One of the most common questions we get from new puppy owners is what to do with puppies that bite. While this topic is covered in our DVD titled Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months, in this video clip we will listen to Michael Ellis explain to students at his school in California how to deal with puppies that bite their owners. This video was filmed in Michael's Puppy Development class, which he holds several times a year.

I took his puppy development class, last week. There were time when he lectured about something and I would think: "Bull Shit". Then he would show us and i would have to pick my jaw off the ground. His knowledge of dog's behaviors is unmatched. I was constantly amazed on what he could make a dog do. He has way more energy than anyone I know. How can he not get tired with all that running and jumping and man can he talk. :-) Great class. The dvd's are a great companion to the classes but they can also give you most of the information all by themselves.

My hands are a bloody scarred up mess, my 12 week old GSD is like a great white shark with legs and i think he's out for blood. He's eyeballing me right now as im typing this, surely wondering when he will get another chance to strike. Joking aside, after a week of positive reinforcement and redirects with food and toys seem to help quite a bit already. Just try to keep calm and follow instructions. Great channel btw, thank you for the videos!

Omg feeling ya, mine is 14 weeks and she cut through both my hand yesterday. She got way too excited when she saw me and bit both of my hands.... her teeth are so sharp... I’ll try the “ignoring” her technique because tracing to settle her down definitely didn’t work 😰

SAMMME! D: Btw, i'm concerned bc my gsd puppy sometimes growls, snarls and literally jumps and bites when somethin doesn't go his way e.g if i dont give him a cloth he wants to play with. does that happen to u too or has my 3 month old puppy just got aggressive traits?

Hows your gsd doing now? I just got a gsd puppy, he's nine weeks old, whenever he's on play mode trying to bite and pull things around, he will freaking attack me, bite my leg and growl like I am his enemy, out of no reason. I usually just grab the skin at the back of his neck or hold his mouth, but if I let go he will just attack me again. Bloody frustrating.

How can I ignore dangerous behavior that draws blood? My puppy is only 9 weeks old and is usually sweet but sometimes gets hyped up and starts attacking people. She follows me and bites my feet and aggressively continues. It’s scary I want my puppy to become a safe well adjusted dog but her behavior makes me afraid I won’t be able to keep her 😨😰

I had the same issue, I'm sad to say I don't know what to tell you. My puppy is over a year now and has gradually grown out of it with lots of "no!" Though he still will bite and nip but he's not as frenzied. But he was drawing blood constantly, ripped my thumb open twice, ripped clothes open and only got crazier if I yelped or tried to ignore him. I would take him and try and walk him and wear him out when he got going.
@Kelly101Girl

I'm having the same issue and I have a pitbull. Hes soooooo bitey its ridiculous and my friend had a 12 week old pomeranian and that dog isnt attacking hands and feet like my dog constantly does. I can't even sit on my living room to watch tv with my nephew when the dog is out because hes constantly trying to eat our human body parts. My dog wasnt from any shelter I purchased him through a lovely coworker at 7 weeks old**

@strikeforcek9149
@strikeforcek9149 5 лет назад
Sure it is. Manage him better. Don't allow opportune times to bite and nip in which you're unprepared. Ie- work on controlled movement to where he spends time in an expen while you can't monitor him/prepare to engage with him. Then, when you are going to engage with him, put on some welding gloves and keep a toy in your pocket to use for redirection. Biting onto the welding glove without you reacting whatsoever, and not allowing any rebound/tugging/pulling action, takes away the benefit to the behavior and the dog will abandon the behavior. Everytime he abandons the behavior, immediately reward with redirection of his toy (tapping into his prey drive) or reward with a couple tidbits of food etc. Dogs only perform behaviors that are beneficial. If you take away the benefit, the behavior will cease. This is also not something you're going to have to do for "weeks" or months. This is something you can do in a matter of a few days of really controlling his freedom of movement so he can't engage in the had behavior at his leisure when you're unprepared to handle it appropriately. Thus, any time he can have the opportunity to engage in the behavior, ensure you're prepared to handle it correctly. If he's getting the option to engage in the behavior while you're unprepared, then at that point you're failing the dog by not managing them correctly to where they can't engage in the behavior unless you're prepared. It takes effort, management, and time to work through this type of issue and still preserve prey drive, confidence, and trust from the dog toward the handler (which is why hitting the dog or shaking them by the scruff is a bad idea, etc).

That's because most pet dog trainers will not want the dog to bite. Dog trainers in the protection field will find that detrimental as it will cap their drive and willingness to bite.

What has worked for me is the command no & squirt bottle of water w/very small amount of lemon juice. “Be carful not to spray in dogs eyes” one or two quick squirts to correct the behavior. The presence / sight of “squirt bottle” my dog no longer bites or jumps on me actually I can’t remember the last time I sprayed my dog. I have several bottles around the house in sight. And when out on walks I carry one w/me for me it’s an easy correction tool. As Leeburg relates key is to eliminate or avoid “bitting” triggers in your dog.
@neoesm
@neoesm 3 года назад
Yeah I don’t know if not responding is a wise reaction. Biting is instinctual for dogs, so if you never react, that won’t affect the likelihood of the puppy biting again next time. You taught me that some behaviors are self-enforcing / self-rewarding, like chasing small animals. If the dog never catches a squirrel they’ll still want to chase one next time. Likewise, if their bite doesn’t trigger a reaction from you they’ll still do it next time. Better to handle it with a reaction than to leave it.

I'd like to not react, but my puppy[Malinois] is drawing blood. He has super sharp baby teeth and isn't afraid to use them. This has been since I brought him home at 2mths. He's like a little White shark, reach to pet him, teeth, reach to put the leash on teeth grabbing hand, wrist or forearm. I'm 60+ and our skin gets thinner as we age exacerbating the problem. I have tried many things to no avail, so now what...
@LeerburgDogTraining
@LeerburgDogTraining 6 лет назад
Can you redirect him with a tug toy?
@suzetridesanandalusian8529
@suzetridesanandalusian8529 6 лет назад
Thank you for your response. I have tried tugs, balls even beef soup bones and he gets distracted for a few minutes but the biting hasn't stopped, it has slowed down in the last few days because I've really cracked down on him without, anything harsh, but I dislike having to do that. Sometimes he's as sweet as you'd want so I'm baffled. Just so you know where I'm at, this is only my 3rd dog. I had an English Springer Spaniel for 13 years and then a Black Lab for 14 years. I bought this puppy from a man who told me he was a GSD, I guess he thought they're all the same. I'm trying very hard not to mess this dog up, I've been watching Larry Krohn for help and that's how I found you. Again, thank you for taking the time to respond.
@LeerburgDogTraining
@LeerburgDogTraining 6 лет назад
When you redirect to a tug, do you just give him the tug or do you interact with him using the tug? It's important to stop moving whatever body part the puppy is biting and make the tug more interesting. Biting you is no fun if you don't move or react - but the tug is over there a foot or 2 away flipping and flopping so it's going to draw the puppy's attention. Keep the tug moving and play tug with him. By redirecting him to the tug like this, you are teaching him a couple of things. He is learning that the tug is an appropriate surface to bite on, and he is also learning that by biting that tug he gets to interact and play with YOU. We have a good article on biting puppies too that might be of interest to you: leerburg.com/bitingpuppies.htm

There are three things that a puppy needs to learn straight away, sit, stay, leave. If you master the leave, then the dog will leave anything you ask without aggression. Start with kibble in your hand, when the dog goes to get the food, close your hand and say ‘leave’ or ‘leave it’ when he leaves reward the behavior with another treat from a different hand or play with a toy for a second or two, then repeat. Once the dog masters this move on to toys, shoes, garbage etc. Unfortunately my puppy hates having his collar held, even to put a lead on, he bits hard and snarls, especially if I grab him to stop him chasing the cats! Draw blood twice on me. Don’t know how to fix this! Any ideas?

This particular video is a snippet of a lecture about dogs biting, aggression, and how reactivity is created a lot of times. If you're not understanding this or understanding how to implement this into your training regimens, you probably should take a few steps back and relearn all the foundation principles of canine cognition and basic psychology.
