Designed by Buford John “B.J.” Schramm, the Helicycle was the end result of a mission to provide the average person with an inexpensive-to-build-and-operate, single-seat flyer that offered a higher degree of performance and safety than what was then available on the market. After purchasing his own Helicycle in 2008, Keith Southard, EAA 668985, fell in love with the aircraft and saw great potential for future design improvements. In 2019, Keith took over the company and is now seeing his vision come to life.

It's a helicopter that feels like a helicopter. WTF!!! It's a helicopter. How's it not gonna feel like a helicopter
@PropaneTreeFiddy
@PropaneTreeFiddy 2 года назад
My guess as to why they avoid outright calling it a helicopter is due to type classifications as this is likely meant to be registered as an experimental aircraft.

@Propane TreeFiddy ok, it's an experimental helicopter. It's still a helicopter. An ultralite is still an airplane no matter how small you make it. Still, it was weird.

there's only a few designs on operation so many people are shocked such a thing exists. The builders just want to assure the public it really is a helicopter

Anyone have any idea of how many documented engine failures and forced landings on the Hellicycles? I know they autorotate better than an R22....anyone know how they'd compare to a Hughes 300 or Enstrom?
@gulfair-cavalry-tango1011
@gulfair-cavalry-tango1011 2 года назад
Mine has 1340 Hobbs hours TTAF without engine failure necessity of unplanned autorotation. From 3000' msl it glides 4+NM during autorotation. 1NM+\750'altitude, that is twice the published glide ratio of the beloved R22.

Helicycles had lot's of engine failures and manufacturing defects in the 90's and 2005, from machines made more than 2012, they're very very perfect, helicycle was the first helicopter I built in now I work for MD Helicopters

@@aileronhelicopters But the engines used in Helicycles have always been he same Solar Turbines...why are there less engine failures now?

@@aileronhelicopters This is quite vague. NTSB accident reports would make credibility.

I would love to have one of these tiny Helicycles!!! "It looks & feels like a helicopter. . . . .!" UHHHHHHHH. . . . . .That's because IT IS A HELICOPTER!!! Cant stand it when people call helicopters "ship"! Thats like calling them a cuss word!

if it looks good it flies good! Why are we still using analog gauges though? Seems like you could free up a lot of visibility and make things more easy to read reducing the size of that front panel.

13gal/hr for 100hp? All the weight you save with the turbine you lose in having to carry all that fuel.
@codmott286
@codmott286 2 года назад
true, but there are no reliable pistons to carry a small helicopter like this, you need the power/reliability of a turbine

That's true, but it's still the least expensive turbine helicopter time builder.

I wonder if you could put a smaller turbine or a rotax or any comparable spec non turbine engine in it. That'd be interesting to see.. Seeing that they had to down tune the turbine (although the engine is a decent choice) mabey they can get away with less SHP and get better economy. Mabey keep that T62 for the top range model only and offer smaller engines. ALSO I don't know what a Helicycle is.. a Cycle is usually something you ride upon and or pedal....this is an Ultralight Helocopter, Ain't nobody telling me otherwise.
@thatguy7085

Yes, I’ve seen them with small turbines.

Wait… this one has a small turbine.
@codmott286

Small turbines are hard to come by. The T62 model is one of the only mass produced models available to the general public.

I believe the prototype originally had a piston engine
@gulfair-cavalry-tango1011
@gulfair-cavalry-tango1011 2 года назад
The turbine was down-tuned to increase the predicted TBO to 2000 Hobbs hours. It weighs 85 pounds and produces more power per pound down-tuned to 95hp than could be weight-to-power-ratio obtained from any piston banger. ... A cycle is a revolving phenomenon.
