It's been 7 months since I've done one of these update videos, and I've had a few requests for one, so I figured it was time. Consider this my Xmas present to all of you after posting relatively little train content recently.
It's been a hectic holiday season at work, and I've been deep into R/C stuff recently, so I haven't had much time to make train videos. However, I have some cool projects lined up for the new year, so stay tuned!
I spent about an hour re-creating the sound from that Back to the Future scene using public-domain sound effects to avoid a copyright claim (and also to make the music transition seamlessly into the guitar note). Hope it was worth it. The amount of effort I will go to for a brief Back to the Future joke is frankly concerning.
Speaking of music, you may notice some fresh background music in this video that isn't from the RU-vid Audio Library. I'm doing a free trial of Epidemic Sound, a subscription service for high-quality royalty-free music, to see if I like it. So far it's pretty good, but I'm not sure yet whether I'm going to continue with a full subscription.

I bought three IHC Mehanos around 1997. Two moguls and an 4 4 0 with the same frame as the moguls, one driver removed, but covered by the pilot truck. About 40 to 50 dollars new in a shop in Pensacola. They all ran flawlessly and didn't need rework or wiper pickups. They all matched each other in speed. My guess is those resold have been stored badly or abused by trainset users instead of benckwork layout modellers.

A good video regarding that spray booth would be nice; I just got into spray painting with a air brush and I really joyed your video regarding such.

@michaelramsey81 10 месяцев назад
Thanks! I didn't make a video on the booth because there are already several in-depth reviews of it on RU-vid. Although mine was Paasche branded, it's identical to a commonly available unbranded model, which Barbatos Rex (an excellent channel that primarily covers model painting) did a full review on. In fact, it was that video that led me to buy mine. The video is called "Testing Amazon's Cheapest Spray Booth For Airbrushing".

Mehano produced the steam locomotives for IHC and they are still very much in business. If you need parts, I'd recommend checking with them.
@michaelramsey81
@michaelramsey81 2 года назад
Do they still make parts for the older IHC steamers? I tried to look them up a while back, but their site seems to mostly list European trains now.

Walmart has a nice selection of metalflake acrylic . Apple Barn brand $.50 - $2.00 per 2 Oz.
@michaelramsey81
@michaelramsey81 2 года назад
I've tried similar ones from Michaels. There are some nice colors, but it's really hard to get a good dark metallic red. Most acrylic metallic reds are very light, and adding black to darken them also reduces the color saturation. The only reliable way I've found to get that rich, deep candy red finish is with Tamiya TS lacquer spray cans (either Clear Red or Pure Metallic Red over silver or gunmetal).

In the kitbashing section of the Bachmann parts store, they have a full 4-4-0 chassis and tender chassis for sale. I figured you might be interested because you have an extra shell and tender running around now
@michaelramsey81
@michaelramsey81 2 года назад
Definitely tempting! Not sure I need two 4-4-0s though. I have plans to use the spare shell for a 2-8-0 kitbash at some point.

We're those coaches from the red oak railroad? Also one thing I thought that may be neat would be if you made a red oak railroad boxcar and weathered it to look old almost as a memory from a previous railroad that's now gone

I've got a question for you: I am designing a 5'x9' layout comprised of a 4'x8' section, a 1'x8' section, and a 1'x5' section all bolted together (in case you are wondering, the 4'x8' is already pre-built. I got it from a friend). My question is: how would you lay the track (tangent as well curves) and build the scenery (hills, valleys, etc...) so as to make easy to disassemble it, move it up the stairs, and reassemble it at a later date. Is terminating the subroadbed, cork roadbed, and track at two benchwork joints an acceptable solution? All the information that I have seen so far seem to recommend that it is not a wise idea to align track and roadbed joints with benchwork joints, and that it is better to overlap them. How would you do it, especially on grades?
@michaelramsey81
@michaelramsey81 2 года назад
It is usually better to overlap the joints, but it's not strictly necessary, and if the layout has to split into pieces, sometimes that just isn't an option. What I did on the W&SC was cut the rail at the edge of each section, and remove a few ties on both sides so I have room to slide a rail joiner onto the rail before connecting the layout sections. Then, once the sections are together, I can slide the joiner over the rail gap, and it keeps the rails perfectly aligned. Some tracks cross the gaps at angles and even on curves, and it works just fine. You can see it at about 6:49 in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yfOS0kjmjB8.html

Probably not, only because engines that long don't tend to do too well on 18" radius curves. If they made an Atlantic, I'd definitely consider that, but I doubt they will.
