I watched a vid where someone placed two small nails through two side holes to help stabilize the wax to keep it from bowing Thanks for the detailed instructions it helps us new-bees :)

the only way you can keep the large brood frames ( foundation) straight is using wire or fishing line........tim

Once again, thank you Tim. Leaving for MS tomorrow to visit fiance's family. Gonna be in your backyard! Hopefully I can at least drive by and check your place out. Would love to shake your hand and tell you thank you in person for sharing your experience! Best wishes always, Chris.

Tim is great. I've learned so much from him. Use the closed captioning if your having trouble with his accent. Also adjust the speed if you need to.

@WallsBeeMan 6 лет назад
I can't imagine. Just kidding. I've never heard anyone talk about the closed captioning & speed. Wife & I were at Niagara Falls and I run into 4 couple old like me and they were Bronx NY Italians. Did I have a ball with them. The men hardly talk ed but man let me tell you, those Italians women had no trouble talking just like me. One of them asked me if my accent was for real. We had a lot of fun.

I like these frames. I drill a small cross hole an inch or so from each end and one in the middle then cut a 1" wide starter strip, put it in the top bar, push a small nail through each hole to hold the strip in.

I don’t agree with his opinion that these are only for beginners. Also it’s not necessary to wire these frames- ever. They stay straight because the channels in the end bars prevent bend of foundation. If you like you can use end bar pins. I did and found them unnecessary. But it’s all moot since these frames aren’t manufactured anymore.

I realize we have the langstroth hive because of invention but some of these frames people have come up with are terrible. A lot of people want to be the person for inventing the next great idea.

I nearly build everything I need. Did not even know that N frames existed. I guess fatter wood allows for people that have not stapled more of a distance to staple into the wood. Heavy duty frames I am guessing.

These "N" style frames came with my "Kentucky Special" starter hive kit from Kelley bees. They are all I have used mainly because it is what I was familiar with. They are easy to use, but I have noticed some quality issues on recent orders. Grooves not centered and top bar slot not 100% cut.
@honeybeegranny3221

Me too! Spent hour and hours getting slots to accept foundation. Hane even cut foundation to fit slots. Letting bees attach foundation to sides.
@Don.Challenger
@Don.Challenger 8 лет назад
Tim Sr., so if I'm clear the bowed nail puts tension on the sides (stiles?) and once released tightens up the horizontal wires making the foundation wax a flat plane. Maybe a couple of wood stops and a shim tapped in might put enough force on the thicker sides of these N style frames to accomplish the tightening that is needed? Always good information coming from this channel. Thanks.

Hi Tim What are your thoughts/advice on plastic frames? I am looking at buying my very first bee hive.- "bee ready Hive" but it has plastic Frames. I live in New Zealand Otago in the South Island. The weather can be can be cold and damp and I would imagine that ventilation may be a problem with plastic components. Would I be better to purchase wooden frames.? I have no experience at all at bee keeping so want to do it right from the get go and not create any avoidable issues. By the way, I really enjoy your videos :) I have watched many hours of them. Thank you for giving so much detail. Looking forward to you reply Kristine

That is the way I see it. Plastic frames invites you to have major catastrophes. They have to many nooks and crannies where bugs and other non-wanted pest can hide from the bees and the bees can not get to them to fend them off. Those pests can hide and linger and even multiply in harmful masses that could destroy bees.....brood.....and eventually the whole hive.

What's your thought on those foundationless frames you have to put melted wax in the top and just hang the paper? I tried those this year and the bees didn't do anything on them and the paper just ended up warping making a huge mess in the super. Just wondering if you had tried them yet?
@pmac5621
@pmac5621 8 лет назад
***** Yes. Maybe I melted the wax in wrong and they were not hanging straight, but the bees did not draw any comb at all on them.

I did all my hives with foundation but now, im putting foundation less frames in between two frames of brood and they draw it out in 3 to 5 days bit like checker boarding, I do the same in the honey supers, only thing is im going in the hives abit more.
@turbo12344321
@turbo12344321 8 лет назад
Nope im usind DN4 frames that you can have the wood at an angle up the top of the frame and they just draw it straight out

One other thing I was going to say, back in may I got my first swarm of bee's the queen took about 18 days to lay but didnt lay much about half a side of a frame and then she vanished the hive made 7 new queens and 3 queens and half the bees swarmed, I collected them and put them in hive 3 and I culled out 2 queens and the remaining queen started laying after 8 days, that hive is booming, but hive 1 the queen took about 15 days to start laying so the 18 days plus the 15 days to rear the queens and 15 to mate and then lay eggs plus 21 days to hatch more young bees thats 69 days the hive survived, the new queen is doing great and is catching up now.

Would you still be able to use this frame if you were spinning out the honey if you don't wire them in? Side to side that is.
@WallsBeeMan
@WallsBeeMan 6 лет назад
The answer is probably yes. The main purpose in the horizontal wires is to keep the foundation straight as possible as the bees draw out the comb.

I installed a bee package about a week ago and I borrowed a frame with comb from my friend. It turned out he had a top bar hive but I have a normal 10 frame hive. Because of the frame he gave I had to put 9 frames. The bees still have not built comb on others but they are connecting the frame with comb to the foundation and it is really hard to take off because I had to rip the comb. I dont know what to do may you please give me suggestions on what should I do.

Had this problem in the past. Found if I used a long bread knife (knife with the ity bity saw teeth you use on bread) cut it as close as you can to the 'old' frame then pull the new frame and trim it down to about the thickness it is supposed to be. Bees learn and after about the fifth or sixth time they quit and went to building on the foundation.
@virgilrismiller4490

why do you put wood franes and not plastic how maney beitle blaster to put in hive
@WallsBeeMan
@WallsBeeMan 6 лет назад
Keep in mind beekeepers do things differently like people have different likes & dislikes. Maybe the plastic frames are stronger now but in the past, when I pried a frame away from another frame, the plastic would mash in. I just played it by ear. If I see just a few beetles, maybe just one. See a lot of beetel, I would put 4 to 5 in each brood chamber. Buy the through away, not the re-usable.

Tim I just went into my hive lots of bee's honey not much brood and I seen the Bee's attach and killed The Queen Right before my eyes do you thank I had two queens I did not see another one s.o.s.,,,,please help me out what do I need to do
@WallsBeeMan
@WallsBeeMan 6 лет назад
Danny, you have asked me a question which I do not know the answer. I need to know your location, country state etc. It is possible an insect flew into the hive and that is what they were killing. For a hive to just up and kill the queen is something I have never heard. You did not do anything wrong. Wait 3 days or a few more and go into the hive and look for eggs. Many a time I have thought there was not a queen in the hive and there was.. Let us know what you find.....tim

It’s late in the game but I read this and thought of something odd I heard. Get a magnifying glass and look for more than one egg per cell. If you have multiple eggs in a cell then you may have laying workers. They will kill a new queen when the workers are laying.

@billybobs123
@billybobs123 8 лет назад
what is the purpose of the bees wax foundation?
@FloryJohann
@FloryJohann 7 лет назад
It speeds up the cell building in many or most cases and you should get more honey since it takes about 8 lbs of honey to make 1 lbs of wax. Remember that 1 bee produces/collects 1/12 th of a tee spoon of honey in their whole life. Also this foundation with wire or foundation mounted with wire on the frame will survive a centrifuge better, while a pure drawn comb may not. The best thing is that bees built combs straight down up and down with foundation while the comb building could be anything else without a foundation. It could be the difference if a swarm or a package of bees want to stay when installing.
