Imagine Zach and Chris making a cameo on Smiling Friends, even as background characters. Feel like it’d be a great nod to Adult Swim’s fuck up for not picking up Hellbenders
honestly as much as im sad they got rejected. honestly im glad hellbenders wasnt picked up. it gave them more time to grow and develop and i dont think that wouldve happened with hellbenders especially being made in the time it was made in.
@@rhettorical as was their right. When animators let the big studios walk all over them the studios will keep pushing the limits to see how much they can. It doesn’t seem right but it’s the nature of the beast.
I dont hate most modern animators I welcome the experimentation most have with their art styles but like God I miss actually smooth fluid animation like this which I don't see too much nowadays
@@Sassy_Witch They're probably thinking of animators that have 1 second long still frames of their animated self while they're talking, or something lol
1:15 For some reason there’s something about the way it’s just soft squeaking noises then all of a sudden something breaking loudly that always makes me crack up.
I mean, while it does suck the show didn't get aired, Zach and Chris kinda fucked up the interview by not taking it seriously enough. Plus mistaking the person doing the interview with a janitor didn't help.
Tsuna They both dicked around while waiting to pitch the show while sitting next to the interviewer. They also accidentally wore the hellbenders outfits (zack had an orange shirt and Chris was wearing a blue shirt). They mentioned it all on an episode of Sleepycast but I can’t remember what exact episode.
@@mvnkycheez its more than that, they said that as a joke for the podcast.... the real reason is because they signed a contract for a pilot episode, completed there side of the contract. but adult swim had another show with the word hell in the titles, then that show got cancelled so they had a chance but they choose mr pickels instead cause they thought it was the same
At 3:31 he says I hope you find it in your heart to forgive us, as he points to the right side of his chest instead of his left... it's the small things lmao
They apparently got a deal with a different provider but they didn't have enough money to publish the whole thing, so they lost rights to Hellbenders. I think they've stated somewhere before that maybe in the future if they're bored or something they'll come back to it.
It's fucking insane he was animating and writing at this level at like fucking 20. Generational talent I'm glad dude is finally getting his flowers and acknowledged in the mainstream
I watched this video the day it came out, and many times since, and Zach's face at 3:17 still gets me every time. His screams are fucking GOLDEN, as well. Love you Zach. Love you Chris. If I ever win the lottery or find myself on a large sum of money, you two are the first im going to contact for voicework for a project I've been planning for years, and plan to pay you, quite well.
Geoffrey Hershel Ay man, I got a project( well now two) I’ve been working on too, been working on this since the 6th grade. I got a lot of oc characters that could use some VA. Oh Zach and Chris are hella perfect for some cameos on a crossover ep I’m excited to make in the future 🤭 If you wanna work together, I’m down af🤝
I've watched this so many times since 2012 but today was the first time I noticed Zach's face change in the last frame before the credits. Truly a gift that keeps on giving.
I could never have imagined when I found this as a 13 year old, even imagining the detrimental impact this would still have on my personality and humor all these years later. I miss this age of the internet so much.
I have returned to this amazing animation to just congratulate Zach and Michael on getting Smiling Friends greenlit. It's well earned and hard worked. Great stuff boys
Yes!!! I second this!!! They deserved the recognition after all this time especially when Hellbenders failed to get the Greenlight.....dissappointingly...., but Smiling Friends has been amazing!!
1:14 me and my best friend used to walk like this as a inside joke all the time cuz we thought it was the funniest thing on the internet ever, miss those days
In the premiere for this episode, Zach Hadel, Chris O’Neal and Joshua Tomar were present. In the very beggining, the first thing Chris said was: “Look Tomar its you”
Coming back to this after watching Zach’s real show for Adult swim makes me both nostalgic for an earlier time in my life, and glad that he had “matured” by the time that smiling friends came around. The humor in this still hits (maybe not as much as when I was a kid) but the general “edgy and shocking is funny” vibe makes me realize just how far he’s come. He was still too green when he made this, and definitely still had an early internet “New-Grounds” mentality, and I think if this had gone on for an entire series, it wouldn’t be nearly as successful as Smiling Friends is. Zach has clearly had time to find himself however, and he grew up. The fact that I see so many comments here from people coming back to reminisce about when we thoroughly thought things couldn’t get funnier than Hellbenders. It’s an important part of his history, and I’m glad he isn’t ashamed of it like some creators might be. Zach in the end has a farcical sense of humor that he hasn’t compromised, but I think that it’s only fair to say that he’s merely grown as not just an individual but an artist. It was an important show of his talent at a younger age, and I think the animation still holds up today. It’s one of the few animations that I want to say is, in terms of technical quality, just as good as when I was a kid compared to now when I’m an adult. Even if the designs are a little crude or harder to market than the average dime a dozen PNG-Tuber or Storytime animator, I can tell how much love and care was put into this pilot. And honestly, it’s incredible that Zach made this at 19 (with Chris’s help of course.) I feel like videos like these shaped my humor. And while I don’t think I could ever see myself honing my talents to the level Chris and Zach did at their age (I’m 18 now and my art still seems to stink no matter the amount of effort) I think that Hellbenders has been something very dear to me, if distant (I was only 8 when it first came out and had no idea I was going to end up wanting to be an artist.) And in a way the sense of farcical humor, even present in Zach’s works before he made it big, have helped to develop me as a person and cope with my own faults through humor and charisma (I’m high-functioning autistic, attention deficits hyperactive, and I suffer from bi-polar) I would reason that if I had never had the chance to watch people like Spazdikinz, PsychicPebbles, OneyNG, Twisted Grim, Speedoru, or heaven forbid I say _Egoraptor_ that I would’ve never wanted to make art, or to pursue my talents. It’s almost funny to think that this really came out 10 years ago. A decade can be both a short time, and a long time. But looking at the way this animation and others like it influenced me as a person, I’m glad that it came out when it did. Hellbenders is a solid piece of animation, made by two very talented young men, who both in their own ways grew up to be successful, and honed their talents to a professional level. It’s funny to think that I’ll soon be around the age they were when they made this, and they’ll be around the age my father was when I was born. Hellbenders forever, never forget.
I'm a Hellbenders fan but I'm very happy about this, people have to accept that the cancellation of Hellbenders was a bit painful but this was the stumble that helped Zach not to walk so fast and see the ground little by little while walking (I don't I know if I made myself understood)
A group of elite, highly-trained exorcists, the Hellbenders live in a constant state of debauchery so they will be ready to go to Hell at any moment. When an infernal Norse demon called BLACK SURTR escapes into New York City intent on cracking open the gates of Hell, the Hellbenders must use every ounce of their debauchery to battle the demon and save the planet from eternal damnation!
Why hasn't Adult a Swim approached this guy to make Hellbenders a series? It would be the best thing they've aired since...wow, it's been way too long.
No I think its the rapes that happened on oz street who got raped again oh I think it Dorothy and some dumb dog and a sex doll they called scare crow i dk y
