One year ago today we suffered a horrendous wildfire that ripped through our entire district. See how we bounced back, always trying our best to turn the problem into the solution. We (Steve and Sarah) are using Permaculture to renovate and restore 3 hectares of land and nine buildings using sustainable methods where ever possible. We love our home in Central Portugal, our journey towards a regenerative, sustainable lifestyle. If you're interested in finding out more about our journey, take a look at our other videos, like and subscribe! Comment and we'll try to answer your questions...
Best wishes
Steve and Sarah.

A beautiful video which certainly puts the words ‘accept, adjust, adapt’ to the test. It’s amazing how nature recovers with the addition of rain. I hope you have time to pat yourselves on the back and celebrate your triumph over adversity. Love the pergola 😉

Hi guys, thanks so much for taking the time to watch our video and get in touch. We're sorry you experienced the same as us, it's truly terrifying, but we've learnt a lot and had so much help along the way, that we feel very blessed. Taking on the restoration of an abandoned village was bound to have it's challenges! Despite what we've been through, we still love living in Portugal and wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Stay in touch, we've only just discovered your videos, but they're definitely encouraging!!!

Well done you! You have my greatest sympathy and admiration. We were in the middle of the firestorm of October 2017, luckily our house survived and so did we as we evacuated.

That wild fire looked horrific. Good to know that everbody is Ok. It came so close to your home, and it would have been a terrible shame to lose the village to something so random. Well done to you both with overcoming the adversity and replanting etc with the help of your volunteers. You can't keep us Sturry Sec boys down, eh Steve. Keep the vids coming when you can. Good Luck! Chris

Wildfires are insane. I always wonder how it starts apart from known ways like cigarette's butts from smokers, barbecue in the forest or even reflection of sun through transparent object like glass bottle... What's also known some black bird spreading flames in the forest. But I think for a reason

Business... all that eucaliptus burnt only the bark is really burnt the trunks inside are intact ...the flames came and go very fast only thing realy destroyed are the brusch, branches, weeds. dry leaves that had accumulated in the soil for years etc... and the people who negotiate with it eucaliptus and pine wood...the "madeireiros" carry the trunks in lorries to the celulose factories and make a good money in that business....and in the case of the eucaliptus stumpst one year after the fire they are full of new eucaliptus shoots if not cut in 10 years time one single stump will turn into a 4/5 new eucaliptus tree....fires does´nt destroy eucaliptus forest on the contrary they renovate it....

So heartbreaking. As an aromatherapist I certainly appreciate and use eucalyptus essential oil. But in Portugal it was planted way too much, it became a serious danger. Are you near Bee and Theo from the Indie Projects? They also lost so much. But are bouncing back similar to you.

Thanks so much for your comment. Eucalyptus oil is something to be appreciated, but there is way too many planted in this country. We have heard from Bee and Theo and glad that they are bouncing back, just like us. Resilience is the key!

The Indie Projects are located near Covilhã, on the East side of the Serra da Estrela mountain (Castelo Branco district) and Chumbaria is located in Leiria county, very close to the border with Ourém county (Santarém district). 🙂

For give me for my stupidity,, but When you have basically stone buildings, don't they survive fires like that? I keep wondering how we can build dwellings that enable us to survive the changes we're seeing.

Anyone who has lived in Portugal long enough knows that forest fires have been a common summer hazard for decades, getting more deadly in last years, with the big fire of Pedrogao Grande in 2017 marking a new milestone: 64 people died, many were families with children trying to flee the villages by car and getting sorrounded on the roads or overcome by smoke. Google "vitimas de Pedrogao Grande" to see what happened. It was a very hot and dry day and several fires started by dry thunder & lightning and encircled a huge area with villages. Some days there were more then 50 fires burning at same time. You'll get used to the smoke and sirens as a backdrop to the summer heat. Have a plan to evacuate and know what to do if encircled, have towels and plenty of water ready, cover yourself with soaked towels and breath through wet towels. If you have a water tank for irrigation, or swimming pool, get inside it and cover your head with wet towel to breath through, stay put several hours till the smoke clears. Ask the local firefighters if there are safe places in your village, usually a new built house, where people can seek refuge when evacuation is impossible. Do not try to to drive away if already encircled and only use roads that lead away from the fire. Never drive through or close to fire. Look at maps and study ways out. My family and neigbours have lands that has burnt several times... we do not bother any longer to replant it because it costs thousands of pounds... and sooner or later it all goes up in smoke again. Sometimes it's just nature, often it's man made: just a couple of days ago some folks started a fire with a barbeque in Serta. I hope they are heavily punished. It's not as if they didn't know the risk, Is it? That's also WHY there is a lot of VERY CHEAP land in Portugal...
