3 litre v6, 410bhp, 9000rpm, and 0-60 in 3.2 secs in a car that weighs the same as a baked bean can................ now i know why these cars got banned! INSANE!
@Craig Yates that power to weight description sums it up nicely!! I'm glad i was lucky enough to be around when Group B first came on the scene and remember watching Tony Pond on what was then the Lombard RAC Rally. Since the end of Group B i've only seen the occasional 6R4 at hill climb meets. They really were a lethal machine.....quite funny when you think the bog standard Metro pumped out 45bhp achieving the mind blowing speed of 80 odd mph and the choice of many pensioner pottering along to the supermarket!!
Awesome! :) It's not difficult to find onboards of classicperformance cars driven on some showcase events: reveved a bit, accelerated a bit, but everything only to give the public some idea of what the car was like. Onboards like these, on the other hand, where such a car is "driven in anger", where its potential is truly exploite, are rare. Kudos to Craig and whoever made this possible. And thanks for the video!
Loads of power, not much brakes, old skool springs and dampers, crunchy gearbox. Massive credit to Craig Breen for getting a 6R4 to go this fast and recording it too :) It must feel so weird after a modern WRC car.
I never truly realised that he had this much talent. I watched him more recently compete on televised stages of the WRC rallies across the world scoring many stage wins but I believe it was only a matter of time until he achieved his first WRC win. Now having seen his speed and commitment on this wet tarmac stage, wow. I don't know if the rallying world may ever truly come to terms and with what they lost when he sadly passed away in a tragic accident in preparation tests for rally croatia. In all the rally viewing interviews with him between stages it was no surprise he always came across as such an intelligent, humble, grounded and good natured human being, let alone the talent he showed behind the wheel. So proud to have Irish roots, thinking of your family and friends. Rest in peace Craig Breen.
The best in-car footage video recorded in the last 10yrs, his talent was endless, he could adapt to any vehicle and ring its neck under full control...... his talent and wit will be sorely missed. RIP Craig
This is one of my favorite GR. B cars, the Metro took a different approach, going NA with larger displacement and more cylinders. This results in superior power curve, where there is no turbo lag and torque is available in low end rpm, and this thing sounds awesome! Legend has it this car had reliability issues though.
@@TheExplosiveGuy The sim version is steps above the arcade versions. Dirt 1.0/2.0. All of the others are trash. Dirt 3.0 will be out soon enough. I hope they add Isle of man stages personally.
As a typical bloke I often watch such videos, even the pros, and think things like "Could have gone round there faster, could have broke a bit later, could have accelerator a bit sooner". I did not, at all, in this video. What a run. Awesome!
This is INSANE! Definitely the best in car 6R4 footage I've seen, plus the driver has bollocks of steel! The 6R4 is definitely my favourite of the incredible and crazy lineup of Group B racers.
Saw Tony Pond in one for the first outing in Wales but the fastest I ever saw one traveling was David Llewellyn coming across Epynt in torrential rain in one. What a noise! Made Mikkola in the Quattro Sport look slow. David binned it big time soon after but unforgettable drive.
Holy shit, this has to be the absolute CLOSEST we will ever get to seeing how these cars were actually driven in period back in the group b days. I think this is the only modern onboard of a group b car ive seen where the driver is actually on the absolute limit. Fucking beautiful
Awesome driving, all cars should sound like that! Dreading the electric era! I remember the days standing in the forests heating these beasts coming, S1 was just something else but the 6R4’s always screaming
The closest these days is 997 GT3 at full chat, I remember seeing Will Gollop's Rallycross Bi-turbo version and then being blown away by how much better Rob Gibson's NA version sounded.
What a truly great bit of video. What fantastic driving. The group B rally cars were just brilliant to watch. I always had a general dislike of the 6R4, but only because it was based on the Leyland Metro, and I wasn't a fan of Leyland products. I was a big fan of the RS200, but that aside, it was always a joy (and still is) to hear that V6 working hard and doing its job.
That was some fantastic driving in what looked to be very slippy tricky conditions..i tip my hat to you Sir you are a very talented man and not forgetting what an awesome bit of kit the 6r4 metro is the great car combined with the great driver made for a brilliant onboard view of what its really like to be in a rally car.
WOW where do u ever see a grp B car driven as hard as that on a stages ! only in Ireland and with Craig Breen behind the wheel on maximum attack a rally clip witch will go down in history thanks all
Pedal cam too next time 🤔😀? Amazingly tractable engine but then I forgot it was naturally asp wasn’t it. I remember these ripping through Sutton Park as a kid , immersed in that incredible sound.
Looks like he's just banging them home each time. If there were synchros when he started there were none at the end. There's a lot of clutchless downshifting, rev matching seems to be a luxury.
I’ve been lucky enough to drive a 6R4 a few years back, full international spec. These cars were made for men! I can drive a bit, but I tell you what, the things you can do in them is enough to make most people cry. It’s not just black lines you leave on the road!
Awesome camera footage, what a drive 👍 Shame they banned the 6R4 it would be Awesome if they bought the 6R4 back, How cool would that be. A long time ago back when I was 15 I was out cycling when I drove past a dusty lane which looked like it led up to a farm gate, I could hear what I thought was a racing car going around behind a hidden hedge. Anyway as I was just on my bike I pushed the gate open and made my way through the hedge and racing around a very short farm type circuit was WILL GOLOP in his Metro 6R4. I sat and watched Will for an hour, I loved the 6R4 ever since 😀
Driven hard and driven very well! Love that normally-aspirated V6 sound! No idea if this is a Clubman or International spec, but great to see it being used in anger! Bring back Group B! Current WRC cars are boring by comparison. Great footage. Thanks for posting!
I was lucky enough to follow group B cars in their heyday. My friends and I spent many nights sleeping in ours cars following the RAC in the 80'S. Believe me the 6R4 was spectacular, yes the Audi's with flames shooting out of their exhausts and tremendous engine roar were fantastic! But nothing compared to the screaming V6 6R4 sound in the Welsh forests. Unfortunately the group B was banned and if memory serves me right the 6R4 only had about 18 months of group B life. I am sure if the group had of gone on longer it would have been very successful:-)
