I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Helmet was a band who never did things the way they were supposed to. From rejecting the idea of having an edgy “rock n’ roll” image, to lead singer Page Hamilton getting a ver1y traditional music education, The media labelled them as heavy metal even comparing Hamilton’s vocals to ozzy osbourne, but Hamilton’s biggest influences drew on jazz and the noise rock scene of New York City.. Today let’s talk about the history of Helmet, how they were considered to be the next “nirvana” and what really happened to the band.
Helmet’s formation didn’t follow the typical formula of two childhood friends starting a group together. Instead, Page Hamilton was always very much the leader of the destiny of the group, and he never set out to be a rock musician. The band’s songs sound like a stop and start sledghammaer, featuring odd time signatures and guitar tunings.
Hailing from Medford, Ore., which Hamilton referred to as and i quote a "typically redneck town of 25,000," One of his first jobs was working at the local logging mill and a fruit orchard. He would recall to Rolling Stone “I was just a really nice little small-town geek who wanted to play baseball and football," He was a pot-head who picked up guitar in his final year of high school after listening to Led Zeppelin IV. After high school he would attend Lane Community College and it was here he played in one of his first bands a new wave cover act named Twist and the Ups. While a student there he would end up learning jazz guitar and classical music. He would also meet two professors, one who was taught philosophy and the other who taught literature who helped him develop as a songwriter. He would tell the News Times “They encouraged him to write "Obviously, it was a literature class. We were writing poetry and things like that. As I started messing around with words more than I had in the past, I always sort of wrote stuff down in a little traveling notebook that I carried around."”
. He would soon enroll in the University of Oregon, but he struggled through his first term getting a 1.9 GPA in his first year. It would be ttwo jazz guitarists who convinced him to pursue music as a career. They also taught Hamilton the importance of Space in music with him telling the newspaper. He would tell the News Times “They turned me on to the use of space in my playing," They said 'You don't have to play out everything you know every time you pick up the guitar. He would earn a degree in jazz and Classical Guitar telling the Chicago Tribune "I began to feel that rock was limited and that jazz had a real language," Of course Hamilton’s parents had other plans hoping their son would become a professional like a lawyer or doctor and he would recall to Rolling Stone his parent’s reaction when he told them he wanted to become a professional musician "They're very small-town, family and work oriented so my dad's first word when I told him I was going to be a music major was 'Bullshit!' His eyes were like saucers!"
By 1985 Hamilton moved across the country New York to further pursue his education and get a masters degree in jazz guitar. It was in New York he met Glenn Branca, who Sonic Youth’s thurston moore and Lee Ronaldo had played with. It was during his time in new york he would be ex

I saw them at Wacken 2018 - I had completely forgotten about Helmet at that point. I was a massive fan in the late 90s in my mid teens but being in Australia, if Northern Hemisphere bands fell off the radar there - you can bet we'll never hear about that here. Long story short, after seeing them in Germany I have now been back on the Helmet train!

Loved the shit out of Helmet. Saw Helmet play with Manson in 97. I was 23. The club in Atlanta advertised the concert on a Tuesday. I called ahead to make sure the concert was still on. The club told me the concert was on a Wednesday. I kept quiet about it. I was at Ft Benning and drove with my friends to the concert. When we got there. It was maybe 30 people there. The band managers were screaming at the club owner for the mistake. Helmet came out first. The whole time they were playing. The crowd was chanting “Manson” “Manson” During Meantime the lead singer yells. “Fuck you and he kicks the amp off the stage. The amp almost hit me and my friends. Manson came out. It was one of my favorite shows. At the end of the concert. Manson came up to me and asked me if I was in the military. I told him yes. So then Manson salutes me and licks the side of my face! Twiggy thanked us. I told twiggy I knew about the mixup and said nothing. Manson said. We got paid anyway so it’s cool.

Considering my love of _Meantime_ and the fact that its 30th anniversary is next year (man time flies) I contemplated trying to come up with some sort of "What Ever Happened" video... Now that I've seen this I know it would be pointless. Besides the fact that you covered everything relevant your video editing is better than mine and I don't have access to stock footage 😄. Great work, thank you for making this! And I totally agree that they were severely underrated and it was very likely primarily fueled by their plain looks - but IMHO it's still way better than if they had adopted an image that wasn't really theirs to fit in with industry standards of the time. Not that I cared (I actually preferred it that way) but I certainly was not of the same opinion as a lot of other people. It's hard to tell how many people I exposed the album to in the early '90s that had seen a video or two on MTV and initially dismissed it but came around (in a big way) after hearing me rock it a couple of times - especially after hearing the songs that never had any airtime. Great example = as soon as "Better" starts I start to get excited for that *epic* bridge (the whole song is great of course).
