John Prine's "signature" song. A song which speaks to the reality of old age.
He wrote it when he was a young man and always played it whenever he
performed. Delivering newspapers in nursing homes, he was surprised to
see that some residents would actually lie and say that he was their nephew
(or grandson) who had come to visit them. It always struck me that he played
this song about old people when he was young and then eventually became
an old person himself (reminds me of Paul McCartney singing "When I'm Sixty
Four" as a young man, eventually reaching that age himself).
