A pond may look good, but then that embankment becomes a dam holding back a surprisingly heavy weight of water. Whatever you do, don’t let that water seep through!

Thank you for the lovely comment! In fact the calculations for resolving forces (or anything really) into two directions at right angles to each other (EG up/down and left/right) is simple. You just take a right angle triangle with the long side as being the resultant force or velocity etc, and then the two other (orthogonal!) sides are just sines and cosines of the angle. 3D, you just do it again, but it does get more tricky to visualise. If you google how to resolve forces, you will find some diagrams which show it much better than words... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. You are exactly correct! The trouble was that the heavy equipment is very seldom available to do railway work and there wasn't time to do this. I think that the amount the outside rail can move is very small compared to the clearance between the rail gauge and the width between the flanges. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS.
