Today I'm hearing the band Helloween for the first time after many of you recommended Michael Kiske's incredible vocals. This clip is a live performance from 1992 when the band performed their song A Tale That Wasn't Right.

Greetings and Love from Germany. Helloween had a little reunion in 2017, performing as 'Helloween Pumkins United', with first vocalist and guitarist Kai Hansen & second singer Michael Kiske & current singer Andi Deres. This live was performed in 92 and is not the best live version of this song. Listen to live performances of this song in 87 and 89, which are currently on RU-vid. Even though it is just few year earlier than this performance, his vocal capability at high notes is very different. I guess he had aged quite a bit in few years around that time.

Glad you got to this very influential band. The song I recommend is long as heck, but it showcases the music style of the band, and you get to hear the other frontman Andi Deris (Kiske was gone for some time, but now he´s back, and there are two frontmen): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1CqaLqNyFDI.html Keeper of the Seven Keys. And it´s also quite recent (2017).

Helloween has had 3 different lead singers, and lots of bands out there would kill to have any of them. That being said... Michael Kiske has Geoff Tate (of Queensryche) level talent and range. So many great songs out there, and as others have said... They are touring with all their singers now. Hearing Kiske and Andy Deris sing together is a genuine treat. Its honestly a crime that more people don't listen and react to them! Thanks for this video!!

Michael Kiske is an excellent singer, but the studio version of this song underlines the beauty of the song itself, because the limits of Michael's voice are fine-tuned and mainly he is calm for 1 song, it is not a demanding concert, the voice is rested. I recommend the studio version to get a feel for this song. In my opinion, it really belongs in the TOP 5 world metal ballads. 🤘

Fan of Deris as well, but for technique listen close to his “eee” vowels at 2 minutes, the quick “be” in should be strong, and at the end last “feel”…. all that is pure falsetto very easy to manage. Kiske will never do that ever, and is much harder. Now listen pumpkin United every time the “eee” comes it’s obvious who sings which part. I agree that despite the easier approach, Deris always nails the pitches dead on… kiske more robust but going flat. Kiske is also almost twice as loud live.. and I don’t mean mic volume.

Thanks for this stuff! I heard this song for a first time as a boy in elementary school in the late 80's. It opened the door to music for me and I discovered that there is something more than mainstream like Radio Ga Ga or Money for nothing played on the radio or TV. At that time in Poland Metallica was already a cult band, but I was a kid, it was too hard to listen to. Helloween hit me like a thunderbolt. I borrowed the vinyl from a friend and listened to this track over and over again. It changed my approach to music. To hear your commentary on this song was a HUGE pleasure 😊

Great song and reaction! I love the bit about "strong" - I've always had a devil of a time singing that word and having it sound right cus it's too easy to slip into nasal resonance. I've tried putting my lips a bit to darken it and help push it forward and that works but the way he handles it in this vid is great too.

An interesting choice for a first reaction to Helloween. I enjoyed it! I would highly recommend that you check out "How Many Tears" from their Pumpkins United tour. Why? Because you'll get to experience all three of the vocalists they have had over the years, and also some amazing high notes from Michael Kiske, almost 40 years into his career. And I feel that Andi Deris, who replaced him in the band is a highly underrated vocalist. Other, more common choices to react to are "Halloween" (just make sure you don't do the edited official video for the song) and "Keeper of the Seven Keys." Helloween is pretty much responsible for power metal becoming what it is, and I think Michael Kiske belongs up there with the metal greats (Dio, Dickinson, Halford, etc...).

Just FYI: Sirtaki is actually a relatively recent invention in the grand scheme of Greek traditions. While the dance incorporates elements of traditional Greek dances like the syrtos and hasapiko, the specific choreography and the famous music by Mikis Theodorakis were created specifically for the 1964 film "Zorba the Greek."

The most spectacular thing about Michael is how little his voice has aged

Kiske covers "Blue suede shoes" it's on a bonus track/single b-side on Helloween's "Pink bubbles go ape" album.

Please. I dont know speaking english. Translate português _n english. Muita pausa e comentários durante a música. Deixe a música tocar inteira, e depois faça seus comentários. Alguns canais do gênero proce dem assim. É muito melhor.

This is an interesting choice to start with Helloween. The most impressive songs by this legendary german Power Metal band might be "Keeper of the seven keys" (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3YRK6GF_mGM.html) or "Halloween" :Ö(ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dtPs1QrMI1I.html), both more than 13 minutes long.

While we're on the subject of one of the grandfathers of power metal, how about the other? Listen to Blind Guardian. Perhaps The Bard's Song/ Valhalla ore Mirror Mirror.

Michael he has a tenor type voice and possesses an almost 4 octave vocal range, as he is capable of reaching extremely high notes (A5) and low baritone notes (E2) as well

I love Kiske's voice. But I'll be stoned if I say I like Andy Deris' version better. This clip with Michael doesn't show his real skills. Of course I can understand a vocal coach preferring a live version, but on Helloween the early live performances and videos aren't great in terms of audio and video quality. I therefore recommend the album versions for the early phase.
