Your psychiatrist fucked up. Mine had me take 25 mg for a week, then 50 for a week, then 75 to get me to the therapeutic dose of 100 mg. If you don’t do that you WILL get the rash. I found your video thinking in a search because I thought I might have it too, but I don’t. I hope you have found the right med combo for yourself. I was on Lithium for 20 years before trying Lamictal and I love that I don’t get acne with it. Having the right med combo is a game changer in the quality of life that you have, but it took 9 years to get mine close to being right, and 24 to be at the best place I have ever been. Stay strong and I love that you put your struggles out there to reduce the stigma that people have about mental health issues.

Thank you so much for your comment, Christine, and sharing your experience finding the right meds. While I haven’t been at it for as long, I can relate to it taking a LOOONG time. I’m currently taking 60 mg fluoxetine. I’m doing relatively okay on this and have been for a couple years now, but there’s always part of me that wonders if there’s an even better fit.

It's happening to me too, I'm having the lamictal rash (on day 5). My prescripbing doc told me about the risk of a rash and warned me about SJS. I was doing 25 mg perday for two weeks, and increasing slowly by doubling the dose every 2 weeks until I was at the prescribed dose of 100 mg per day. A little into week 7 (at 50 mg per day) I noticed the start of the rash after getting home from the gym. I'm a high anxiety person who saw the pictures of SJS, so I immediately messaged my doc low-key freaking out. She told me to stop taking the lamotrigine immediately and see a dermatologist ASAP. By the time I could get an appointment, ~90 of my body was covered in a red inflamed mess. It was on my face, my ears, my entire torso, and even down in my nether regions (not even Charmin could not prevent the irritation). Sleeping was the worst and the over the counter itch cream was laughably weak. Got to the derm and they examined the rash and thankfully didn't think it would develop into SJS. They also gave me a predisone shot right in the butt and luckily for me it sorta helped on the same day. Within 2 days of taking the oral predisone and using industrial strength itch cream (triamcinolone) the itching is becoming manageable. Thankfully, predisone and topical corticosteroids are my heroes. I still look like a feral ghoul, though. But at least this isn't SJS. I'm watching other people's experience on RU-vid and came across your video. Also what was troubling for me was my swollen and painful lymph nodes in my neck and head. Those started by the time I hit 50 mg a day. I think my body hated the lamotrigine from the start. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's helping me cope with this. When did your skin start to get better?

To avoid this rush it's necessary to increase the dose really slow and by adding not much mg. For example, 25 mg (2 weeks), 30 mg (2 weeks), etc

Update Dear PersonName Please stop the Lamotrigine and let’s see if the rash subsides and how long it takes to settle. We can then decide thereafter whether we plan to re-challenge with Epitec or not. It’s hard to know given chemo but I am concerned that this is 2° to Lamotrigine. Sincerely Dr Name

I've been taking Lamictal for quite a number of yrs. At first I thought I was gonna scratch my skin off. Besides the side effects, and being tapered on and off medication, I wouldn't wish this diagnosis on anyone. I don't have an illness that ppl can see, therefore they think I'm fine. Please, anyone who sees this- be kind. You never know what sort of demons others are up against.

I have recently been suffering from extreme mood shifts, and with each depression phase I feel I cannot make a right decision, even with small simple things, and also feel excess guilt about things that happen even to others ( that not related to me). And a lot of things had happened. Yet I have not been to psychiatrist. I have a question for anyone who took this medication. Does Lamictal cure the strange feeling of being indecisive and extreme guilt? And please excuse my English, it is not my mother tongue.
@youseemnormal
@youseemnormal Год назад
Hi Ivonka. The medication will work different for everyone. It could help with indecisiveness. I would encourage you to talk to a professional if you are able to! Also challenge thoughts on things that are the “right decision.” What makes it “right”? Could more than one be right?

My wife was on lamotrigine for 6 years to treat bipolar at doses of 200mg and 300mg. I also have a mother with acute schizophrenia. The standard line is that "it effects everyone differently". That is a bit like saying that alcohol "effects everyone differently". While there is some truth to it, overwhelming, the effects are pretty common. According to one of the lead researchers responsible for the approval of lamotrigine, Nassir Ghaemi, the primary mechanism of action is glutamate blocking. Glutamate is the most abundant excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, so blocking it's release typically has a somewhat sedating and calming effect. Whether or not this effect lasts is debatable, there is a theory first observed by Philip Seeman that a process called "supersensitivity" takes place and that the brain largely compensates for reductions in neurotransmitters overtime which can lead to the return of the original symptoms and possibly a worsening in the long run. When my wife first started taking the medication it was very relaxing, but over the course of about a year she developed akathisia, and after about three years the lamotrigine levels began to synchronize with her estradiol levels. We're weening off the medication at the moment and it is more horrific than anything the illness ever caused, or anything I have ever witnessed my mother experience, YMMV. My overall impression of lamotrigine is that it's a lot like benzodiazepine, it's very soothing and well tolerated while you are on it, but in the long run you may become dependant on it and any change in dose can cause very bad withdrawals. Case in point, here in Australia there was an issue with variations in dose quantities in generic lamotrigine, these tiny difference were enough to cause withdrawal effects in my wife that resolved on name brand Lamictal, the TGA here in Australia issued a warning regarding it directed at people with epilepsy. The best resource I have read on lamotrigine, is Nassir Ghaemi's Clinical Psychopharmacology: Principles and Practice. It is aimed at clinicians, but I think it provides some of the best information about lamotrigine from one of the world's leading experts. You're not going to want to hear this, but when my wife was very ill with mania and melancholia, hospitalised even, people would tell her to make lifestyle changes, reduce stress, change diet, exercise more. It used to make me very angry because my wife would often be told this in a hospital bed. I believed it was a biological illness and I still do. But through over a decade of experience I've come to realise that.. how can I put this... the treatments work, but they don't treat the disease, just the symptoms. There are very few true treatments for mental disease, so even though it's a real thing, if the treatments are not very good, sometimes it is better to practice "watchful waiting" under medical supervision and implement lifestyle changes even if it doesn't seem like the changes will have much of an effect. Medication is perhaps better used as a PRN in acute phases. That said the body has a remarkable ability to heal itself and I've been proven wrong, my wife has recovered substantially from a very severe illness with medication only playing a minor supporting role. Anyway, go and read Nassir's book, and work closely with your doctor.

my rash started about 10 days into my 50mg a day change, first 2 weeks were 25mg a day and perfect - then 10 days into 50MG a day i got rash :(, it was itchy right away no clue how hers was not itchy on day 1 of rash. rash seemed to favor skin on skin areas like under armpits and groin and buttox because i was sitting on it, and it appears at least my rash favored warm places with contact of something to make it even more itchy. it started 4 days after finishing a 5 day chemo regimen of Temodar. Persivate cream solved the very swollen itcy spots pretty fast - but i only have limited amounts left from prior doc visits.
