You're moving around town or roads on a single wheel on a speed that is faster than anyone can run, who cares if the gear is a bit dorky. We're still the coolest riding these EUC and it's a lot smarter to not wait for a crash before thinking about safety. I'm getting a KS16X this month and I'm looking for a similar helmet like you just bought. I was not too worried on my V8 but I really want to upgrade my gear if I am to ride a faster (not fastest) wheel.
I'm just getting into EUC's and these are all very helpful things to know. You've saved me some time learning the long and hard way. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing. This is my biggest issue when switching from a scooter to the EUC. I want a Skully helmet with its integrated HUD...but $2K? Issa no. My workaround is two Bug Eyes mirrors on my Sena modular helmet. I'm still getting used to trying to see behind me while not missing a pothole ahead of me.
Hey check out “REEVU” helmets. I ordered one after watching a video about them. Should get here in a week or so. I’ve seen mixed reviews so I thought I’d check one out myself.
Donkey Dem Yes. I looked into that but they haven’t continued developing it. I look forward to your thoughts though since there are so few current reviews. Please let me know!
Took your advice, and does exactly like you said, just keeps me aware of my surroundings, works great and I also did your wrist guard mirrors, I use these when I need a better view behind me, the combination is cheap, easy, and effective, thanks for the advice, sure saved me alot of trial and error,
The dual lock works great. I use the same mirror for 4 helmets that I own. Super solid hold. Just take it off the last helmet I used and put the mirror on the next helmet I plan to use.
Can bring small mirror closer to eyeball for wider view. Has the added benefit of being a more stable platform because mirror moves less relative to eyeball.
My helmet mirror makes me feel so much safer on the road. As a matter of fact, there was a drunk driver on the road, which I barely saw coming behind me, and had just enough time to swerve out of the way because a second later the car flew by right where I was in the bike lane. I would have been toast without that mirror!
Great information; just what I needed. Thanks. I do have to voice my opinion on black helmets. They're not visible enough, especially at night. They make look bad-ass and cool, but no one can really see you. I have the most hidious visible yellow helmet imaginable. It is the total opposite of cool, but which would you rather be, dorky and alive or cool and dead? My motorcycle is also yellow. I immediately saw a reduction of cars pulling out in front of me.
Dual lock is great stuff ... I used a super cheap dollar store mirror because I wasn't even sure I wanted one. I might have to get a mirror with the convex lens. I bet with enough fiddling around you could find a setup that can dual lock forward (deployed) or reversed (stowed) on the same piece of dual lock
Excellent video thank you. Have you seen the Reevu helmets? A bit expensive for biking but a very cool unique idea. Mixed reviews from people on this new idea. I’m getting one from amazon because it’s easy to return if it doesn’t work out. I believe they use some sort of prismatic mirrors mounted into the back of the helmet that project it through to a small flip down screen inside. Not quite sure how it works but waaaaay less than helmets that have actual cameras built-in to the back of them with the screen inside that require power. Cheers!
I think I have. I suspect that it has less total coverage (I can turn my head a little to direct my gaze), but of course I don't know. I'd love to hear how well it works.
The problem with a helmet mirror is that you have to level your head and be looking straight forward first. That is why I also keep wide view convex mirrors velcroed to my wrist guards.
I'm not sure if it was you or Duf, but after seeing these mirrors being used for EUC riding, I got one for my helmet, and I wouldn't ride without one now. I ditched the crappy velcro mounting that it came with, and used some exterior grade double-sided mounting tape. On my second helmet(full face BMX), I got the convex style mirror, and made some clips to mount it to the edge of the visor. Still not sure if I like the wider view of the convex, or the closer view of the flat. I'm looking forward to trying that dual-loc stuff next time I need to mount something.
I "think" I'm the original proponent of helmet mirrors or at least the most vocal person. Jesse (San Fran rider) turned me onto Dual Lock. The stuff is amazing. And for this application it's looking like that's all I'll need.
Too bad the Reevu helmets are all gone now. Im still using my same patched up one from 2014. I even called the maker and they said at this time they have no plans to make more... maybe next year. At this point Im hoping the patent expires and others could make them.
I put a mirror on the bar end and it's pretty good, but when I upgrade to a Turbowheel Lightning, I'll upgrade to a full face and a helmet mirror. Thanks.
Marty those little mirrors are horrible. Try the "EVT Safe Zone Bicycle Helmet Mirror" on Amazon/Ebay, it is 2.25" and a massive upgrade. Alternatively (as you mentioned) get a 2" or 3" blindspot mirror off Amazon and glue it on top of your old cheapo bike mirrors - you'll see 100% better.
Thanks for the suggestions. I've already experimented plenty and these work perfect for me. It's important that people don't buy the flat version of these mirrors because the FOV is poor. I only use the "slightly" convex versions.
Marty, I was following your woodworking with great interest, and wondered what happened to you when your new woodworking videos ended. It's good to see that you appear very much alive and well, and your unicycle videos (I've watched a few) are very interesting. If I was younger, (and less fragile - now 78) I would have one of these. I'm just a couple of generations past my ability to do this kind of thing. Have you given up woodworking entirely for this new hobby?
Hi Charley. Thanks for stopping by. These wheels have consumed my life for the past few years, but I'm still woodworking. I actually retired a few months ago so my intention is to revitalize my woodworking channel this upcoming year, since I have much more time now :-)
@@ElectricUnicycles Thanks for the quick reply. Just retired? You look younger than that. I retired 25 years ago, but then worked several more jobs before really retiring. Woodworking and photography keep me busy now. Shop is in a separate building and photo studio is upstairs in my home. Knees and heart problems keep me from being as physically active as you.
@@charleyl264 59. I was fortunate enough to retire on the early side. I also enjoy photography which I like to fold into my woodworking and EUC interests. Knock on wood, I'll remain healthy to stay active in the EUC community.
@@ElectricUnicycles I'm an EE by trade. I retired at 56, but then a series of job offers that were "too good to pass up" for short term high pay jobs that kept me going back to work again and again 5 more times, but then my last job was just for fun. I drove a 24" gauge train in the local park for one season, two years ago. It looked like a wood burner, but actually had a 4 cyl. fork lift engine in it. Since 2000 I have needed 7 heart surgeries and both knee replacements due to a fire fighting injury in 1978. I would have a Gotway now, if I hadn't needed all this repair work.
@@charleyl264 I actually know of people over 80 that ride, but of course if you really are fragile (break bones super easy) it's probably not wise. Just want to say you actually don't need to ride fast to really enjoy these. They can be fun even at a slow jogging pace.
In the road cycling world this is one of the most common ways to be hit.. never trust that cars see you if you have even the slightest inclination they're about to turn.
I highly recommend the Flexmeter wrist guard. Arguably the best that you can buy. Many of us wear them. See link in my equipment list in the Description.
Great video Marty, funny thing I just got my mirrors yesterday and they're the same ones Duf recommended, good tip on resecuring it with glue. 😎👍 Ill definitely do that, thanks Marty love these Tips video. Btw its protection not production...lol.
No. I'm now using the Dual-Lock. Zero issues and it's been many months. The mirror is firmly secure and does not move at all like it would with regular Velcro.
