Helmut Lotti - "Poljushko Polje" ("Field, my field")
For the girls, the goodbyes are heartbreaking when their loved ones have to leave for the army. Because the army, no matter how well armed, always has to deal with an enemy that shows no mercy.
The song originated in the thirties of the last century. A soldiers song, a song of the Red Army, that developed a bitter historical taste since World War II and the thereupon following Cold War.
-------------------------------
Field, my field, my wide field,
The heroes ride over the field,
hey, the heroes of the Red Army.
The girls are crying,
the girls are sorrowful today,
their sweethearts went away for a long time,
hey, their sweethearts went away to the army
---------------------------------

If we take into account the fact that the song dates back to 1934, the lyrics might sound as an omen to the dark times that would come for the people of the Russlands and the 17 millions deads tribute they would pay in the conflict to come. Independently of any inexistent politic propaganda the song is really moving when replaced into its historical context.

Девушки, гляньте, Девушки, утрите слезы. Пусть сильнее грянет песня, Эх, да боевая наша песня! Полюшко-поле, Полюшко, зелено поле! Едут по полю герои, Эх, да русской армии герои!

I agree - his Russian is excellent for one whose native tongue is Flemish. It's not like a native Russian, but at least he doesn't murder the song like some performers tend to do. Although I wish they would have kept the original "красной армии" instead of "русскай армии"...

My father used to have some collaboration with the Russians when I was a child: so familiar the looks even though I know almost nothing of Russia. Is it the World War II still affecting? Between Finland and Russia all care about all and in questions of the war it is like in the taoist classic Tao-Te-Ching: "The men enter the battle sorrowfully and without maliciousness as if attending a funeral (of the enemy soldiers)."
@wotan20
@wotan20 7 лет назад
Now we heard this popular song many times before, mainly by the famous Alexander Ensemble which done it well. Here Mr. Lotti tries to make the song more accessible to International audience, that's why the brief introductory explanation, as well as the intermingling of Russian and English lyrics, which has been seamlessly fused and otherwise excellently done by this phenomenally talented singer.

@harutuniananna It's not his fault,but often when songs are translated to another lenguage,in this case english, they don't sound as good as is in the original .The russian bit sounds phenomenal.It's the same with Shakira,when she sings in spanish is so good...no so much when she attempts to do it in english.But for some reason ,not a good one,english has become the lenguage that any singer has to sing if they want to have international success.

Being arrogant, a bit stupid and also ignorant doesn't give you the right to judge others. Also speaking English isn't such a quality, I prefer people who speak Russian. If your mind tells you than only English- speakers are qualified to debaTe ( when you instruct others to learn grammar please check your own first ) on something than it really is short. But still the point is that the song doesn't come from cossacks but bolsheviks. And it is beautiful whatever your opinion on communists is.

What breed horses were used by the Cossacks? Is there a Russian warmblood type cavalry horse comparable to western European breeds? Akhal Tekes seem a little light boned for those purposes. Anybody out there know anything? A friend of mine bought a breed to a horse named Groms that did exhibition jumping in the Moscow Circus, but he died before she could get her mare to him. It was such a shame. He was a gorgeous big black thing. Just stunning. I wonder if he was typical Russian breeding.
