It's my own personal take on it as I'm sure yours would be.. it moody certainly isnt any better or worse than anyone elses including yours my friend. Thank you very much Mark. That really means a lot. To be honest it tool some serious work. In many places its been painted up to seven times to create the effect and to create it so that its convincing requires you to paint every individual plank one by one so as not to create a colour that looks to uniformed. Yes the wood effects are lovely on this model, but at the beginning I didn't realise quite how much work was involved in creating a plastic model to convincingly appear as wood. A lot of time consuming work, but I think you'll agree it was worth it 😉👍👍👍

Hey thanks Walter. That really does mean a lot. I have to admit I'm pleased with the paintwork. It was a huge gamble at the beginning. When I decided to see if I could make a plastic kit appear as wood I didnt really know if it was going to work. It could have gone horribly wrong, but in the end the result was fantastic. Exceptionally time consuming as every plank has to be paint anywhere from 4 to 7 times and always individually to avoid it looking to uniformed. The only down side is the time it takes and every piece from the decks up also need to look like wood so a very challenging build

Hi Brian.. thank you for the kind words and it certainly is my friend. I had an idea in my head that basically made me think "can I make a plastic model appear as wood" so I painted this freehand to give me the impression. Everything from the Hull, decks, masts etc. An extremely time consuming task, but we'll and truly worth it I think.

Hi my friend. Believe it or not this isn't wood. The is the huge Heller kit. It's been painted freehand to appear as wood. A rather time consuming undertaking to say the least, but apart from some custom parts and scratch built parts this is entirely plastic.. all the deadeyes are wood as well as all the blocks etc, but but ship itself is entirely plastic my friend

Thank you Robert. That is very much appreciated.. alas I never used it. All my deadeyes, shrouds and ratlines are done by eye. This is the case for all of my models. I replaced all of the deadeyes for the soliel Royal with the Hismodel ones so all are wood, but all of my lanyards, shrouds and ratlines are done by eye my friend

@@RJScaleShipsReplicas and well done as well. I have built many wooden model ships and only recently have built plastic so I found their take on deadeyes, etc lacking. I'm with you, I'll make my own! Thanks for replying!

@@robertnewingham376 absolutely Robert. Its usually because its a very difficult piece of create a convincing mould. They are rarely very good at all. Luckily there is plenty of places to get beautifully created deadeyes and blocks to replicate the poor plastic ones. Good luck with the build my friend and thanks again 😉👍👍👍👍👍

This is the heller Soleil Royal my friend. Its one hundred percent plastic. I've painted this freehand to appear as pure wood and I agree. One of the most beautiful ships every created 😉👍👍👍

I painted mine with the blue sides with gold wales ala Jean Berain. She looks stunning. You won't be disappointed! Bill

@@billmorrison3993 Wonderful! I've started the hull, added frames and planked siding on the inside. I built a couple of supply rooms on her lowest deck. I'm adding fiber optics to mimic lanterns. When you look through the gun ports you will see structures built with flickering lanterns. I will run the fiber optics to the base box that will hold the model. Change the lantern lights in the box, no need to ever touch the model! While we are talking about beautiful ships, let me give a shout out to the "Golden Hind" in all of my years as a sailor, I'm 63 now, started sailing before I could ride a bicycle and 27 years as a professional model ship builder, The Golden Hind, proportionally is the best designed ship to cross my desk. I love the lines on that ship. For such a small ship in my opinion she is perfect. Look at her side profile..... amazing. This little ship sailed around the world in 1578!!! I have two models of her and I love it! I build some of the largest model ships in the world. I'm finishing a 40 foot hull of a 1797 Brig of war right now. The hull is made of fiberglass, it will be 60 feet LOA once her spars are bent.

Thank you very much John. That is very much appreciated, but there is very little cost in this one.. just paint really. The only cost is time. To paint a plastic ship freehand to appear as a wooden one takes a considerable amount of time, but other than that there really hasn't been any financial outlay on this build. It's pretty much straight out of the box.. 😉👍👍👍👍👍

@@RJScaleShipsReplicas not so, my friend, those wooden blocks are not cheap, and I know, because I have bought hundreds of them, and using the metal eyelets, etc.....a lot of times I will put on the scales decks ( expensive ) and if do use sails, I will only get cloth sails, so, it can certainly add up at times....but that's besides the point: it is a hobby of time and patience, something that is sorely lacking in most young people today, which is why our hobby is NOT a growing industry, unfortunately, so, we only have so many options and I find myself essentially making the same ships over and over and then finding people to give them to....

Yes they can add up John. Luckily for me I purchased an ex midel makers entire ship fittings case some time back. Literally years of stuff collected which included everything from eyelets, daadeyes, blocks etc etc. Enough of it that I haven't had to purchase anything for the last three years other than thread really. I'm constantly on the look out for things people are selling. Only a couple of weeks ago someone was selling loads of brass eyelets which he had left over from a build so I purchased them and tipped up my fittings case. I do agree that this hobby isn't growing as much as it should do. So many of the younger generation are more interested in xbox than they are making something with their hands. A shame, because its the younger generation that is responsible for keeping this hobby alive.

The base colour for the hull was my own custom mix which I called Soliel oak and then each individual plank was individually painted up to seven times using Vallejo wash pigments to create the convincing wood effect. For most of the decks and deck fittings it was around 5 different wash pigments..

I can my friend. The rigging is for all the gun ports. They will attach to the gun port doors when they are installed. You have to do this early on as it's hard to do once the decks have been installed.

I never used the chart my friend as my Soleil Royal is entirely freehand. Mainly my own wood effects, but I haven't used any chart. I usually paint to a specific image I have in my head.

@@RJScaleShipsReplicas Do you use brushes for the gold? or even an airbrush? for example on the bow there is a piece that stretches around the bow thats decorated in cold, you would have to use a fine brush for that?

Yes all my work is freehand. I never use an airbrush. In fact I don't own one so everything is by hand Jamie 😉👍👍

Hi Charles. If you have the original Soleil Royal you probably have the old instruction manual. This can be very difficult to understand. I can definitely help, but you need to find me on facebook. Look for RJ Scale Ships & Replicas on Facebook and give me a message..

The only other way really is through Instagram.. that will be the best way. You can message me there privately

It's a very long and difficult process to explain, but basically it has been painted several times to create the wood effects. The decking was about 5 different coats. A very long process, but extremely effective. You basically start with a base coat. I mixed my own colour for this one and called it Soleil Oak. Then you paint each individual planks with up to several different pigments to create the wood effect. If you check out my Instagram page @rjscaleships you'll see the decks which really are nice. The only down side of painting everything to appear as wood is the time it takes. I've put in almost the same time as it took to complete my Victory build.

I am planning on a tutorial video for this time permitting. It will be quite a difficult andengthy video process which at present I just haven't had the time, but it is in motion 😉👍👍👍

The gold is revell aqua gold, but the blue is my own mix. Royal blue was a little over the top for my liking and just over powered the wood and gold, so I mixed my own colour

@@Mlh1978 no especially the blue. O also didn't want to paint it with a white hull. Most people do that so I wanted to be different. My sole purpose for my Soleil Royal build is to try and make a plastic kit appear as a wooden one and only having a blue and gold that complement thar. I've also used a minimum amount of red on the inside so as not to distract you from the beautiful wood painted decks

@@aragorn0988 in truth my friend we dont actually know exactly how the stern of the Soleil Royal was as nothing survived and there is very little in terms of documentation to prove otherwise other than some eye witness accounts.. it is likely that the sides of the galleries were open, but again we will never know... the sails that come with the kit are plastic, but like my Victory you can purchase beautifully made sails from Hismodel. A little pricey, but when you see the quality its definitely worth it buddy 😉👍👍👍👍
