Why doesn’t your CV get any response from Danish employers? How do your skills and certifications land you a job in Denmark? Is there any hope for landing a job in the Danish workforce? This episode is all about how to find a job in Denmark as foreigner and what you can expect from working in Denmark.
This week, Annie and Derek are joined by Leslea Petersen, the Founder and CEO of English Job Denmark. She tells her story of how she found herself living in Denmark and struggling to find a job. Her “moving to Denmark story” and “finding a job in Denmark” will sound familiar and relatable to a lot of people. Unlike most people, it led her to apply her skills in helping other foreigners in Denmark land a job here.
Leslea explains all the differences in networking and crafting a CV for life in Denmark. Derek gets tips on how to properly use LinkedIn without scaring away Danes, and Annie learns what role the Danish language can have on your employment journey and what to do if you don’t can’t snakker the Dansk.

im am a user of hjemmeplejen, i am fluent in english, so i have no problem communicating with english speakers, how ever i will say that it is absolutely critical that care workers are completely fluent in danish, otherwise it can in the worst case scenario cost lives due to miss communication, ie. medication dosages ect. No matter where you come from and what your field of job might be, i do strongly recommend that you do your very best to become fluent in danish, it will unlock doors for you.

A tip for network building: join one two clubs (foreninger) - sports, cultural, political. Foreninger are a big part of the Danish social fabric.

This is possibly the most useful video/blog episode that I have watched! That's probably slightly subjective to say, especially considering how helpful all Robe Trotting/WYIDID content has been for me before and during my move to Denmark, but this one just came along at exactly the right time and Leslea gives tons of really great and practical advice for job seekers here. I was literally taking notes and making to-do lists while watching and the first thing I did was to go and find networking events to go to. And they have been great! I've also since attended an English Job Denmark workshop with Leslea and I can highly recommend doing this. If you guys could get Leslea back for a Part 3, I think it would be amazing and really helpful to so many who are on the job hunt in Denmark at the moment. This kind of support is great! Keep up the good work 🙂

Janteloven. Yes, it’s real. Many Danes I find, pretend it is not a thing, but it is.

I agree with your take - it seems like people often deny it but it’s very present:

@@RobeTrottingI think Danes that deny it is there mean ‘its how we are, get used to it’, rather than reflecting on how it looks seen from outside.

What you are refering to about legally jobs who is posted is jobs in the public. Public jobs for longer than a year is legally required to be posted but a big chunck of them is filled by internal applications. I know because I am a native Dane applying for job.

According to most think tanks, from 2017, Denmark "needs 35,000 new Danes/workers + family" every year until 2030 to maintain the workforce, the social pressure, care for the elderly, cleaning and the decline in the birth rate from its own citizens. So if you don't come here voluntarily and the Danes don't change their views on strangers/foreigners who come here, how the hell else is it going to be possible. Another reason is perhaps that the Danish politicians thought that everything must go so fast and in overdrive. Love your approach to life, the country, positive and curious. Stay tuned!!!❤👍🤟

@@RobeTrotting You talk about language and barriers in the Danish labor market. Of course there are jobs you can't do if you don't speak the language. You can't expect everyone to speak English, why should we when the language is Danish. Then I try to draw a parallel to the expectations for me if I, as a Dane, settled in the United States, where I wouldn't get far with my Danish language. You are lucky that a lot of people speak English, I would be a bit more på røven 😄 By the way, I love your podcast and that you are here, you enrich our country - I have followed you and Mike for a couple of years and love you

Well the unemployment rate is 2.9, so close to full employment - it’s often a matter of getting the right people in the right field and location.
