get so comfortable it's like getting in your car to drive to the shops.

You may be right, though I have a very good hand-foot coordination (from plaing a piano), understand the pysics etc. I'm sure I'd still need a lot of practice in a real heli, but probably less than some. From what I watched of the few "first lessons" on RU-vid it shouldn't be that hard to hover in place, many first-time students manage it for a while. Taxiing and moving while hovering of course is much harder. So I have a suspicion that ground effect hover is more difficult in the sim than real life, but I may be mistaken of course, as I never flew a real heli.

Hello. the way you were flying low to the may be giving you ground effect. try keeping your yaw as minimal as possible when approaching your mark.

Nice video, i think you need to relax a bit more in flight, if you are tense and rigid your flying will be jerky, if you relax then hopefuly your flying will be more fluid, your hover and landing i mean, no offense or disrepect, i am learning myself. Also...?? --Was the weather/wind settings playing a factor? I think realism settings are good to play with but weather or wind gusts make things much more tricky as you well know. Thanks buddy.

You're absolutely right. I'm sure with more experience it will get better. And starting with calm weather may be a good idea...

Hovering is definitely much harder when there is motion. I have a 3 DOF platform, and for this test, I killed the motion just to see how well I could hover the Cabri without being tossed around by the platform. As you can see, the hovering performance was excellent with all the assists turned off. I have Maxflightstick controls, so that helps as well. But having the motion turned on definitely feels a lot more realistic and is a lot more fun 😃 Here is a video I made to show hovering performance. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5RtrhphEJEI.html

Thanks, interesting video. I tried actually increasing sensitivity for my joystick, so it matches the movements of the in-flight joystick better, and it helped a bit. Still not 100% satisfied yet...

thanks for the video, it's very informative. can you elaborate on how you disabled the ground data telemetry? I'm rebuilding my motion rig now, and would like to disable this before flying for the first time. I'm using Sim Racing Studio to get the telemetry from MSFS to the motion rig.
@RomanDesignCanada
@RomanDesignCanada Год назад
I'm using FlyPT Mover software. It has "air" and "ground" sources for anything when using MSFS as a main source. I just uncheck "ground".

@@RomanDesignCanada I don't believe SRS has this option, but I'll have to play around with it. thanks for the reply!

can you share any details about your startup batch file? I'd like to automate the launching all of the disparate software pieces for each of my games.

You can get the BAT file from my motion sim file package - link in the description. You'll have to heavily edit it for your system, as I have menus there, file paths, CPU affinity settings for my particular 12-core CPU (5900X), killing unnecessary processes, launching all apps I need etc.

I tried to set up telemetry in flypt but I have a feeling that the pitch data for helo is not correct I couldn't get the pitch to the right speed and sensitivity with my platform and I tried pitch,( acceleration, position, speed)
@RomanDesignCanada
@RomanDesignCanada Год назад
I haven't noticed any pitch problems, except on the ground with ground source connected - the telemetry is total nonesne until I lift collective a bit, then it's calm again, and from thtere on it's normal. For now I just disconnected all ground sources in FlyPT for helis.

Any cogging issues or noticable with the heli on the DOF. I plan to buy soon and I only fly helicopters. I use buttkickers too.
@RomanDesignCanada
@RomanDesignCanada Месяц назад
Not sure what you mean by cogging. I was smooth and nice, if a bit violent sometimes, but it's my flying :-) I haven't noticed any problems.
@demdirtyboyz247
@demdirtyboyz247 Месяц назад
@@RomanDesignCanada Good to hear, "Cogging" is an known issue DOF is trying to fix with slight banking or gradual turns in GA. It's a small stepping feeling rather than a smooth motion. It's the only reason I haven't purchased an H3 or H6 yet. They stated they would be testing a new gearbox this past weekend at Flightsim Expo in Las Vegas. SFU upgrades have reduced this greatly. Since I mainly fly helos, I was interested to see how you felt it was with Helos over all. I was also told if you use bass shakers or buttkickers this masks the feeling greatly.

@@demdirtyboyz247 I see. Well, I think that the fact that my rig is made of wood plays to the advantage here. It's not 100% rigid, both in terms of frame and also there is a bit of play in the system. When I wiggle the top of the seat with my hand, it can move about 3cm, because between the U-joint, motor arms, and motor gearboxes, and the frame itself it's not absolutely rigid. I read some medal fames could be to jarring or clunky - not in my case. It can do rapid movements that I feel like I'm going to be thrown out of the chair, and some very fine movements too, but it feels natural. I have absolutely no sign of the "cogging". I feel no steps at all, all movements are 100% smooth, small or large.
@demdirtyboyz247
@demdirtyboyz247 29 дней назад
@@RomanDesignCanada Thank you for this reply. Sounds like it may not be an issue with Helicopters then, our movements might be little better than ab1 or 2 degree bank of a GA
@RomanDesignCanada
@RomanDesignCanada 29 дней назад
@@demdirtyboyz247 I had no issues with GA, airliners and helis. Helis have more motion which makes it more difficult and more fun at the same time. I also did some car racing with very abrupt motion, both rally and circuit, and the rig is fully capable of that too.

A real helicopter is difficult to fly in real life, and that being said practice is necessary and it becomes easier as time goes on.
