Bringing the Flamethrower against the Automatons is a tall task due to its range limitations, but after consulting some of my earlier experiments, I realized that the solution to the Flamethrower’s range issues is the extensive use of Smokes. Smokes are criminally underutilized on the Automaton front, but their value as sightline disruptors is simply amazing as they allow you to easily sneak into entrenched positions without getting plugged full of laser bolts. Another positive of Smoke Stratagems are their relatively short cooldowns, which allow you throw them near constantly to disrupt Automaton movements while concealing your own.
Since the Flamethrower needs you to get up close and personal for max effectiveness, I decided to bring both the Eagle Smoke Strike and Orbital Smoke Strike, cycling between the two to give me the element of surprise whenever I engage a group of Automatons. To give myself some added survivability, I brought the Shield Generator Pack to give me some protection when fighting close quarters.
For dealing with longer-ranged chaff enemies, I brought the Cookout, which has amazing fire DOT damage that allows you to “fire” and forget once you set enemies on fire. The Cookout also has decent enough stagger to allow you to quickly slip away from enemies that get too close, allowing you to pull out the Flamethrower in a pinch. And to maximize my attack effectiveness when entering a smoked area, I bring the Stun Grenades to temporarily immobilize enemies and make them easy pickings with the Flamethrower. Lastly, I brought the Grenade Pistol for some longer ranged explosive damage and for the occasional Fabricator/vault.
Overall, I was really surprised by how well this build performed against the Automatons. The synergy between Smoke and Fire is incredibly powerful, and it’s definitely a dynamic pairing that I am eager to explore in future builds. If you’ve always dreamed of burning all the bots to a crisp, this is the build for you!
