As a tutor which uses HBL on laptops, I must say this method does not work for every kid. The said student must be disciplined and independent enough to carry out on their own. Some kids blatantly use their mobile phones, space out or tune out or simply could not focus on the lessons. These are some kids who need a human presence. The school's HBL is also not standardised. In the same school, I've heard different teachers may carry out their lessons differently. One student even confessed to me that lessons become slower because there is a limit to what can be taught online. I don't even want to go on and talk about the homework bit.

as a University Student I hate online classes, the lecturers teach a class of 80-120 student, there is no way to ask questions, and even if you are able to ask questions, its difficult to ask follow up questions since by the time you type out the question the lecturer has gone to a different topic or even question.

@@campkira About 70% of classes throughout my uni experience do not use the book but require it be purchased. The only benefit is most of the time you can find the information online and professors recycle or buy their tests. With online classes, you're not really learning because you can cheat your butt off. This is especially true in classes that transitioned to remote learning because of the pandemic. The only expectation is in paper/report based classes.

Nice one. Noticed the disciplined and those who thrive on tech online, do well. As parent, my sec2 thrived with HBL(he's usually too distracted in school to be productive). Teachers were surprised and giving positive feedback as they couldnt get that level of productivity out of him in school. While on the other end, educating via HBL, has worked quite well, been pretty productive but the lesson planning much more tedious in order to keep students hooked to your class.There are merits with HBL. But of course curriculum needs to be balanced with contact in person...one size never fits all. So from June, my sec2 will be distracted again when school reopens.. sigh.

My kids have been at it for several weeks now and they enjoy it. The only stumbling block has been the teachers who have had a hard time adjusting to teaching online and using the new technology. I don't have discipline problems, they love through the assignments quickly and have time to explore more deeply the things that they really enjoy. The lessons are on video so they can go back and review if they don't understand. They can message teachers if they need more clarity. I act more as a manager, making sure things are turned in and complete. This works well for us.

Here in the U.S. my 10 year old son learns on a similar platform.The difference appears to be that he is required to have daily zoom meetings with teachers to be counted for attendance.He meets 4 times a day with these teachers , so there is plenty of face time and teacher student interaction. The only drawback is the teachers only meet for 30 minutes each which I feel is not enough.

About the sandbox thingy. Yes indeed. But it's not foolproof as well. You as a parent might secure your own PC but other childrens' parents might not do so or don't know how to do it. So hackers can go thru the ones that are not secured to hack into the platform. Theres no way to stop hackers if they are bent on hacking websites.

Peer influence or peer pressure is neutral and can be used for good or evil. The benefits of studying together with peers in the school or university, is your peripheral vision and sub-consciousness knows that others around you are studying (herd mentality) which indirectly motivate you to study. Humans are highly influenced by their environment and peers e.g. Singapore half-way houses for illegal drug addicts. Thesis? It’s not so simple to apply the above to work environment as type of work are vastly different between companies, between management and employees, between industries, between white or blue collar workers. For example, in schools, teachers can constantly regulate the students not to interrupt each other when doing deep learning or listening or thinking tasks. With open office concept, the manager is often not around (playing golf with his manager in view of his upcoming performance review), or when the manager is around, he can’t technically babysit each and every employee all the time to obey him like a dictator or parent. After all, we live in a democratic society and it’s financially advantageous to interrupt or disrupt job promotion competitors indirectly.

HBL is a mess that MOE has no clue how to run properly. No standardising, no guidelines. Up to each school and the teachers to do as they like. My son’s primary school only had live lessons on the last week. A shambolic nonsense as far as I’m concerned

@krollpeter
@krollpeter 4 года назад
@@BCRN_games Before the lockdown, my son's school did one single day "training" for HBL. All his teachers had issues mostly fighting with the setup and other organisational problems. In the following they did not do any online lesson anymore, only super-extended regular homework. After some time, some of them re-startet trying with online video lesson. Unfortunately the next day the security problems the with Zoom app occurred. Full screeching halt again. I always said don't use all this seemingly free US apps. In this case, the owner is a Chinese and the servers are located in China. But that's another problem. Anyway, there are free and better alternatives for video lessons. From that day my son had every day 6 - 8 hours extended homework, on some days he sat for 12 h. I complained to the teachers and got the reply, that the kids in the emergency class do the same in 4 h. Straight out: Impossible. If the homework is done in a proper manner, and not smear down the compo anyhow on a paper, an don't care to get the facts in your science right, then 4 h is outright impossible. I sat with him every single day, every hour, I know exactly what I am saying. 5 days before "extended homework HBL" officially ended, the teachers practically ended "lessons" already. I wrote another email, asking if over the "holiday" they could at least once a week have an online session, with the purpose to get the class having a bit time together and keep them a bit connected, bonded. Nothing. Did not even receive a reply. Initially I thought: No, that can not be the standard in Singapore, it is our school only. All parents I talked to said similar. And by the way, I was also shocked how many of the materials such as the papers and SLS contained mistakes. May be I am too much used to the government in Singapore usually organising all things to near perfection. This time I am only left to say: FAIL. Not pass.

But if the school ask to use Zoom, will you lock your child out from it? Or Google docs? Or other things that are data suckers? So why do you explain that to me? I would use Jitsi, as an example. @@krollpeter sorry I meant no one used zoom before the virus outbreak so it was illogical that suddenly so many schools began using it despite there being many better communication apps with more features and uses than zoom. personally, I am quite young not that close to relating to being a parent so I am not that impressed by encrypted voice files, images, and text files being sent to servers actually Whatsapp is pretty much that without the conferencing feature. To me, the zoom was only used because many teachers are not good with technology, zoom tends to be simpler to use but I feel that is bad as in a technology-driven age the fact zoom was suddenly used in many schools proves that tech literacy is still not that important in Singapore and not that good in general

There is no level field when it comes to HBL (online learning) - the disadvantaged becomes more apparently disadvantaged. The rich have better resources, a maid to feed the children when doing HBL, educated parents/adults who could afford the time and competency to assist in their work and the list goes on. The poor, rather than having the resources to support their children, had to be content with only making ends meet and are likely, habouring the fear of a job lost for the breadwinner in the family. Even with the govt doing their utmost to provide for the disadvantaged, the effects of the pandemic has certainly revealed who becomes further marginalised in this harsh reality.

Nope.. Not gonna happen.. Not even gonna try.. Kids at my house are currently having the time of their lives.. And that's how it should be.. We're all treating this as a long holiday for them.. Totally ZERO school works.. Their parents (my elder sister and brother) are currently all in their kid's classroom's whatsapp group.. Teacher's are sending home work everyday and even sending youtube link for online classes.. Ignoring all of them as we speak... But we are training them on helping their parents and grandparents with simple daily chores at home.. What better time to let them feel how it's like to be an adult for a change.. In that case, when school reopens, they will learn how to appreciate what grown ups do for them everyday during their absence (in school).. This is the best time for life lessons 101..
