Ever wondered how to start a helicopter? This is an unedited run-through of startup procedures for my 1978 Enstrom 280C helicopter. It is powered by a turbocharged, horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder Lycoming engine. The point of departure is Long Beach (KLGB) airport in California enroute to (L45) in Bakersfield.

Awesome video, when I was 18 (52 years ago) for a short time I wanted to become a pilot. Before I started down that path I realized that I lacked the coordination flying takes. That did not bother me and I went down another path in life and am very happy about that. I still have the greatest admiration for those who fly. Thanks for sharing your experience

Used to take an R44 (not the same, I know) for my work commute up on a glacier during the summer here in Alaska and always wondered about the start up. Tried to get the pilot to walk me through it like you've done, but never happened. Thanks for the great video. You've sated my curiosity of the general run through and piqued my curiosity to learn.

I was a Crew Chief on several Fighter Aircraft but most of my years were on F-15's. I was Max Engine Run Qualified and spent many, MANY hours sitting in the cockpit running engines for various maintenance issues. Great in the summer for AC and great in the winter for heat. Point is I had to go through these checklist for starting and running the engines. Pretty important stuff...especially for emergencies. Of which we had quite a few!

Great vid, in 06 i was two weeks away from ground school orientation for an Atlanta flight school when i had a massive vertigo attack, had another 2 days later and went to get looked at after a few more doctor visits and i was diagnosed with meneries, an incurable vestibular disease that causes dizziness vertigo and hearing loss, which makes me not allowed to hold a pilots license of any kind, so my aviation career was killed right before it began, vids like this let me see what might of been had i not come down with this disorder

This is the perfect helicopter instruction video. He literally answered all of my questions about helicopters. For example, I use to think helicopters were unsafe due to if the engine fails, I thought they just dropped from the sky. Well, according to the info of this pilot they do not, you can actually glide them to safety. Well done. Very nice video.

Just at the beginning. After doing it many times, I am sure it will be easy for you. I know because, after working on the Air Force F-16 for 20 years, all the controls and indicators make things look so complicated the first time. I used to start the jet for engine runs after we installed the engine and shut it down after the maintenance checks were done. Sometimes secured the jet and do an afterburner run. No checklist for the emergency procedures and power settings. Bad things happen quick and you don't have time to flip pages. Technical book procedures, power settings and indicators are all memorized and you will be tested on a simulator after few months to stay certified. You better pass or you will be in uniform in front of an officer explaining why you didn't pass in some cases....no pressure. Let the control tower and maintenance operations know where you at and your intentions before starting that jet, otherwise you will be surrounded by the military police aiming their weapons at you.

Micah Muzio - you did a great job of explaining the Startup/Takeoff procedures. Could you suggest the best way to start toward becoming a helicopter pilot? Would you say there are plenty of employment opportunities in this field? Thank you!
@MicahMuzio
@MicahMuzio 5 лет назад
Sean Simpson Step 1. Go to the nearest helicopter flight school and take an introductory lesson. That’ll give you a sense of whether flying choppers is something you’d want to make your career. If the answer is yes, then you’ll need to earn your private and commercial helicopter licenses. After that, the most common path is to earn your certified flight instructor card. As a flight instructor you’ll make very little money but you’ll build experience. My understanding is that once you’ve accrued 1,000 hours of flight the job market starts to open up. Speaking of, while I am a commercial pilot I don’t fly for a living. It’s simply a passion for me. So I can’t really speak to employment opportunities. That said, there’s a lot of talk about pilot shortages. So, the market for pilots could be strong but the path to becoming an employable pilot will take commitment and investment.

Nice video... I've always liked the Enstrom 280. What do you figure your hard operating costs are? I received my Rotorcraft Private over 25 years ago. Been in a 530F. Lots of fun. Find myself using it mostly to go golfing due to the +$650 an hour operating costs. If I need to actually get anywhere I strap on an AeroStar 700. Considering going down to an Enstrom. Your bird looks to have been well taken care of. Also, why do you fly 500AGL? I'm usually hanging around at 300AGL.
@MicahMuzio
@MicahMuzio 7 лет назад
Well, I've spent a fair bit sorting out the kinds of maintenance issues that accumulate with a nearly 40 year old helicopter. But with most of that finally sorted the big costs are insurance and fuel. Given your flight experience insurance should be fairly cheap. As for fuel she burns about 15 gallons per hour. Figure $100/hour depending on the price of av gas in your neighborhood. The bigger question is how you'll feel stepping down from a 530F. The Enstrom likes to cruise at 90-100 mph. Assuming the comparative lack of speed doesn't bother you it's a great ship for flying solo or with one passenger. FYI, I've never actually flow one but I've always dreamed of owning a 500 of some sort. Blame Magnum P.I. Oh, and I like 500AGL because it gives me more emergency options when flying around densely populated Los Angeles. That said, I'm comfortable flying lower when I'm out in the boonies. Cheers!

I thought that in a helicopter the pilot flies it from the right seat.
@MicahMuzio
@MicahMuzio 7 лет назад
Because the collective lever always sits to the pilot's left helicopters with a single bench seat sometimes have the pilot sit on the left side. That's the case with my Enstrom. When I trained in Robinsons pilot in command sat on the right.

JayWhy Duplessis depends on the Helicopter, but you are some what right in assuming PIC is right hand side. That's thanks to the pioneer of helicopters Sikorsky.

the Hughes 500/MD500 series of Helicopters are also piloted from left.

how much does it cost to learn how to fly a helicopter? and how manny days or months does it takes to master it?
@MicahMuzio
@MicahMuzio 6 лет назад
It might've changed in the 9 years since I got my license but $10-15k is a rough estimate. As for mastering it, I'm still working on that. And probably always will be. That said, I flew my first solo after around 20 hours of flight instruction.
@jaysanity6551

Micah Muzio oh, wow! but is the $15k money just for one session or is that for the whole 20hrs training?

Jay Sanity That would be for everything including ground school and instruction in the aircraft.

That would be about £40,000 here in the UK because we get ripped off for everything including our fuel!

Awesome. Just awesome. I've only taken one helicopter flight and it was a jet helicopter to a fishing camp in Northern BC. I loved your breakdown of how everything was being performed and why. Very good.
