Y'all crack me up (in a good way)😂! Whoa, talk about strategic planning! As a Texan, we would solve the cow problem by making steaks out of those mooing T-bones 😂! Seriously, A) solve power needs 1st for sustainability B) Install an electric (solar/battery) livestock fence just around the area you want to keep the cows out of (saves $ and time). C) Fresh chicken eggs are the best! D) GreenHouse winter wonderland of fresh veggies! The deck steps adds a really nice touch too!

I feel like you need the fence first because you don't want to build the solar shed and have the cows mess with that too. At least enough fence to protect your current living areas.

So true. We did think about just fencing in where we have all our things right now, but it would be nice to have a fence around the full 6 acres on this side so we could also install a gate at the entrance. Lots of people coming by at bad times. :)
@bobmonsour
@bobmonsour 4 года назад
I'd recommend a fence, but to fence 6 acres, that's a lot of fencing. You could opt for a temporary fence for where you're living and planting. It would buy you time and reduce your cow headache instantly. There are a lot of less expensive ways to go than a permanent fence. Here's just one site with ideas (not that you haven't already done a ton of research). homedecraft.website/2019/04/24/20-inexpensive-temporary-fencing-ideas-for-your-home/ The advantage to a temporary fence is that you could then take on some of the lower priority things that would add to your quality of life, like the greenhouse/chicken coop. Best of luck to whatever you choose.

Put up a portable electric fence. Cost will be nominal compared to a permanent structure. It will keep the cows out once they test it the first time. Research rotational grazing for cattle & think of yours as reverse grazing. Good luck

Compost bin first. Easy project and you'll benefit from having a way to build the soil. Smaller, must-have, fence section next (but important that the smaller fence layout fits into the larger fence plan). Chicken coop/greenhouse next. Then solar shed/office, but perhaps incorporate the bathroom into that building. As for the cows, collect their manure to add to your composting bin and garden soil. Might as well benefit from their free-ranging on your range. Just my 2 cents...OK, my buck-fifty. Enjoying the channel.

@@TinyShinyHome :-) The most important task, is maintain that joie de vivre. That fact that you are happy and having fun in this process (in spite of the heat), is a significant part of a sustainable lifestyle. It also makes for videos that are compelling and enjoyable to watch (speaking as a RU-vidr here). One further thought on soil-building: microbe rich soil is far more important to life than electricity. Solar can come, but soil needs to be an immediate and ongoing component (in my opinion). I'd enlist the kids to scour your land for cow patties and use those as a building block for the soil. They'll have good microbial communities for enhance the soil. Pay for poop. 25 cents a patty ought to be a good incentive. Or make it a game. lol.

We plan to keep the other 5 acres in fenced so we can continue to benefit from the cows ‘deposits’. The soil here is extremely poor for growing food, but hopefully over time we can make it better. That’s the plan:) thanks for the advise!

Ur so funny! I think I’d do the fence. Determine a long range goal for it! As in draw it out. Then determine what part of it can you do to keep the cows out. A fence around ur garden might keep out more than cows, so that’s what I’d aim for first. Plus, working in hear might be easier than trying to dig post holes in the frozen ground.

Hi, my wife and I love seeing your progress and think you and your family are great! I agree with the Texan, 12v solar powered live stock fence around your living work zone only, this is very easy to install and move and expand as needed. Also the power shed/office seems will allow for better resources for the next projects. Will be fun to see what you all decide :-) Stay strong, your dream is awesome for your family. I did projects around house on Father’s Day too!

Fencing is priority! Greenhouse and chickens will suffer from cattle curiosity. Build solar shed while you have good weather. Once your solar shed is built it will give you a better idea as to where the solar equipment install will benefit you for visualization and repairs. Will it also house a larger hot water heater? I would separate chickens from greenhouse. Chickens will eat your seeds. Anyway good luck. I do enjoy your videos.

I like Adam G's list starting with the solar power, then a solar electric fence. But if you're thinking about a fence to keep unwanted visitors out, then the fence might be best first. And I'm sure you'd all love an extra bathroom when time and budget permit. Maybe the chicken coop/greenhouse in the spring?

Fence the acre or so around everything first. Metal T posts and barbed wire are reusable. Plan it right and you may only need to reuse 2 sides of the fence when you expand. Rent or borrow a gas or diesel air compressor (or a skid loader with the post driver attachment) to drive the posts, you'll be thankful you did. (try and drive a dozen posts by hand in the AZ heat...). Solar electric fences work great! Best Wishes!

I would say fence first. You need to keep the cows out so they don't damage everything you already have and the things you will be adding. Would something like predator fencing that is temporary and moveable work? If it would be cheaper than actual fencing and keep cows out it would be a nice alternative and give you time to figure out exactly how much of your property you want to permanently fence in. Plus you can do wait for cooler weather to do it.

Haven't moved onto My 20 yet, but we did Camp out there 3 Days and second Day we had the same, Cows early in the AM, so that would be one Priority for Me, can't afford Fencing on all 20 Acres, so I came up with Fencing just 5 Acres where I plan on building Our House, next I plan on building a Septic that I can hook up the RV directly, already have My Solar Set-up, not on the Property yet, but soon after I move the RV.. It's tough sometimes making the decisions in order, sometimes You just have to go with the Flow.. 😉
@GloriousAguacate
@GloriousAguacate 4 года назад
I think it depends what type of fence you want and it should be your priority since you don't wan't your work bothered by wildlife and also hopefully the wildlife doesn't get into something dangerous. I think the fence should be in the area where you plan on building so you should try to plan it out even as a bubble diagram to get an idea of locations. The solar would be second I think so you have especially if you have your office in it and other addons just cause that allows more space in your Airstream both because it's one less person in it when you work and more space for food (more food is always good). The rest of the stuff I think shouldn't be a priority mostly cause they don't seem to me like a priority (mostly the coop). But that's just what I think and I don't know all the little details so yea :)

I would do the one that is the most valuable. Maybe you can do a smaller fence around your house for now and do the solar shed. I like the green house idea too. Right now it is so hot so green house is not as useful now and could be built when it gets cooler.

You have to build the fence at least around the home for your protection against not just cows but predators. You will not keep chickens with wild dogs and coyotes. You will need electric fences and set them up with your power.

@slbd7900
@slbd7900 4 года назад
If you do the greenhouse/coop first there's a good chance the cattle would wreak havoc with it. (Assuming you can get to solar in next couple of months). Maybe using your road and 1-2 acre perimeter you could built a fenced enclosure (described below by Adam) with completion of the 6 acres at a later time if you still feel you need that much area fenced. Then you can live your life while doing the solar job, coop, etc.
@TinyShinyHome
@TinyShinyHome 4 года назад
I do like this idea. Gates are an issue with temporary fencing and where our driveway and other entrance are located. I do like the idea of a temporary fence, but it wouldn’t be too much more work to just fence in the entire 6 acres.

There's no law that says you have to work on one at a time~~I would start on the solar shed thingy bc that's a big one and you can't get that done overnight. There will be lulls during which time you can get the electric fence up (solar powered independent of the rest of the systems) and get a doggie or two, duh! They'll run those cattle off.
