Hell for Russian military aviation: Sweden gave to Ukraine ASC-890 radar aircraft

The radar aircraft provided to Ukraine by Sweden will give completely new opportunities for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.It monitors airspace over a greater range than radar ground stations limited to the horizon. Above the sea surface, the ASC-890 radar aircraft can detect and track fighter jets, hovering helicopters, cruise missiles and even sea targets the size of jet skis.

Russia is able to out produce in terms of artillery shells and manpower. However that being said with the EU and US ramping up their production of aid to Ukraine, Russia will likely by mid 2025 or early 2026 be far behind. Sad truth that democracies are so slow to react to threats.

@@mikkel066h It is really about all in the west thinking the arms race was long over, so production facilities all over was not only shut down but scrapped. There fore bringing production back takes rebuilding factories and it is about the whole supply chain, since there wasn't much use for what goes into grenades on the high streets. In contrast Russia had a long build up to the war and many facilities taken over from the USSR times, just like they had huge numbers of tanks, artillery pieces...

Those aircraft will also be prime targets for the Russians, so lets hope that not only will the draw a lot of effort from the Russians relieving pressure from elsewhere, but also that the Russians will be unsuccessful in getting to them.

@@bzdtempsure, but they can see incoming threats, so they have time to react. It is not like Russians have lasers to shoot it down. Anything they throw at it will be from 300+ km away, giving ample time for countermeasures.

@@johns70 That is true. But still they will also likely be targeted while on the ground, where of course the "easy" move for safety is to get airborne when there is incoming. The Ukrainians have demonstrated they are clever in what they do, hopefully they will be able to keep these new birds operating so they can take advantage of them.

@@johns70 Yeah, but these aircraft are more vulnerable than classical fighters despite operating at longer distances, at least to enemy air assets. They are slow and not very nimble. It will be very important to respect zones where russians aircraft can get weapon locks

@@johanhagner2341 well, the Russians will fire upon the radar signal that they send out, and aim to let the missiles get a lock. But from 300km out, even if they lock on to the signal, the ASC890 can just shut it off when they see the incoming missiles, and turn. Even if they are slow, they can travel several tens of kilometers in the minutes it takes for the missiles to travel all the way towards where they were when the lock happened.

Sounded like Sweden would give all it's 650 pieces of PBV 302 as well. It was in service until 2014, should have better terrain ability then tanks so can work better during winter. As well as ambfibious

They are giving 2 not 1. Also they are sending every armored carriers they have left in stock, it's about 239. 500 was made but they will send every functional there is left or they could fix.

PBV 302 is old but seems to be amphibious, even if it's slow in water. So there will be no need for a bridge. Could maybe be used to strengthen some of the area around the Dnipro river. But most likely it will mainly be used for medical transportation, rescuing other vehicles that gets stuck or damage and instead of using a normal 4x4 car.

As a Swede I wished we could give more, and hopefully we can in the short future... Hopefully this will help some though! The JAS-39 Gripen planes will be sent I think soon... I do agree that two different types of planes could be a mess, when Ukraine is comfortable with the F-16's and it's capabilities I think Sweden can add more later on. JAS-39 Gripen is a true multirole aircraft, so if there is anything F-16's is missing, the JAS-39 Gripen can be configured to support the F-16's.

The Swedish government website clearly states two ASC 890 aircraft will be donated. Sweden has 2 Globaleye on order and now orders a third for itself, this is probably where the confusion of numbers come from.

As a Swede myself I think we need to do much more, giving Ukraine equipment is good for us too. Some say we need the military equipment ourselves but that's if we would be attacked, versus Ukraine that actually is under attack right now. Sweden is a part of Nato now, that's our safety that Ukraine doesn't have.

Yes, the SAAB AWACS has NATO Link16 and can feed F-16s real time radar info. The F-16s can basically fly with their radar turned off and shoot anyway based off of the AWACS data. The AWACS will then lead the missiles towards the target, until they get about 1/2-2/3 of the way there. Then the missiles will turn its own radar on for a close lock and BOOM.

Distance. AWACS can see incoming threats from far away, giving ample time for countermeasures. Also, it has flares and chaff, just like a fighter jet. And it can guide a counter-missile towards the incoming threat. So if Patriot is close, or F-16s are in the air, they can shoot the threat down based on the AWACS real time data.

Can F16s help Ukraine? Yes! Will F16s help? I don't know. We've asked 20 year old men, that have never flown, to become masters of the F16 in about a year. If the F16s fail, it's because we failed the pilots. We haven't given our best. And what's the quote? "If a man gives you his best, what more can you ask him to give?" We'll we can give so much more, and we should!

Its going to take several years to get those Gripen fighter jets, Sweden simply does not have enough to give more than 6 or 7 to Ukraine now, the rest will have to be manufactured, Ukraine could speed that up dramatically by manufacturing them in Ukraine as well as Sweden, similar to what Poland is doing with its tank and fighter jet orders from South Korea.

Sweden has plenty of C and D versions of Gripen in store now when the E version is delivered to the SwAF. The idea was to send the older but still capable C and D fighters to Ukraine but that was stopped by the Americans that want to showcase the older F16 instead, go figure😮.

Sweden is ready to send some. However: the allies in NATO wanted Sweden to send ASC-890 *before* any Gripens, because of coordination logistics. And what is more prioritized: ASC-890 radar surveillance and many F16:s, or some 10 Gripens?

Sweden will keep 60 Gripen C's when the Gripen E's have been delivered, so they could give away around 30 planes.

@@rursus8354 A Gripen is worth more than 2 F-16 because of much higher availability. It needs only 2 trucks and 6 men on the ground. Of these 6 only 1 must be a qualified aviamechanic. And it can start from paved roads without them being vacuumed first.

@@farminky you are wrong . Let me be clear ; despite all the announcements made , Italy has sent around 30% of the total . The contribute to increase bullets production has been zero . Well only 5 countries out of 20 payed for the bullets . Most important the decision to send soldiers has to be taken with in the G7 and it won’t happen . But of course you are free to believe that Italy is sending money and weapons 😂😂😂😂 In Italy you can still buy the beluga vodka if you want to know . 😂😂😂😂
