Hell on Earth at Skid Row Homeless Encampment Downtown Los Angeles

Today it feels like Hell on Earth here on Skid Row. Some days are good and other days not good at the Homeless Encampment. Some cleaning up is now taking place in certain areas, but other streets are expanding with new tents and new homeless arriving here. Tents and tarps are easy to construct and are cheap so Free Rent is so tempting for the homeless. Camps are spreading to the south and to the east.

This is the result of a failure to address wage stagnation, housing as a spec investment vs a home, educational system that is severely lacking, lower life expectancy than our parents, the gutting of middle income jobs by corporations wanting to increase profits by cutting American jobs and building facilities overseas, lack of healthcare especially mental healthcare, so many contributing factors.

I am in total agreement with those that believe that the elderly, children, physically infirm and mentally ill should be treated humanely with shelter and support services. Struggling veterans need a helping hand too for their service and sacrifices. Homelessness does not necessarily equate to crime and addiction. Nor is it a reason for filth, thrash and destruction of others property. Expecting taxpayer's who have no part in creating the problem should not be enslaved to have the proceeds of their productive lives taken to be mishandled by City Officials who only know how to make the problem not only worse, but permanent. If one has a problem of noisy birds craping and throwing seed shells all over the patio the solution is to "Get Rid of the Damn Bird Feeder".

California is culpable for the problem that it facilitated. Frankly, I am not Pro-Life when it comes to the drug-hazed zombies and fentanyl OD is doing a good job of helping those that want to commit suicide to do so. Drug addiction is not a disease. Cancer, diabetes, MS, etc, are diseases and they are not self-inflicted. Yes, I have lost close family members to drugs and I am angry at the pain they have caused those that loved them dearly. The biggest part of this problem is the "rights" of the homeless population to be as crazy as they want to be. There are numerous laws that allow the mentally ill to refuse medication, help, treatment, any kind of therapy or medical interventions that will help them improve their lives. Crazy people don't think they're crazy, and since when should we allow mentally ill to make decisions for themselves that end in this kind of result? I've worked as a nurse for over 10 years and you should see the kind of legal hoops we have to jump through to FORCE these people to take care of themselves. I've seen judge's orders allowing people to refuse something that is in their best interest. Giving them housing and food isn't fixing anything.

Some people are unfortunately broken and no amount of work will fix them. In the past, they would have been supported by the taxpayers in mental institutions. The powers that be, closed them down and simply put these folks on the streets. It would appear that for many of the others, their lifestyle is one they have adjusted to well. I've yet to see people with children living on the street. Unless people want to change and resources to help are there in the numbers needed - - nothing is going to change.

Agreed, although I'd say it depends on your definition of "fixed". Many of these people will never be productive citizens (this is not meant as an insult to them but a testament to the chains of mental illness). What we CAN do is keep them safe from themselves and others AND provide an opportunity for community and a semblance of normalcy. When people cannot take care of themselves and pose a threat to others, they must be institutionalized, a term that desperately needs to be de-stigmatized. They need to be diagnosed, looked after and sheltered for their own safety because they cannot recognize this need on their own. This is the conundrum of severe mental illness: you cannot recognize your helplessness and therefore cannot see you need help and thus can't take care of yourself. The fact that politicians make the point of being "compassionate" while allowing them to persist in this state is utterly disgraceful. The idea of placing these people into houses and expecting them to stay housed is laughable and shows how out of touch the govt is. Real Compassion would actually be removing them from this helpless situation (by force if necessary because there's no chance at willingness without treatment).

This population is a different country. The answer is not just one thing. Drugs, alcohol, mental illness need to be addressed. It needs to be isolated and controlled, picked up, cleaned up and moved to a more suitable area. This area needs to be reclaimed like Venice. Homeless need to abide by the law like everyone else does. L.A. needs to set an example for the rest of the country. Other cities that put their homeless on buses to relocate them out of their area need to be levied with huge fines.. My shout goes out to the city workers that clean up after these people, the City should give them a huge salary to show their support.

The only way to solve the homeless problem is to return to making them unwelcome. When you don't allow them to camp on the sidewalk, they move to hidden areas. Mental health facilities are also needed to help those that can't help themselves. The people that truly want to live on the street will move on to easier places to live. Those who don't want to work and want to live on social welfare should be made to live in housing projects so they can be monitored.

My neighbor/ friend works with a health organization part-time on Skid Row. He estimated 90% of the people there are mentally ill. As for drugs, they're trying to self-medicate. The thing is, if you're not in your right mind, you don't realize how far you've sunk. You can't make those decisions for yourself. Our government has passed laws that won't allow us to forcibly make someone get help. Meanwhile, L.A. is turning into a sh*thole. And is an unsafe area for people to live. By not allowing people to go hungry, we're enabling them to stay this way. That's what is so cruel in this situation. Human nature is someone has to hit their rock bottom before they will seek help.
