In fact, you have a better chance at surviving in a helicopter when the engine fails than you do in an airplane. Helicopters are designed specifically to allow pilots to have a reasonable chance of landing them safely in the case where the engine stops working during flight, often with no damage at all. They accomplish this via autorotation of the main rotor blades.

+Stan Albatross +Stipan Lisica He didn't explain it fully imo. He did mention most of how it works but. A video wouldn't help you at all because what you do is basically a completely normal landing. I have been in a helicopter with an instructor and asked him to do an autorotation landing. He throttle down to idle and we just slowly glide down towards the ground. While you glide down you build up rotation momentum in the rotorblades. Just like if you hold a fan up and swing it through the air without it being powered it will start spinning. When we get close like a couple meters (1 meter = ~3 foot) above ground he would just pull the collective pitch up using the built up rotation to slow down and make a soft landing. If this was video'ed from the outside it would just look like a normal landing.

@paullangford8179
@paullangford8179 7 лет назад
Reduces engine rpm to rotor rpm. The bearings for the output shaft take the entire weight of the helicopter. Failure of the gearbox loses drive, and so long as the pilot is quick, the rotor can be configured like an autogyro, and the hekicopter can be converted to a glider. Failure of the support bearings or any part of the suspension system of the rotor is regarded as a significant probem, unless the (small) helicopter has a ballistic 'chute system, because it is usually followed by and immediate splatdown..

The premise that helicopters are safer than airplanes during an engine failure is false. While it's true that helicopters can autorotate, they can only do so in a very fine window while flying above a certain altitude and going over a certain speed. Get an engine failure while hovering, flying slow or flying low and you will not be able to autorotate. Also the reaction time for initiating autorotation is very low in the best of cases. It's one thing doing autorotations while practicing engine failures (and expecting it) and completely another reacting to the unexpected event in less than ideal conditions. Statistics on crashes and successful autorotations tell a different tale than your video.
@jjcoola998
@jjcoola998 2 года назад
You never hear about close calls with helicopters but you see a lot with planes 🤔
@sydneyshuman1077
@sydneyshuman1077 2 года назад
Totally agree Riccardo! The guy in the video was trying to use one piece of data to make an overall assumption about whether a helicopter or airplane is safer. The answer is much more complex than just looking at engine failures, like you were saying. Before watching this video, I was researching whether helicopters or airplanes were safer. Turns out, both are extremely safe. Apparently airplanes and helicopters are safer to use for transportation than car travel. Statistically, driving your car through a parking lot is more risky than riding in an airplane or helicopter. When looking at all the data between airplane and helicopter safeness, airplanes are considered safer.

This was (is) reasonably accurate, I was a crew chief on a UH-1N I the Air Force and a lot of factors play into how smoothly an auto-rotation landing is accomplished, starting with how well the pilot is trained, weight on board, altitude at engine failure, forward airspeed and badly everyone on board just shit their pants.

My father was an officer for the VNAF during the Vietnam war. When I was a kid my favourite pastime was listening to his war stories, it is something that taught me deep respect for veterans. My favourite story was his time learning to fly the Hueys delivering soldiers to the frontlines. Once I asked him what happens when the engine dies midflight, and he responded that it is the most difficult test for a helicopter pilot. I don't remember all the details, but he went through the procedure of landing the vehicle safety and saving everyone on board. One of my favourite memories that I hadn't thought of in many years.

I was a helicopter power train repairman in the army. I had a hard time understanding a high energy rotor system, one of our test pilots started an OH-58 helicopter throttled up to flight rpm let it stabilize throttled down to ground idle pulled up the collective lifted up the aircraft spun it 360 degrees and set it down with only the energy stored in the rotor. I have been in helicopters many times that auto-rotated.

Hovering steady is pretty damn hard to do when your first learning. It's extremely easy to over correct on a little mistake and you end up swinging around all over the place. Actually flying a helicopter once in the air and moving is pretty easy.
@starexcelsior
@starexcelsior 7 лет назад
What do you mean. Airplane engine failure/ crashes are way more survivable than helicopter crashes
@ethancole9618
@ethancole9618 7 лет назад
Nope. Let me explain this quickly. Planes have to glide when crash landing. Meaning they need a long stretch of open and flat ground to land on. Helicopters are far more agile, smaller and they can still move around a lot while descending. They are able to find very small spots to land with little problem. So basically a heli can land on a small street next to your house while a plane would need a very large highway. Plane=large flat area to land and cant maneuver much. Heli= small agile and can land pretty much anywhere. Also one thing I forgot to mention... When crash landing in a plane, you are going much faster then you would be then while flying a heli. That is the main reason it is safer to be in the heli
@starexcelsior
@starexcelsior 7 лет назад
Ethan Cole but that's why airliners have more than one engine. Plus a lot of small planes can land in 50 feet. The ability to glide gives the plane a chance to reach an airport where rescue is immediate. Also planes are way safer than helicopters. You are way more likely to survive a crash in a plane than a helicopter
@ethancole9618
@ethancole9618 7 лет назад
Star Excelsior thing is. the helicopter does not need to reach the airport. Yes the plane may have 2 engines, but in the crash landing senario all engines could be dead.
@musicbruv
@musicbruv 7 лет назад
Helicopters can glide, I have heard that some have a better glide slope than fixed wing, the point is a fixed wing must maintain forward air speed in order to touch down safely. A Cessna 150 touches down at about 60 MPH where as a helicopter could touch down at 0 MPH.
@Debbiebabe69
@Debbiebabe69 7 лет назад
I think he means, an aeroplane total engine failure almost always results in a crash landing. A plane can only perform an unpowered landing if there is a suitiable place to land, ie if you are close to a runway. A helicopter engine failure can be easily turned into an unpowered landing as opposed to a crash. Yes plane *crashes* are more survivable than chopper crashes (which have a close to 100% pilot kill rate) but if 100 planes and 100 choppers experience total engine failure at cruising altitude, 99 of the planes but only 1 of the choppers will crash.

They're connected. The main rotor, when it's in a state of auto-rotation, provides power to the tail rotor through the transmission system.

Wrong, since the main rotor will be free wheeling then there is no torque forces trying to twist the helicopter about it's axis.

helicopter will start to rotate due to torque that motor produces. that is why you have to shut down motor if rear rotor stops working (it is mentioned in video).

SW6, Semi-wrong. It will rotate the other way, because of the DRAG that the blades have against the air, and especially if there is some gearbox problem where the blades aren't disengaged or the gearbox seizes.

thinking about it already is a thing when your helicopter dies mid-flight if you notice the rotor blades still move when the engine is not working. so surprisingly they put the physic in place for such things to happen. and if you pull up on the yoke when this occurs the helicopter travels further.

The time the pilot has to react to the engine failure, although trained, is what makes helicopters drop like a rock. I've known experienced helicopter pilots die, because they simply weren't quick enough. Dependent on the model, this time is a matter of seconds. In the air, when you get an engine failure, your immediate reaction is what's happened, concluded it's an engine failure, possibly why has the engine failed and can I restart it, and/or, act upon it. By the time that has gone through your mind, you are too late. No, it is not more likely you survive an engine failure in a helicopter than in a plane. The plane will fly without the pilot doing anything. For an example, in the very common Robinson Beta R22, you have only 1.6 seconds to react. Count it out loud and see how quick that is and how when surprised by an unexpected scenario like the engine failure this time will be hard to beat even for experienced pilots
@PlutoProtogen

thats why they usually hold onto the collective when they fly helicopters..and msot of the time, there are warnign signs that something is about to go wrong such as alarms going off or a spike in oil pressure/temp or something like that
@mattwoolford
@mattwoolford 7 лет назад
Austin Wright you cannot always be holding on to the collective. It's unrealistic. You need to note things down for example when ATC gives you a long clearance. Worse, if you're an instructor you're going to have papers to manage and your student won't know how to handle the incident.
@PlutoProtogen
@PlutoProtogen 7 лет назад
Matt Woolford im well aware of that, but most of the time you usually have a co pilot, but engine failures are rare so long as the engine is properly maintained, i would honestly rather be in an helicopter when the engine quits than a plane, since most planes dont glide too well and some really will drop like a rock, sure most plane crashes can be survived but the issue is, finding a place to land..but due to proper maintenance you have no real need to worry about either crashing, and ive seen more people walk away uninjured from helicopter crashes even at low altitudes, though i dont keep track of the stats..
@mattwoolford
@mattwoolford 7 лет назад
Austin Wright not true at all. Unless you are in an F18 where it takes 20 or so computers to keep it airborne, any commercial jet is designed to be able to fly on one engine even if the performance is reduced. For those with single engines, gliding is often very easy to achieve. Even if a plane was not capable of such a feat as flying in a single engine (which they are), or in the case of dual/quad-engine failure, the pilot would still be able to glide it well. If the pilot was not able to glide it well for whatever reason (which in itself would have to be an achievement) the plane would descend at a fast, but not severe rate of descent, gain lift from the airflow over the wings and actually ascend rather than descend before it loses lift and begins descending again and so on. There is a lot of time for a pilot to react, a pilot can react more safely because even autorotation in a helicopter puts you down 10 times harder than a normal landing where gliding a relatively normal, possibly slightly hard landing would be achieved depending on how well you handle the descent. An amateur would still be able to land it well on flat grass. Planes naturally by build want to fly whilst helicopters force their way into the sky by brute-engine-force. :)
@PlutoProtogen
@PlutoProtogen 7 лет назад
i know how airplanes work while gliding, it isnt too hard but you have alot of drag unless you feather the propeller, and an airliner if it loses an engine on climb, theres a high chance it will struggle to get back to safety due to the weight, but in cruise it isnt as bad, but losing both engines they will be forced to land and there arent too many places for a tubeliner to land, a small cessna possibly, but you have to remember a small hill can be the end of the aircraft as it hits the ground it will slide, the gear are more likely to collapse in a landing and if thats the case, you better hold on..if a 4 engine airliner loses 2 engines she wont have the ability to stay up and will not always have the power to climb, if it loses any more than that it is going down for sure but on a propeller driven aircraft, just pull the rpm lever or flip the switches or press the buttons to feather the props and you will be able to glide decently, but you dont glide that well...so in a way yes you drop out of the sky, you put your nose down and even then if you make one mistake your shit outta luck because you cant gain airspeed without losing altitude

@sebbychou
@sebbychou 7 лет назад
They can glide far... in a straight line. It's incredibly touchy to do a landing maneuver since the slightest mistake will make you permanently lose control and you'll probably need to land at much higher speeds, which might be enough to overshoot or obliterate the plane even on an otherwise successful landing. Unlike the chopper, the plane will need to maneuver onto a landing strip.

I know videogames don't translate to real life but... I use that kind of landing a lot in GTA: Vice City. I mean is the same, you point the nose down and you start falling quickly and then you point it up to get a flawless landing. I guess is the same I mean I stop "accelerating" so is the same as having the motor shut down. Looks like Rockstar Games got their helicopter physics just right.

Great video! If someone knows what an autogyro is, they would better understand that a helicopter can "glide" so to speak. The autogyro (autogiro) was essentially a plane with rotors that would spin and produce lift with forward motion. They were developed pretty early in the age of flight.

So you're hovering at 20 feet and lose tail rotor , you just roll on ? lol or reduce the engine (s) to idle to off load the torque from the ( anti torque rotor ) and use intertial forces of the blades to cushion the landing.. hmm.. You should study those EP's

My friends.......i don't know how to tell you this but usually when a helicopter fails, the blades usually disintegrate long before you hit the ground and by that time you are sitting in a flying brick. The blades almost always fail hence the reason why the fatalities are in the 90% region when it comes to the mighty copters. Trust me, bricks don't float. If you don't believe me then just do this experiment for me: get a friend to go on the rooftop of a building (preferably a very tall building) and you stand on the ground and let your friend drop the brick. IF the brick floats then i'm wrong but if the brick continues to drop and knocks you unconscious (or dead) then you my friend have won a darwin award courtesy of stupid youtube videos like this. Bricks don't fly in the world of gravity.

I've known for years, ever since I was a wee little lad and got myself involved with model aeronautics, more notably 3D helos. However, I can see why people would seem to think that helicopters are incapable of landing like this. How a helicopter really works seems to elude people, and most I've talked to seem to just assume they fly kind of like airplanes that can stop on a dime and hover in place. There's much more to a helo than that. Hell, 99% of the people I've had conversations with don't even know what collective pitch is or even have a faint idea of how it works!

When helicopters spin on decent, it's either because the tail rotor has failed, and can no longer provide counter-torque to combat the torque of the main rotor, which can be negated through auto-rotation (I believe), or because the main rotor loses power, and the tail rotor starts spinning the helicopter with the lack of the main rotor's torque. In that case, the power is cut from the tail rotor to stop that from happening, if it's still getting power at all. For all I know, when when the main rotor loses power, the tail rotor does too. Note, I'm not a helicopter pilot, so this is mainly research and speculation, but logic states that helicopters don't just spin spontaneously as they go down.

Look, Kobe's pilot didn't have engine failure, was not in an autorotation event... he wasn't even ATTEMPTING to land, it's irrelevant to this video.. He smacked it into the ground at -4000 ft/S vertical velocity, and this was after rapidly gaining altitude, radar and atc confirm this. The pilot was likely disoriented, happens, especially so in a helicopter, the end, sorry. Also, helicopters are quite safe, mile-per-mile, especially against a car, thanks to things precisely like autorotation. Many many many times more likely to die driving mile-to-mile compared to a helicopter. I'd rather be piloting a helicopter than a plane with a loss of power anyday... Sure, the plane glides, but you are ultimately still setting it down somewhere that won't be pretty unless you're conveniently near an airstrip, and then there's the issue of stopping. Whereas the helo, by design and nature can land just about anywhere decent with the ability to quickly cut forward momentum; that's the difference.
