The latest attack by Hamas has shown the limits of Israel’s defensive systems including the Iron Dome.
While Iron Dome has been able to intercept many incoming rockets, the platform at several points during this conflict seems to have been overwhelmed.
A new system holds the key to the future of defensive cover for Israel - Iron Beam
The laser weapon is designed to defend against different kinds of projectiles that are launched toward Israel by knocking them out of the air.
It will complement the country’s existing layered air defense which consists of several air defense systems like Iron Dome and Arrow.
According to some reports, this weapon system is set to see its accelerated deployment in response to the current situation.
The system, originally anticipated to be operational in a few years, will serve as the short-range component of the Israeli integrated missile defense system.
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes why Iron Beam is critical for Israel?

There is nothing to fast track Israel should have multiple layer defenses of missiles and gun based systems just for saturation attacks The Germany Gepard is system they should consider modding for their needs Mount on Merkva frame with a single 35mm gun with 2500 round capacity with Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) , AESA radar and fully networked Able to use programmable rounds for anti air , anti armor and anti personnel

Or... just save billions of $ in research and simply shell all the islamic terror states around them back to the stone age where they belong for good. The laser is a local solution, the later is a global solution.

Keeping Hamas ineffective and powerless is job one. Get that done and then dismantle Hezbollah. You won’t need so many laser beam weapons after that’s accomplished

I will not argue with your logic as such, but let's check. Hamas gets wiped out and same with Hezbollah. But there is a human cost. A bunch of civilians die. Do you not think another Hamas and Hezbollah will not re-occur? Your first sentence makes perfect sense to me. To my mind it's containment. And then see.

Rafael is working with Lockheed because US already has a 150kw laser defense system & is developing a 300kw & 500kw powered laser defense system. Rafael Iron beam has a 100kw laser but is trying to get a more powerful laser for Iron beam.
@DoronL73
@DoronL73 10 месяцев назад
@@everypitchcounts4875 correct, but the 300 and 500 require a powerful power source that exists on ships, they have a 40-50 mobile ground one on a striker but it can only shoot down UAV at a close range and not strong enough for rocket and mortars... so Iron Beam has its proper place, it requires a container size power generator

Should fast-track US carrier based lasers, too. Ford-class reportedly has triple the power output of Nimitz-class. Lasers and other possible directed-energy weapons are in the Pentagon's mind for the near and far future for Ford-class.

Lockheed has already delivered 300kW to the Army and is currently scaling that system up to 500kW 500kW is what the USN considers to be useful against missiles but ideally they still need a shell based system So either adopt the hyper-velocity projectile (HVP) for the 5 inch gun or work out the rail gun issue

I saw some footage of IronBeam in action. It looks nothing like IronDome in blast effect at intercept. It's fast. I know the system is still beta, but it'll totally replace dome.

It will not replace Iron Dome. Iron Beam is MUCH shorter range than Iron Dome. It is also much more vulnerable to being swarmed, because even at 100 kilowatts, it can't destroy targets very fast, it has to stay on the target for appreciable seconds, all the more so for artillery shells which are 'hard' targets. Instead it will be added to Iron Dome to create a 'second layer' for critical areas to get a second shot at threats that make it past Iron Dome. It 'might' also be deployed close to likely origins of attacks with the intent of trying to save on expensive Iron Dome interceptors, but that will also make them much more vulnerable to attack themselves. They are fragile systems, likely very vulnerable to nape-of-the-earth Radioshack drones carrying mortar shells. Three or four such drones dashing from cover simultaneously would be more than it could deal with. Sadly, there is no panacea.
@DrJaneLuciferian
@DrJaneLuciferian 11 месяцев назад
@@panpiper Yes, you're absolutely right, at least in the current incarnation. It doesn't have the range, it is subject to weather conditions, and you need a lot of units because the time on target is a factor. I was thinking more long term, once the system is proven and expanded upon. I was imagining IronBeam nodes dotted all over the place in a fairly tight mesh, and with different frequencies and up-rated wattages for better weather handling. But, even with all that advancement, the missiles as the shield of last resort will still be required. I was just being exuberant about the video footage of it in operation. It is an impressive system :^)
@panpiper
@panpiper 11 месяцев назад
@@DrJaneLuciferian I agree, it's impressive, and I dream of the day we can have enough of these deployed to create an interlocking chain of them with overlapping areas of intercept to support one another. Installing that quantity would be very expensive, but over a short enough border with a big enough threat, it could seriously mitigate the problem.

What will stop them from covering the rockets with reflective coating??
@LetsShitPost
@LetsShitPost 11 месяцев назад
Even if it reflected 95% of the beam, it will still burn and allow the laser to destroy the rocket, so that wont really work. Will need to be made of a crazy high heat resistant material, or have some way to disperse the light before jt reaches the target. Definitely not something but the most advanced countries could even start planning on theorizing about pulling off.

It would have to reflect the wavelength of the beam. And if it changes frequency several time a secong or even every shot, a mirror or reflector would be useless. Nothing but heavt dead weight on the missle.

Your arithmetic isn't supported by facts as the damage to life and property is well over $80.000,- This means they will intercept anything posing a danger to life and property. But they will ignore any missiles not going towards a populated area or military infrastructure (seldom a target for Hamas). The current version of Iron Beam is used to take out the drones used by the terrorists. The upgraded versions will enter service as planned and will be capable of interception of rockets and missiles.

@roderickcampbell2105
@roderickcampbell2105 11 месяцев назад
@@octonoozle That was a fair question and deserved something better than a short snide answer Octo. Of course it's a pulse and not focus per se, and the answer is approximately 50 ms (1 Iron second?) depending on conditions. And destroy is a qualitative term. The missile can be rendered inoperative without being destroyed.
