Welcome to another catamaran build episode! This week we're taking a deep dive into the deck of Ruby Rose 2 but first we need to work out what the heck we're looking at... The whole deck is upside down and back to front so it takes a bit of detective work to figure it all out. Then we have a chat with Danny, the Technical Project Manager about exactly what it takes to build this structure.
Thanks for watching! Please subscribe and leave a comment ⛵️

Very interesting for us nerds, thank you for doing these videos! I think most boat builders would not want customers to see this level of detail on how their boats are built (and how some corners are cut) but hats off to Seawind for being willing to share all the details. Going to be a hell of a boat!

Fascinating, keep these build videos coming. Best on the web. Detail and complexity, scale huge, its a big boat. Nick you probably know that you can use mathematics to calculate the optimum ratio of the wall thickness and width of the flanges and the web in an I beam, to get maximum strength at minimum material. Also, for a tube, the optimum ratio of wall thickness to diameter. Every bone in the human body has this optimum ratio! Isn't that amazing.

At 6:34 he talks about E glass weight to carbon but it is actually two thirds, so 900 gram E glass UNI is equal to 600 gram Carbon UNI in strength so there is a weight saving of approximately one third with resin weight usually a bit less than the fibre weight depending on hand lay up to vacuum bagging. Great video and I am very impressed with the design and construction methods. These boats are really built as true blue water cruisers, where many other brands are marketed as blue water boats but in reality they are just charter/party boats. Cheers Rustie. PS I am building a Grainger.

I was surprised that SeaWind used e-Glass. The preferred quality fiberglass is s-Glass for structural glass. I get why e-glass is used. It is about 1/2 the cost. But the overall cost of using s-Glass is not that much money. And there are saving is resin as well because less glass is used. Being significantly stronger, you use less s-Glass and thus less resin as well. There are so very positive upsides to using s-Glass. It does not adsorb moisture to the same extent. If the boat is lost in a storm on a beach, the odds of survival are far better. Thus "salvage of the boat" is more feasible.
